So I heard that Gunpei Yokoi got the inspiration for the Game and Watch by seeing someone playing with a calculator in the train to pass the time, did people really used calculators as gaming devices back in the day. I mean, I know they weren't cheap so they had to make the best use of them, but how many uses did they got other than making it say BOOBS? I heard they could be programed, if so, what kind of games they could make with them?

maybe math games? they have calculators now that have games on them, but then again they are in japan. they probably came up with numbers to multiply or whatnot, and then check the answer on their calculator
>>
I do recall playing some math games/activities with a calculator as a kid. I don't remember what exactly though.
There were some calculators that had games built in using the (numeric) display, but my memory places them in the early/mid 80s. Same era as the Game & Watch.
>>

Yes, there were programmable calculators back then that even took magnetic cards sorta like a game cartridge. They looked like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TI-59_/_TI-58 So it probably wasn't what you think with the calculator in the pic, but close.

Satoru Iwata also got his start in programming by making games on his calculator. I think they were baseball games. They were very basic games, you wouldn't want on. Think of it as like a text adventure game but with numbers instead of text. So yeah, I imagine it was boring ass shit but that's what they had back then.

Who likes this game? The best Bitmap Bros game IMO. Having been a big fan of the Xenon games as a kid, somehow this always passed me by (though I knew of its existence and thought it looked good). I've only been playing it a short while but I'm having loads of fun.

Nice difficulty curve, great action, sweet graphics and a cool soundtrack. It's on plenty of formats too - I prefer the Megadrive version (despite usually being more of a SNES fan).

It's promising, up until near the end, when it just turns to shit. Can be fun with friends, but it actually makes it harder since you have to split loot.
>>
The best Bitmap Brothers game is Gods.

I guess this was inspired by Alien Breed?

Is there a company that actually specializes is saving and refurbishing old broken game consoles instead of lying about saving them and scrapping them for their IC chips, gold plated parts and silver contacts?

>and scrapping them for their IC chips, gold plated parts and silver contacts?
Socialist countries used very much gold, so after dissolution of the Soviet block old computers were entirely scrapped.
Bad fate.
>>
Most retro stores worth their salt offer a repair service, if that's what you mean.
>>
>>3347763
I do. Not on a massive scale but I've salvaged and repaired a few hundred consoles so far.

Just finished Valkyrie Profile, what are /vr/ opinions on it?

I thought it was great, the Einherjar recruitment parts were great, even if that's the only part of their character development. The dungeons are all right but the battle system can get pretty boring after some time. The A ending is pretty meh though.

Also I love this motherfucker's voice.

Great game.

I just wish the cutscenes were skippable and the voice acting wasn't full of AIDS.

Just get an undub.

I really like the combat system but I got bored by the time I reached the fourth chapter. I didn't like the format of the game of having the time limit, going to one or two towns per chapter to recruit Einherjar, going to one or two dungeons per chapter to train party, etc. It's too rigid and repetitive.

I always loved the graphics on this. The mix of 3D environments and nicely drawn sprites. Are there any other games like this, except the obvious first person shootans?

Something with bright colorful graphics like in Pepsiman.

I wonder what the reaction would be if you went back to 1991 just after SF2 was released and told everyone that eventually all three of these would be mainline Street Fighter characters. They'd probably call you crazy.

can i pls get some recommendations for genesis games? i just got one at a garage sale for $5 and i'm not too familiar with the quality of the library.

- Dragon's Fury / Devil Crash MD
- Streets of Rage (Any of them)
- Fightin' games (If you're into that)

You should probably get an EverDrive MD for ~$35-50 and just have the entire library.
>>
Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania New Generation, Battletoads, Streets of Rage, Rocket Knight Adventures, Shinobi, Two Crude Dudes
>>
$40 Chinese Everdrive to play the entire Genesis & Master System libraries.

What's a good Ogre battle to start with?

Ogre Battle
>>
Well there's really only two, they're both good but I found Ogre Battle 64 to have better pacing and more interesting units. The original is a solid place to start, though. I've played the snes version, its supposedly faster than the psx port. PSX version does have some nice effects though.

If you want to go deeper into the world/story you can look at the Tactics Ogre games. Let Us Cling Together is the precursor to FF:Tactics and is an amazing strategy game. I haven't played the GBA game but I've heard its good. Just know that these games play more like FF:T and don't play like the main Ogre Battle games at all.

Ogre Battle 64, by a mile~

Which one is Kun Laos?
>>
>>3345859
No, they're an artifact of the Genesis' composite encoder which puts some jailbars in blue spots. I think it can be solved...for RGB at least.
>>
Second from left in top row. I get black bars on solid colors like on the orange opening of recap attack. Anyone know what might cause it?

Sure, you can point fingers at the 32X, but Saturn, Sega's actual representation for fifth gen, failed spectacularly outside of Japan and basically allowed Sony to take over the gaming industry. Had the Saturn not have flopped, the Dreamcast probably could have lived a longer life and Sega would still be in the console business without Microsoft eventually having to take their place. 32X failing didn't nearly have as huge of a consequence as Saturn's failure, and Sega of Japan killing it off early permanently sullied their image to most third-party developers.

How come Sega fucked up so hard after the Genesis?
32 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>3345617
If you want to take it simple, Sega felt they are too powerful after Genesis.
But they weren't to support fails.
>>
Bad decisions:

1) Building a 2D powerhouse for a 3D era
2) Bad marketing (no flagships at launch, etc)
3) Rushed release (overpriced, no flagships)
4) Withholding jap games from western market
5) Not wooing 3rd party devs

Having said all of that, I don't think ANY established videogame company could have withstood Sony's assault on the market, Sony were ON FIRE, they did absolutely everything right, the hardware, the software deals, the marketing... The only way Sega could have competed is by doing everything Sony did, six months before Sony did it.
>>
Even if the Dreamcast was not killed Microsoft would still have entered the console market.

They felt threatened by Sony taking all the game developers away from windows PC.

I don't remember much about it. I think I actually played the demo for it more than the final game.

Can we get a retro merch thread /vr/?

I recently started organizing stuff i've had for years and buying some 6th/7th gen merch, but I've been wondering what all exists in /vr/ related things. Old toys sold during the NES era and the like, obscure stuff from lesser known RPG premotionals, that kind of stuff.

Genuinely curious to see what all exists. oh, and feel free to post your own collections and comments! The more the merrier!

Those are some rad pajama pants.

Personally I'm fond of old sticker collections, Merlin had some cool album collections like Super Mario and Street Fighter II.

How does this guy have the largest video game memorabilia collection without any Pokemon shit in sight?
>>
The closest thing I even have to retro merch is a little figurine of Zelda 1 version of Link, and the 8-bit Mario Amiibo.

And I guess a Sonic plush that I thought was an ordinary classic Sonic plush, but as it turns out, it was a Sonic Underground plush that had it's guitar necklace removed before it was given to me.

I wish I still had some of the retro stuff I had as a kid. I had some Mario and Sonic Kid's Meal toys, a Super Mario Bros Lunch Box and Thermos, some T-shirts with a particularly vicious looking off-model Bowser popping out of a TV, some Mario coloring books, and comics.

Actually now that I think about it, I have an old Super Mario World graphic novel from before the N64 even launched, It's in really shitty condition because I was a dumb kid when I got it and I took it to school in my back pack alot.

I wish Nintendo would issue a reprint like they did for the Zelda comic, so I could get a new copy. It goes for unacceptable prices online as it is now.
