Metroid Rogue Dawn 1.0 has been released. It's a substantial hack of Metroid for the NES by Grimlock, Snarfblam and Optomon. Get the patched ROM here: http://www38.zippyshare.com/v/s7NFT7XA/file.html
>>
Stuck in the water area. Not sure where to go. This game is fun and has nice spritework, but is also confusing.
>>
So what is this hack about?
>>

Original Metroid is a far better game than Super.
>>
Fun ROM hack, but the last boss area is pure cancer. It's way worse than the original Mother Brain fight.
>>
This is a lot of fun, but wow the upgrades come fast as shit.

Also, The Grim Picker really took me out of the game. Like I actually said, "Aww, what the fuck?" and put the controller down for a while.

You are full of shit.

does it work on the NES mini?

It's not "better", but it's a great game in its own right, and the OP screenshot looks really nice. Thanks for the link, OP!

Why the fuck did they use clunk-ass NES Metroid for this when editing SM is piss-easy with SMILE? Why is the map so tiny it's useless?
>>
>>3736998

played it for an hour or so last night. has some good ideas, but many glaring flaws, most importantly the confusing, samey looking level design and the boring stage layout

also, the jumping controls seem really slippery at times and are much worse than they are in the original Metroid.

and I agree with the other posters, the map is a completely useless eyesore. a pause screen map would be much better.
>>
>all this salt by Super Metroid fans

It's a great game and all but it's impressive to do this for an NES game.

Why is the pause menu map stamp-sized?
>>
>>3739282
It's more about choosing the worst possible concept for an OC in an established franchise.
>>
2 bosses in (out of what appears to be 4 or 5 on the map) and I'm enjoying it.

This feels about as good as a NES Metroid hack could possibly be, but it's still NES Metroid and christ it can be difficult to control sometimes.
>>
>>3739591
Because it's made with sprites. So 7 sprite wide map with an 8th for the player marker will fill the 8 sprite per scanline limit.
>>
Anyone else run out of missiles on the final boss? I was pretty pissed. I got nothing but health drops almost the entire time and had no way to finish the fight. Meh, needed a break anyway.

Really love this hack though. I'm especially impressed by some of the water effects randomly sprinkled throughout.

How many tile-metroids are there? I ran into three while playing.

This one was in a pretty silly area. I tried to break into the experimental weapons lab early using the door glitch, but you just end up in this room instead.

This does not seem like it's worth playing but I am giving it a go just because.

I will report back soon.
>>

Nah, it's totally worth playing. I had a blast and will probably try speed-running it at some point, too.

The devs pulled off some neat tricks, both visually and also with the layout.

>>3740061
Oh, I hadn't found that one! The only one I knew of was in the last area.

It's a very minor thing, but I love how the jumping enemies and the original bosses use their famicom attack patterns. This was definitely made by someone who loves their Metroid 1.

The other one I saw was in the water area. There's an enemy spawner you can morph into and bomb open.
>>
>>3740079
I don't like it. Terrible general color choices, terrible level design. First non-missile item is what seems like the hi jump boots.. or not, hard to tell when you are FUCKING UNDERWATER when you get them and just have to move on and no item name pop up or anything and the game does not come with a manual. So all anyone has is their assumption about the boots. What would anyone who has not played any Metroid game ever think that they got since the game does not tell it? There's a boots looking item you get and you don't even get to really test them out right away and there is no text pop up or anything. Also the missiles that you can get wayyyy before anything else and like 10-15 minutes later there's still nothing to use them on. Fucking rank amateurs. I spit on this hack.
>>
>>3740183
All Metroid hacks are for Metroid autists, not normal people.
>>
>>3739856
I've had it happen in the original game. Sometimes the RNG just tells you to fuck off. The best thing you can do is try to find a spot where you can gather 2-3 metroids and kill them all at once.

>>
>>3740189
Nah, I'm pretty normie when it comes to hacks. I generally won't touch them.

But this is pretty damned good, and if you take the time to play it this becomes obvious. A lot of attention to detail went into making this.

That said, not everyone is going to like it. There are things about it I don't like, too. But there is so much more good than bad that I can't imagine anyone who plays it to the end comes away with a bad after-taste.
>>
Neat. But how does rom-hacking add new features like saving or those rain effects when it's using the same metroid 1 engine? Wouldn't it be easier to hack a more feature rich game and make it metroid themed?

Agreed. I booted up Metroid on my old CRT after finishing Rogue Dawn for comparison. It looked pretty damned good for such an early NES title to be honest. Though Samus is much larger than Dawn, and that surprised me. I also used the Justin Bailey code just so that I would have something to fuck around with, and it starts you in Norfair obviously. The totems on either side of the teleporter looked fucking fantastic, and I actually went full autism studying them for over a minute before moving on.

