Is the King's Field series worth a play?
>>3745047
Some may say "yeah" but personally I think they're unplayable now.
I don't mind cryptic shit in my games, I like to think a little here and then, but KF is waaay too cryptic for it's own good, and when you have clunky slow (understandably) controls, it just makes things more tedious.
I'm sure it was fine for its time because there wasn't a lot to compare it to but now I just can't play it, and I tried a lot.

I'm often a purist other than for convenience but I maintain that the Playstation Kings Field games are better through emulation because you can do custom bindings to get dual analog controls and you can overclock it. Shadow Tower isn't quite as slow but it still benefits from the control binding.
I thought the ones I played on ps1 were great back in the day. I was really excited when I heard kings field the ancient city was coming out on ps2, but when I got it there was something weird about the camera and movement that gives me a massive headache after only playing for a few minutes. I tried to play it many times but it always happened and it was too much to just deal with and keep playing. Still haven't heard about anyone else with similar issues, and it's the only first person game I've ever had a problem with playing.
>Old Nintendo games can cost hundreds of dollars
How doesn't this inspire dishonesty in people? Shit, I wouldn't leave a $5 item lying around outside. People will steal anything that isn't tied down.
How do you know if you spend hundreds of dollars on a game that you're not getting a reproduction?
>>3744946
Any expensive game will probably have pictures of the PCB, but for most repros, the shells are a dead giveaway (plastic screws on SNES repros, saying GAME instead of Nintendo Game Boy on GB repros, etc).
A trained eye can tell by the label. An untrained eye can tell by opening it up and seeing an afro-rigged board.
Learn how to analyze things, especially the PCBs. I do predict, though, that as scum make better and better bootlegs, the market will get flooded with legitimate looking carts and some of the fad hoppers might move on. But who knows.
There's even people who bootleg prototypes, which is extremely shitty.
Lets call some obvious ones. Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania III, Street Fighter 2010 etc.
I just finished Mega Man X with friends. It took like 3 hours for us to master and finish those three last bosses.
>Megaman X
But that's easier than shooting Womp Rats back on Tatooine

Dog is easy, use penguin's weapon. It's pattern is kind of unpredictable but it goes down fast.
Sigma can easily be cheesed. Wall jump into the top corner and let sigma bounce off the walls three times. After the third one fall, as he tries to bounce back on the ground you can attack him in place and his jump will be just over your head. When he finally lands just wall jump to the corner and repeat.
Sigma Wolf (I assume that's its name) is pure skill. Most annoying attack in my opinion is the fire since even if you hug the walls the hands still have a a chance of shooting lightning over you.
Am I obscure yet, /vr/oom /vr/ooms?

shit no, this game got hacked into a mario game and was played by millions of Russians.
here's some REAL obscure.

ITT: your favorite JRPG
I don't know if it's my favorite, but it's the only one I ever finished. That has to count for something.
Now that the dust has finally settled...
What wentright?
Sometimes you just gotta Bug out with your nug out.

Game's shit.
In some alternate reality Bug succeeded as Sega's new mascot after Sonic and Bug Adventure was an amazing game.
Since /v/ won't help, I'll reduce my search to games that are considered retro. This is a specific mechanic I'm looking for
>Game with RPG elements
>It isn't turn based nor is it the traditional real time with prolonged animations
>each fight between characters or units consist of quick scuffles that may consist of an animation and ends within a matter of seconds
Basically, I'm looking for a game that auto-determines the winner of a fight between characters once encountering them; rather than showing a prolonged battle animation
Does such a game exist in the retro realm? Pic unrelated
I would say Earthbound or Secret of Mana, but I don't know of any that do it automatically.
That sounds an awful lot like Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (For Frog the Bell Tolls)

Bumping, I'm interested to see if I got OP's game right.
Was there ever a game you enjoyed more the second time you played it? I borrowed this from a friend like, a year ago and I borrowed it again recently. I'm kinda poo at games, so maybe I liked it more because it wasn't close to as frustrating as the first time. Playing it again was amazing, definitely a top 10 game in my book now.
Fallout is a game that's better on the second replay, I think. Your first time you're struggling with figuring out how to build a good character and with unintended consequences of your actions. The second play through where you actually know what you're doing is a lot smoother, and there's a good chance it'll be more fun since you'll understand the system well enough that you can build a character who is to your liking.
>>3744404
what is it about this game that gives it such a retro feel?
Yes, this because you can experience the plot from a whole new perspective once you know the secret of the black monster.
Hey guys, any thoughts on if this everdrive n8 is legit? I got it through a Canadian seller and want to update it, but I'm just worried about it maybe being a bootleg and me bricking the thing.
>>3744154
It doesn't say Nintendo. It's definitely a bootleg.
>>3744185
Well the PCB image on the Krikz site doesn't have Nintendo either as far as I can tell.. pic related
>>3744154
why not just ask Krikkzz himself?
Not limited to retro, but I thought it would fit best here.
So I played Quake, Jedi Knight: DF2 and Shadow Warrior recently. Also played a lot of shooters back in the day. All three of those games have amazing challenging gameplay and are fun to play. However, I found that the quicksave/save anytime you want feature somehow takes a bit of the fun away.
I also cant just play them without saving or limit myself to ten saves per level. I mean you can go for this artificial difficulty, but those games are obviously designed to have a quicksave feature.
It just feels like having unlimited lives, its what it is. Its actually pretty similar to playing roms with savestates. The accomplishment is much less. Just a matter of time when you will get through.
On the other hand, if there would be no such save feature, the games would be very different and we would miss out on a lot.
I like the challenge in some modern shooters with checkpoints, but I hate a lot other stuff about it(no health, ammo, item management, refilling health is just dumb).
I really like Turok on console. Challenging and very rewarding when you beat stuff. An extra-life feature to make up for the high difficulty.
what is your opinion on quicksave?
>>3744031
Can be great if you have the self control not to abuse them.
save states can improve a lot of retro games but can also really sap the fun out of them if you rely on them instead of gittin gud (in my experience).
They're 100% shit except for replacing a password feature
Even that's sometimes cheating since some passwords don't keep track of your current life and such
>>3744049
>Playing a game that has any sort of saving function.
Dumbass.
Let us see where the majority went;
Did you go for the Fire temple or the Forest temple first when you became an adult in Ocarina of Time?
I went for the Fire temple first, don't really know why as I was 8 at the time.
I guarantee the answer is Forest for most
When I first played the game I entered the Ice Cavern.
I suspect more than a few playtesters at NoA did this too since there's official promotional material of Link fighting Phantom Ganon with the Zora Tunic.
>>3744004
Went for Forest Temple but found myself more going to fire temple when realizing I could. Some people think you can do the Water Temple first but only to a certain extent without the bow. Mine as well not count it cause you need to go through part of the Forest Temple to complete it.
so this...is the power...of...........resellers
>>3743982
Collector's items tend to raise it price over time and with popularity. How is this actually surprising to anyone?
>>3743991
It's not surprising, as much as it is utterly retarded.
>starts mainly in 2012
AGDQ is this cause, I hate those faggots
>>3743982
If anything, this trend makes me feel better about splurging on games, because no matter what I buy, if I regret it, I can easily resell it for the same or more within a few months.
