26 years later, what are your thoughts on Super Mario World? How would you rate the features it introduced, such as spin jump, Yoshi, cape, etc? How do you think it holds up compared to other SMB games, if you count it as SMB4?

It was the easiest (due to saving) SMB but also the most fun

I had a blast with the game, but it's criminally easy generally speaking. Cape breaks everything.

Pretty much this. Awesome game but the save feature and cape make it too easy.

i've been digging through some best games of all time lists for different consoles, more recently one for the ps1. i always seem to stumble across some mgs game in the top 10 and i wonder, what makes these games so great? i've never played any of them since i dont really like stealth games and the whole military base setting just doesn't appeal to me. Is it just that good that someone like me could still have fun with it?

"Best Gaems of Ol' Tiem" lists should be taken with a grain of salt. Their logic is usually "best = best-sellers".

That said, MGS is not an overhyped title. It's a really captivating stealth action game with a refined and pretty advanced gameplay. But even more than that, it has a very impressive and complex story which is communicated through movie-like cutscenes. That set a precedent in video games, and while many tried to emulate Kojima (see: Western cancer games from 2005 onward), few really approched MGS in quality and cohesiveness of that merger of a movie and a game.
>>
Metal Gear Solid tends to be pretty immersive as a matter of game design and requiring the player to do things outside of the program that is running on the console. It also usually has more than one way to achieve some goal or other, and pays a fair amount of attention to small details, like the ability to catch a cold and such.

this basically

Also the graphics and textures were Superb for the time, it reminds me of the quality of Silent Hill 1 - even if the resolution is lower it has the proper level of grime, grit, and industry.

Not some cheesy thing that got churned out by a texture generator or pixel art.
> MGS... a good game... really?

I did like some of the puzzles, and the boss battles were innovative.

But big boss says these clone troopers have an IQ of 180 but at the same time they act so stupid and are practically walking around looking through a magnifying glass at the ground.

Also killing dudes doesnt get rid of them strangely. And if the clone troops were actually smart they would keep flooding an area and rienforce it after you raised an alert

> which should be dudes actually in other rooms so that way you can get them to rush somewhere, and lower their presence at another place you need to get through.

Everything about Revolver Ocelot is wrong (just in general). If he had a custom Hellboy kinda revolver and was shooting through scenery anything short of a steel I-beam id find that more acceptable. Which would make his name more fitting as he'd have a much more custom weapon that can do things a normal one cant.

And if you dont get in the truck right at the very beginning (which isnt entirely necessary so its not obvious) to get the Thermal Goggles you can write your ass off against the boss 3 levels down the line.
> my first two playthroughs ended up that way until I looked at a walkthrough... that Truck at the start of the game... I never even got into it before that.

All in all alot of problems and suggestive of linear gameplay, you've got to play it a certain way.

I think a lot of 2000 games really got fucked over like The Sims, Diablo II and Deus Ex. I really believe they deserve to be retro. However when I think about it a lot, Diablo II directly influenced the current loot pinata clicker simulator ARPGs that you see nowadays. This makes me appreciate Diablo in the sense that there is a clear divide between 1 and 2, where 1 really earns itself as being retro and not quite with 2.

Lakka and Retropie are both buggy pieces of shit, Retropie is so bad im not convinced you can use it for more then a few days before it decides to corrupt itself, Lakka is better but not by much. Spotty compatibility with both, even with games that work fine on retroarch vanilla.

Just get a Android box or a Mini PC instead, pi ain't worth the trouble

Have you bought any cheap Chinese /vr/ related stuff? What was your experience like?

Recently I bought a $6 Shantae repro off Aliexpress. I expected the quality to be garbage but it's a surprisingly solid thing with a working save feature. I was honestly surprised.

I also ordered a replacement GBC screen for $2, since my old one is scratched to hell and back. I'm still waiting for that to arrive, if this thread's still up when it comes I'll update you on that.

CRT are all lagless unless you're using a very late (as in recent) HD model with image processing.

Assuming you've got a standard 480p TV you're fine as 240i (and the equivalent PAL) use scan lines to create a 480p image.