The dudes saying that these old games are ugly are playing them via emulation on a high-resolution flat screen. Playing them in 240p on an old CRT looks pretty damned good.

Alright this warping maze bullshit in the overgrowth area can suck my dick, I managed to be a cheeky cunt and walljump and morphball up into this area I marked with a 1, only to find myself trapped in more warping maze shit. I got walljump, hi jump, varia, wave, and ice beam, but this warp shit is really chapping my ass and sucking the fun out really quick
>>
>>3741581
You've probably figured it out by now, but it helps to know that walljump and ice beam aren't needed for any of the warping sections.
>>
>>3741581
Yeah I rather dislike these warping areas myself. Not even the two warp mazes, but the general warping you'll do in some of the other areas.

The solution to the warp maze in the chozo ruins area is to bomb the floor at the bottom of the middle shaft where your ??????s are
>>

You need to go up into the vent here. You'll end up at the small shaft you exited from when you beat the boss of the area (warp bullshit).
What you need to do is wall-jump up the shaft, which will bring you to a different location.
You'll see a door first, that leads to the Metroid Art for the Science Ship.
Go up the shaft further and you'll come to a room with a Health Machine on the right edge of the screen. Pass through that to start your Mushroom Kingdom adventure.

I finally found all of these. There is one in each area, so 6 total. Very cool, and had fun looking for them. I wish I could take screenshots of each, but I'm emulating on the Game Cube. FCE Ultra GX doesn't have the option.

There are actually a LOT of Easter eggs. I found a room in the Hub Ship that had "Grimlock's Useless Code" too. Not sure what that was about though.

Also, I cannot seem to keep the E-tank you get in the Mushroom Kingdom. Is this a glitch, or is it normal? That tank looked different than the others, and I'm not sure if I should try again. It was a bit of a pain the first time... Maybe I shouldn't have taken the research team's one.

v1.20 Changelog
In no particular order

1. Fix Permastuck spots discovered (5 spots have been corrected).
2. Limit warping in jungle area to Chozo ruins and redesign hive (done).
3. Open up a few locations where players were having difficulty jumping (about 4 locations fixed).
4. Make drop shafts in Metroid hive less brutal (in progress, you won't fall all the way to the bottom anymore ).
5. Seal off a few passagways that may be causing people to go in circles (such as in the under water area).
6. Reduce the loop back in a couple spots in the ruins.
7. Change a few enemies from indestructible to destructible in tight areas.
8. Add wall jump marker to pause map and potentially tune it up a bit more.
9. Reduce scope of the secret area and eliminate the warping/scrolling that loops you back.
10. Correct release date in readme
11. Add Change Log to readme
12. See if I can change the 10 missile doors to 5
13. Remove block in underwater area

Potential ASM items :

(I'll talk to Snarfblam but I'm not going to commit him to doing any changes)

1. Add missile recharge to all chargers (so missile + health)
2. Potential item collection/tracking issue (This may be fixable in Editroid during my update)

Responding to myself because I figured it out.

There are 6 E-tanks that are legit, and then there is a 7th one you find in a 'bonus area' which doesn't count. I thought the one from the bonus area did count and stopped searching for the real one too early. Just noticed the hiding spot of the final real one on my third play-through as I was heading to Nu-Kraid.

Welp, that brings me to 100% in under 2 hours. Hell of a good game! Gonna take a break from playing it for a few days to allow my brother to beat it too before I challenge him to some speed runs.

I used that trick to get the screw attack backwards, you know that little path you go through with bombs and drop out after picking it up? Yeah I shot up into that, walljumped up there, and bombed up into that nook. I felt so clever being a cheeky cunt like that.

Wall jumping feels surprisingly good in this hack
>>
>>3744171
Yeah, wall jump is more fun than space jump to be honest, for the reason that you have to use a bit more brain-power to get the most out of it. Combining it with MIA and bombing capability allows access to some neat short-cuts.

It should, as that device supports MMC3 for Mario games, which is the mapper that this hack relies on. Keep in mind that MMC3 emulation on that device is not perfect, so if some crazy code in this hack hits things in a weird and unconventional way, you may run into some small visual bugs. I don't own one myself to say if so or not, but I think you'll be fine for the most part if not completely.

Gonna have to agree a lot here. The beginning of the game is _dire_. In addition to the things you listed, the map is super unhelpful to a new player at the start. Everything on the planet is long vertical and horizontal shafts with no side "rooms" to serve as a goal. I was excited when I found the "secret" missile upgrade right near the beginning inside the space pirate ship, but quickly lost that feeling as I couldn't find anything to actually use them on.

