I have only played Nuklear Strike, but never Soviet. However, Nuklear Strike was so unexpectedly great and enjoyable, with a pretty cool story and very good presentation that I can't imagine any other Strike game being better.

Claymates!

I remember really liking this game! Like, a lot, when I was little. One of those games where it was so weird, but it was bright, and a fun platformer. Really unique!

Then I played it again and wondered how my kid self had the patience to get to almost the last world, and my critical side began to set in on the um, interesting design. Oh also getting a new form only to get hit like right after and lose it.

I rented Claymates around 5 times from the video store as a kid. Pretty hard difficulty. But I really did enjoy the art and music. jumping is a little off however. I also played ClayFighter as a kid.

The game has a lot of charm indeed, and I loved using the different animals, especially the rat (BLAZE PROCESSING, seriously that shit was fast), but the problem was the level design. You couldn't really enjoy the speed because the levels have this annoying maze design that warp you from one point to another all the time.

I never really completed the game as a kid, the ocean levels were too much for my kid self. A shame because the japan levels are actually more fun.

And yeah, that map screen music is so soothing, brings back a lot of warm memories.

You know what my actual favorite part of the game was? the bonus stage where you need to bound on a check board

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phYXURHF-9M

That was actually fun, but too short, would have loved a game mode consisting of only those bonus levels.

I just learned of this series and it seems really uniquely engrossing. Trouble is I'm having a hard time emulating the first game in its entirety, can't emulate the second at all, and the third is French-exclusive. Apparently there is/was a remake/sequel happening a few years back but there hasn't been any progress for nearly a year...

Has anyone here played them?

The intro scares the shit out of me.
>>
>>3352402
I played all 3 of them. Long story short (it's the middle of the night for me so I'mma sleep right after that):

-there's a faulty rom of the first (Captain Blood) that blocks your progress after a while. If you can get a working one it's IMHO a marvelous game. Though at its core it's a standard adventure game the immersion offered by the interface and icon language and the relative nonlinearity (there's four possible beginnings, two opposing ways to reach the final stretch of the game, and two possible endings from there IIRC) and freedom of action make it a really great game. And it's out there, really weird. Weird graphics, weird goals, weird plot. No one knows what to know without the manual though (find and juice your clones to save yourself). There's a race of alien pacmen, and a race that always looks like the ideal female mate of the observer.

Emulate the atari ST version because that's the one with the alien speech synthesis.

-Second (Commander Blood) and third (Big Bug Bang) can be emulated with dosbox, never had a problem with that so I dunno what yours is. Where the first was weird, second is completely bonkers. CGI/Puppets/live action mix, Pigs in Space on acid. Your new ship's got a bigger fridge, TV and a 28.8k modem. You can get an ancient space curse that'll make it so there's nothing interesting on TV. It's not exactly a sequel and not exactly a remake, you'll have to poke around to find out what the relation to the first game is. Your goal is to escort the richest guy in the universe through blackholes to the beginning of time so he can have a look at the big bang before he dies. He's already so old he's only got a few hours to live and is stored in the fridge. The game's got a bunch of really good meta jokes.
>>
>>3352592
continued:

The alien language interface is gone though, it's just standard dialogue trees and the game's completely linear, also there are two scripting errors that can get you stuck. Also the game's ending is a cop out, they couldn't finish the game in time and put a half parody half cliffhanger ending. Definitely a less good game than the first, but not a bad idea if you want a laugh.

-third game's where it gets really hairy. Basically it's entirely made using assets, used or not, from the second game to finish the plot they left hanging and the end of Commander Blood. The universe has gone belly up and your task is to accelerate evolution and rebuild the whole thing until it produces the ultimate lifeform (ie Bob Morlock, your client from the second game). It's got some vague spore-ish life sim tacked on but that's pretty crappy.

Everything's crappy, in fact, and the devs knew it. The whole game's written as a testament of disdain and hate, hate for the player who was stupid enough to buy it and for the producers who were shitty enough to order the game made on a shoestring budget as a cash-in. The whole express-galaxy-building plot is a metaphor for crunch time. In that respect it's quite interesting. Also it features the real ending, the one we didn't get in Commander Blood. Still, not worth playing.

