The cimeter was a bit of a pain in the arse an took about twice as long as it should have, like running out of sandpaper, buffing compounds and other stuff over the christmas period. Other than that it turns cows into steak pretty well

i want to get some tools for woodworking, what chisels arent shit and are available in Australia? on top of that how can you tell in general whether a tool is good or not? looking to get other stuff like a table saw, one of yhose pull down saws, etc

>how can you tell in general whether a tool is good or not?

If it looks and feels well made, its likely to be good.
>>
They're all the same really. The Harbor Freight $10/set will work just as nicely as Lie Nielsen shit provided you flatten the backs and spend a bit of time honing them. Don't be a hand tool fetishist.
>>
>>1124291
They definitely wont work the same.
But they will both do the job.

Forcing yourself to suffer using shit tools won't make you a big boss man.

Good evening, /diy/.

I'm wanting to build my children an air traffic control treehouse, complete with a RADAR screen (C-scope or G-Scope--like you'd see in a RAPCON) but I can't find anywhere online that sells the bastards, not even Fry's.

Anyone know where I can get one of these puppies? All I need is the screen and I can wire it up to make fake blips so my kids think there's actually aircraft around.

Thanks.

I was in the Air Force for 9 years as base ops. Most of my friends were ATC. It's a simply scope/screen which is wired up to the ASR or DASR or whatever, but all I want is the damn screen.

The CMOS battery holder came off after I bumped into my laptop with a chair. The ground side of the holder separated off the mother board and it seems to have ripped off the path. I have already try to "carefully" tried to soldered it back on but with no luck of. Does it anyone know where I can find the schematics for it? It's a 17" HP G71. I been debating with my computer savvy friends whether or not to just solder a little "bridge" from the problem point to nearest ground on the mother board
21 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>1124074
if that is the ground i'd do as you said, but before that i'd epoxy the plastic part to the motherboard
>>
>>1124074
You could just get a cmos battery with them wires and solder said wires. Dont get solder on the motherboard or: ded
>>
>>1124284
The problem is that the contact pad came off the botherboard and it isnt visible where the path was for me to solder it back together.

A while ago I made this thread about leds.
>>1121259

I've decided to do some testing. And I have decided to trial a smaller scale version first.
I've found better, but more expensive leds to play with.
MO: CXB3590-0000-000N0BDB50E
A cree led, 35mm round, 3600ma max, 39v forward voltage, producing 14340LM minimum.
I've come to my senses on power delivery and will be trialing individual drivers for each LED, and 48v supply voltage.
Cooling will still be a water based system I'm pretty sure, but now include a place to mount the drivers, probably on the back side.

I'm thinking of going towards a 8 led version first, for slightly over 100,000LM of output for 1200w-ish.

I still need to figure out how to get the 48v supply from the vehicle, how to control the brightness and watts, optics, and reducing cost.

I'll try to update as stuff arrives in the mail.
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1124067
Why are you still going with 40v LEDs? Cant you find 12v ones with roughly the same output you desire?
>>
>>1124158
I can't find anything 100w+ thats 12v.
>>
Parts came and I ordered the wrong fucking thing. Ordered a constant current voltage thing from Amazon that said 8.5-48v in 0-50v out, figuring 48 in, 32 out. It's a step up only.

I wonder how it would like 600v DC...

I have two older chromecast models (pic related). I want to use one as a"chromecast audio" for a pair of speakers that hangs on the balcony (they use 3.5mm).
I've seen a guy that used a vga adapter to isolate the sound but it wasn't concrete, nor did he show any results.
I have a lot of soldering experience, time, money and tools.
I thought this would be a fun thing to do. (since one CC isn't in use).

>Inb4 No I'm not gonna buy a "chromecast audio", nor a network audio streamer.

I'm not sure on audio quality either, sense I don't have any experience with audio over network. Syncing is not a big issue, but I want the quality to be at least decent.
>>
>>1123416
Get hdmi to vga adaptor. Use one or both audio ports
>>
>>1123496
You need three 68 ohm resistors to make it work. You need to Google for a vga dummy plug to fool the hdmi into thinking it is connected.

For whatever stupid reason I've decided I want to make something that creates a decent arc flash.

The traditional route is not an option mostly because my house isn't a power relay station.

Instead, I'm thinking of creating a (relatively) low resistance initial arc and then discharging lower voltage capacitors through it.
Any idea how I'd do the second part?

just get yourself a neon sign transformer and some coat hangers. spark gap is about 1 inch per 10,000 volts.

the only downside is ozone generation. you know its time to shut it off when you get a sore throat, and you will eventually get a sore throat.

My mom died and left me 8000 dollars. She wanted me to buy land; I want land more than anything. How do I find the en best deals, /diy/? I live in MI, supposedly an inexpensive state. Can I expect to get an acre or 2 (or even for or five) for 8000 or less? Or am I fooling myself?

Yes I am willing to live in the back, back woods (I almost already do) in fact id prefer it. I just have no clue howtheland market even works.

I live in northish Central MI and as a rule of thumb, the land gets cheaper the further north and further from the big lakes you go. There's kind-of a half shape around the center of the state and the outside that's the cheapest.
Dunno if that helps but there you go.

Well that's good news, cause i'm in the inland UP and intend to stay here. Land should be cheap, but I rellay dont even know where to look, besides calling the numbers on the few 'for sale' signs I see driving around in the country. Theres got to be a good wayy to get a good deal.

Lets see if the rest of my pictures are upside down.
>>
>>1121015
Ooh also good to note: before you buy, find out what you can do on the land.
A buddy of my dad's bought like 12 acres and can't do basically anything with it except camp and hunt because it has an important creek through it and it's surrounded by wetlands.

So after dealing with 2 months of almost tripled electricity bills, I've determined my upstairs neighbor is stealing electricity from me.

He lives directly above me, and I finally noticed an extension cord draped out of his window, wrapped around the corner of the building, and plugged into an outlet in the front of the building, directly underneath outer windowsill of my bedroom.

I initially assumed that the outlet was just part of the circuit for the building, like with laundry and such. But last night, I went through each of my apartment breaker switches, and finally found one that controls that outlet. The thing is, it also apparently controls my bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen light. I went ahead and switched the breaker, so whatever he had on there is done for now. It also means that I'm without most of my lights.

Is there anyway I can disable that outlet, or invisibly fuck up his cord, while leaving my lights alone? I would deal with him in person, but he seems like a very dangerous drug dealer/user or pretend he doesn't speak English, and I'd prefer to deal with this without being face to face. Also, my landlord is a scumbag who wouldn't give a shit, and I wouldn't be surprised if he suggested this to my neighbor.

U got pics of outlet
>>
>>1118238

Uhhhh.... not at the moment. Just curious, would a picture help at all?

I'm thinking of just wire nutting the wires inside, and replacing the outlet and extension cord to where he put them.
>>
>>1118237
This socket is on an _outside_ wall?
>w-why?
w/e.. anyway, if its only lights you had on that circuit, get an extension cord and plug some floorlamps into another circuit. After 2/3 days, he'll have got the message, and either find a new socket, break in and flip the breaker, or come and kill you. Other option is tracing the wires, and disconnecting that socket permanently, but, it dont sound like you know what you are doing, that'll probably kill you as well.

Basically, move - but waiting it out a few days is probably 2nd easiest.