Dawn's sprite needs to use colors that aren't the same as the platforms and walls, I find myself running around with missiles on just for the added color.

Compared to the 30th anniversary Super Pitfall romhack, it's almost amazing how the shitty game was turned into something fun while the amazing game was turned into something that feels like a slog.
>>
What's in the jungle/chozo maze that I need? Because I got the Varia, killed Not-Kraid, and swiped some poor sap's e-tank, but I feel like I'm missing something to progress.

Also, what's the point of the map with so many warp puzzles?
>>
>>3745592
nvm, I just remembered a whole section I haven't touched yet
>>
>>3745592
>What's in the jungle/chozo maze that I need?
You got what you need. The rest is more missile expansion upgrades, and another Energy Tank that doesn't require leaving the research team to die.

>Also, what's the point of the map with so many warp puzzles?
It just a challenge. I think it fits the theme of the area, but apparently a lot of people are annoyed by it. Personally, I found it fun.
>>
Goddammit, this looks gorgeous. Like, possibly the best-looking NES hack I've seen. How did they get it looking so nice? Can't wait to play later.
>>
Where's the wall jump or the access bridge that uses two codes? Whichever comes first, that is.
>>
>>3745861
Haven't you played Metroid before? That's the bridge to Not-Tourian. You're not getting past it until the end of the game.
>>
>>3745879
That's why I said whichever comes first.

I'm hunting for either the wall jump or the bridge, because without either, I can't progress.

Come to think of it, I think it's the Wall Jump that doesn't have a maker on the map.
Try looking here. Use Planetary Access Lift-1 and bomb the sand directly under it to start your explorations.

Once you find the wall-jump you'll be able to explore more of the Pirate Ship and find your way to the Access Bridge.

Don't give up. It's a rather unforgiving way to start for people who aren't hardcore NES/Metroid [1] fans. Personally, I loved it. It has been a while since I played a game that assumed I was intelligent enough to figure things out on my own.

Do yourself a favor and don't ask for help.

One of the things I liked most about this release was that there was zero information available when I got stuck. I had to wander around and figure it out on my own, just like I did back when I was a kid. I forgot how awesome and rewarding that can be.

I took me over 8 hours to beat this hack my first time though, and now that I can 100% it in about 1.5 hours, I really wish I could go back to being lost again.

DUDES!!! Oh, man! I just had the best idea ever. Metroid with Diablo styled environments. So every time you load a new game, the general area layout is the same. But the rooms and upgrades within those stages gets re-arranged with each new game as well.

My dick is diamonds over this. Is this a thing? Does anyone know any hacks like this?
>>

>>
>>3751305
So this is neat, but not exactly what I had in mind.

To be honest, it seems like an awfully difficult thing to implement well in a 2d side-scrolling platformer which relies on particular upgrades for progress in specific scenarios. Whereas in Diablo, you're not gaining hard-coded upgrades as much as gaining levels and better loot to progress. So because everything is more arbitrary, it can be more fluid without breaking the game entirely.

Nah, it's cool. Do you.

There's also item randomizer hacks for Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. These hacks don't mess with the level layout at all, just swapping around item locations. It's less rigid than route randomizer since you can still sequence break and such.

Still not quite what you're looking for, but it may be more enjoyable.

welp on the one hand i was very impressed with the graphics and polish, it was technically impressive

on the other hand i didnt really enjoy it very much, the level design was kinda balls and lord almighty the warps are frustrating

also I picked up the mushroom kingdom tank but lost it after saving and i was a salty sarcosuchus
>>
>>3752504
You can't keep that e-tank; it's glitched. If you played 1.0, there's also an extra missile pick-up at the bottom of the leftmost shaft in new Norfair near where you get wall jump that you also cannot keep after saving. The missile pick-up was removed in 1.1, but the e-tank was left in...

Speaking of that, the lead creator is apparently working on 1.2, which removes most of the warping, among other changes.

Personally, I liked it quite a bit as it is, and I have no interest in his newer adjustments.

We can escalate like that as long as you want, pal. It's an anti-argument.

People can do whatever the fuck they want, buddy. Romhacking is already arbitrarily retro hobby. And Metroid is a genuinely good game, and it sold better than Super Metroid - it's just got a bad rep because it's pretty inaccessible/obtuse early on.

kek

Samus is a genocidal racist terrorist with reputation for blowing up planets, she only seems as a good guy because we're seeing things through her eyes in wartime.

It seems that, judging by context clues, we could guess that if Dread were to ever come out, it'd involve Samus getting hunted by Feds for being too much of a loose cannon due to BSL and Bottle Ship bullshit.