-the remake/sequel is vaporware, or a scam, depending on your terminology. It's a fanproject by an "idea guy" and has never been anything more than a bunch of photoshop files, and it's actually been in "production" since 2010 at least, with almost no progress. It got press attention because the devs of the Blood series let him use the game, but make no mistake, nothing is ever gonna come out of it.

---

So yeah, the first's the one that had the real international success and the one you really wanna play, second is nowhere near the same genius but funky stupid linear fun and the third's a turd that was shat out with intense fascinating hate.

Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you.re playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

IRC channel: #gauntlet on irc.rizon.net (Mibbit link on site)

NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:

-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump limit is exceeded

Never played this trilogy back in the day. I'm emulating my way through them.

First game was bretty gud. Now about 1/4 of the way through the 2nd game, and the increase in quality is tangible. I'm becoming increasingly aware that I didn't 100% the first game, just played through casually. Should I go back and aim to 100% all 3 games or is that overkill?

Tried doing that with Mario Galaxy a while back. Green stars are a fucking scam. There's a big difference between 'full mastery of a game' and 'tedious, mindless, rewardless collecting'. Which is DKC?
46 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
It's fun to 100% (well the actual listed percentage is higher) all 3 games but you don't really miss out on any fun bonuses in the first game as you do in 2 and 3.

The bonus stages in DKC1 are also repetitive where as every one is unique in the sequels.
>>
>>3352195
I'd say try doing 102% in DKC2 first, it's fun and probably the most rewarding of them as you unlock new, often more challenging levels plus the secret ending. It's similar in DKC3, except that in 3 you have to keep playing that boring Simon-Says clone to collect the birds (though you also have the exploration part where you need to find secret caves on the maps, some people seem to like it). In DKC1 you don't really have any rewards (afaik).
>>
2 > 3 > 1

Don't listen to 1fags, they're just gay for DK. DKC1 was more like a tech demo than an actual game.

In what way are shmups competitive? Because they have scores? Then any other game with score is also competitive.

I nominate stuff from the golden age of arcades like Pac-man or DK to be the most competitive.

I just spent my weekend completing a leisurely FFIX run. I now want some other slow paced comfy games I can kick back on the sofa and take my time with.

Playing other Final Fantasy/JRPG games would probably be a bit overkill, as after spending 50 hours with FFIX, I'm pretty tired of random battles and dungeon grind. However that RPG sort of experience where I don't need to worry about reflexes, I can sit here with a couple youtube videos on in the background, eat my pop tarts with a spare hand while casually reading about stats and inventory items... That's the sort of thing I want to play. Something that I can invest a bit of time into and hold my attention, without being all about action.

Any ideas Anons? Preferably SNES or PS1 games as those are the easiest for me to get a hold of. Discuss the games you play when you just want to relax.

I liked the voice acting, it reminds me of the voiceovers in legends of the hidden temple that had people speaking during olmec's explanations of the storyline of the episode and the artifact in question. Namely and especially Dracula's voice acting.

So I think we all generally agree current prices for retro games are shitty and over-inflated for various reasons.

So, someone was apparently able to drive the price of a cheap game pretty significantly by simply buying around 20 copies of the game on eBay and letting the site's suggested pricing take care of the rest. The video below has details.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKHk5U8tmfw

Suppose a large group of people do similarly with other cheap games. Suddenly the market is full of overvalued games that can't match their demand. Speculation would peak and resellers and investors would bail on the market and prices would drop.

Is this a plausible scenario?
18 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
No. Resellers will buy up every single reasonably priced copy of a demanded game - be it 20 or 200 of them. You cannot stop it.
>>

>Suppose a large group of people do similarly with other cheap games. Suddenly the market is full of overvalued games that can't match their demand. Speculation would peak and resellers and investors would bail on the market and prices would drop.
>Is this a plausible scenario?
Yes, but you give people too much credit. As long as there is someone willing to pay for a cart of some old game the market will be sustained.

There's always going to be someone who doesn't know any better and that's who resellers bank their success on. Stop paying outrageous prices and jews will go away.

Neither of your conclusions make sense and you're giving the resellers too much credit. I guess you're content with the way things are, or resellers.
