No, they're an artifact of the Genesis' composite encoder which puts some jailbars in blue spots. I think it can be solved...for RGB at least.

Second from left in top row. I get black bars on solid colors like on the orange opening of recap attack. Anyone know what might cause it?

It's subcarrier interference on the rgb lines. Commonly known as jailbars so google this for more info.

Only surefire way to fix it that I'm aware of is to run shielded rgb lines from the vdp to the encoder.

No more composite or s-video, only rgb. Hence not much good for op.

There is also the elephant in the room to consider: We have no idea which of the myriad hardware revisions op is working with. Personally I use MD2 VA4s which have almost all major functions crammed into the 315-5960.

OP, what's your setup?

Jailbars on S-video is a sign your Chroma signal is too strong. If you have a potentiometer installed on the Chroma line, just turn it down a little. Otherwise, try installing a pot between the Chroma line coming off the CXA1145 and your S-video connector, and adjust as needed.

I'm using a non HD graphics genesis model 1. My model 2 genesis also has slight jail bars over composite. Is there just no way out besides rgb?

Look at the CXA1145. It takes it's own chroma and luma, and makes a composite signal out of it. Jailbars are a clear sign your chroma signal is too strong, and you need to turn it down. You will get jailbars on either s-video or composite if your chroma is too strong.

This is jailbars, NOT rainbow banding mind you.