Collectors: What is your emergency plan in the case of a fire (or some natural disaster)?

I keep most of my disc games in booklets, which I could toss out of a window or something if there's a fire, but carts are in rubbermaid bins which are fucked. Thinking about storing them in suitcases I can grab and go.

Everything else in my house can burn.

I have bigger problems than my game collection burning up if my house goes on fire. I have stuff that's way higher priority to get out than my video games

Everything I have is documented so I present that to the insurance company and they give me the replacement value, then I spend it on ebay and get all my stuff back, and probably cull some stuff I don't want.
>>
>>3752596
Do insurance companies respect the "collector's market value" of a game? I would have thought they'd laugh at the idea of your 25 year old disc being worth $300 and tell you to kick rocks.
>>
Buy three copies of everything. One offsite, one to use, and one solely as backup.
Or if you're cheap, keep the collection offsite and emulate at home.

I have made a thread similar to this in the past, so I apologize for redundancy. I finally have the money to pursue this so I am revisiting this topic. But maybe we can make this thread more open for various topics.

So I am searching for an arcade stick which will work especially well for the Tetris the Grandmaster series. From what I have read, in order to play TGM games properly with a fighting stick, the stick must be four-way instead of the typical eight-way.

I have done some researching and it seems that Madcatz is renowned for their fighting sticks (which I find ironic because their normal controllers are usually garbage). I stumbled across this particular stick, which may work for TGM.

This stick features a D-Pad mode where you can set the stick to emulate the D-Pad. If I simply switched the mode to this, would this eliminate my need for having a "true" four way stick? Or are there better sticks out there suited for TGM?

The stick in question: https://www.amazon.com/Street-Fighter-Arcade-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3/dp/B018HXA6H8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485033200&sr=8-1&keywords=fightstick+alpha

Also, arcade general

I recommend this stick:

https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-F300-Arcade-Fight-Joystick/dp/B019MFPLC0/ref=sr_1_6?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1485034056&sr=1-6&keywords=mayflash

I got one a while back. The stock parts are ok but what makes this affordable stick great is that it is compatible with Sanwa parts. The buttons are very easy to swap out but you may need to solder if you want to replace the switches on the stick (which is really not necessary imo). The stock assembly is also compatible with sanwa gates if you want to replace those and comes stock with a square gate. It is cross platform compatible but I have only used it on pc, ps3, and ps4. Its a great stick for the price and putting Sanwa stuff in it makes it on par with $150+ sticks.
>>
>>3752083
So if I get that then install this, it should be pretty much perfect, right? (sans the buttons, but those can always be swapped out later)

https://www.amazon.com/Sanwa-JLF-TP-8YT-SK-Adjustable-Tournament-Compatible/dp/B0027Z7L5I/ref=pd_sim_147_4/163-3509410-3651658?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0027Z7L5I&pd_rd_r=SFTRFNQ1P0ATMQA8Y88S&pd_rd_w=hE8W0&pd_rd_wg=5rhjq&psc=1&refRID=SFTRFNQ1P0ATMQA8Y88S

Sort of. The Sanwa switches are soldered to a board with a connector. In the Mayflash instead of that the switches are loose and simply soldered to 2 wires on each which go back to the pcb. So to use Sanwa switches you will need to either buy them loose or desolder them from the Sanwa switch board. Then cut off the wires to the stock switches and solder them to the Sanwa switches.

So you can either keep the stock switches and use that assembly which will work. However, since there isn't a board holding the switches in place I found they were a bit wobbly with the Sanwa assembly. The Mayflash assembly has four screws which clamp the gate down and this holds the switches in place much better than simply using the clips on the Sanwa assembly.

So what I did was take apart both assemblies and used the part with the screw holes from the may flash which seem to hold the switches more firmly and the rest is the Sanwa assembly. I hope that makes sense.

You can go either route but the stock assembly is very well constructed, all you really need to replace are the buttons which feel rather cheap imo.

There's a simple trick. If you bring that levitation item into the final dungeon, get the invincibility item within, you can levitate to the final boss's room and fight him while still invincible.
