Trying to play Carmageddon but it hangs at the SCI splash screen. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Which version are you trying to run? Steam/GOG release, original DOS, 3DFX, carma95?
>>3944039
Original DOS I think, I haven't seen a Win95 version.
>>3944094
I never heard about the game hanging at the intro cutscenes. Kinda sounds like it fails to read from the CD. If you're in DOSBox you can try running it windowed and/or with another renderer. Would be easier to buy/pirate the GOG version, or to grab the Meld Pack (though it merges the Splat Pack expansion into C1 and only comes with Carma95) http://rr2000.toshiba-3.com/carmageddon-1#mods
What's the comfiest season?

How the fuck are you gonna get to those middle crops?

He's not unless he cuts down some of those plants. The best row layout is:

XXXXXX XXXXXX
XXXXXX XXXXXX
XXXXXX XXXXXX
Does it still hold up today? Or has it been rendered obsolete due to remakes/remasters?
Yes.
Honestly it holds up better than 2 just because the limited mechanics keep it from being overly easy. Best be playing on expert mode though.
> Implying mgs isn't a remake itself.
>>3943732
The remake is worse because they didn't re-design the levels so first-person aiming and shooting makes the whole thing a cake walk.
The original is still good, but it's from a time when people were actually concerned about the threat of nuclear war so I don't know how relatable it is to kids these days.
Alternatively, what did EA mean by it?
By what? I'm not seeing any text.

The "game"
it was a good game
http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/tim-cain-at-reboot-develop-2017-building-a-better-rpg-seven-mistakes-to-avoid.114809/
>Mistake #1 - Steep Learning Curves: Tim thinks character creation in Fallout, Arcanum and other RPGs was too complex. He's experimenting with creating a completely numberless character system that uses geometric shapes to visualize attributes.
>Mistake #2 - Letting Math Trump Psychology: Revealing the influence of the years he spent developing Wildstar, Tim wants to develop mechanics that are psychologically satisfying and addictive, even at the expense of mathematical elegance. For example, he says the player's first attack against an enemy should always hit even if his overall hit percentage is the same regardless, and that rather than allow players to increase their critical hit chance, they should only be allowed to increase their critical hit damage.
What happened?
Fallout 1 > Fallout 2
Well he's right to a certain extent. All the math that used to go in to games was there because it was the best way to simulate things at the time. Technology has improved immensely, so why are we still rolling hypothetical dice for things which can be implemented with much better models?

Any idea where I can find this. I know it is from around when pokemon gold/silver came out.
>>3943558
I tried and came up with nothing other than the reddit post you got that image from. I'm fairly certain this was a magazine that was only a one shot or didn't last longer than a year because I can find no mention of it on the web. Keep in mind that early 2000's was a nebulous time for gaming magazines, new ones were popping up every fucking month. This very well could have been the only issue of Pocket Gamer.
Have you tried contacting aeropotato and seeing if he has that magazine in his possession?
>>3943583
I found one or two few covers of other issues on a retro magazine site, but what little I could find that you are right about it being short lived. It looks like aeropotato is still active so I could give that a shot. A bit strange, but I'm already going this far on a whim, so why not.
>>3943591
If you get scans or a copy of that issue and there's more pics of that woman on that cover I urge you to post them on this board.
Also, what retro magazine site? I literally couldn't find anything, granted I only searched for like 20 minutes.
Anything similar to this, Castlevania, Demons Crest for the SNES?
>>3943382
Oddworld first 2 games, Heart of Darkness, Prince of Persia, Flashback, Another World
Castlevania and Demon Crest are not that similar to Blackthorne
>>3943382
Awsome game, my current fave.
>>3943382
>>3943405
Among the ones he mentioned, Flashback and Another World are the closest to Blackthorne since they focus more on shooting and adventure elements, but in both you use energy shields rather than taking cover mechanic - but it's still about timing.
As for Castlevania - you got me thinking, actually. Aside from the two Castlevanias on the system, the only similar games I can think of are Magic Sword and Bram Stoker's Dracula.
I think you will have better luck looking on the NES, since there were more Castlevania-likes back then - like Batman, Ninja Gaiden, Holy Diver, Rygar, 8 Eyes, Kick Master. Ninja Gaiden technically has a SNES compilation port, but it kinda sucks balls.
As for Demons Crest - I recommend Gargoyle's Quest on the Game Boy, it's part of the same series.
Never played much adventure/point'n click games but I kinda want to try something now. It's a great bonus if the game has that 90s feel.
Any recommendations?
Zork: Grand Inquisitor caught my eye, mostly because my brother had a demo of it when I was still pint-sized.
Play the old Sierra adventures (King's Quest series, Space Quest series, Leisure Suit Larry series).
Skip the Police Quest series since that one can hardly be called a game. You have to follow the official police procedure to the letter.
>>3943305
Police quest is cool, don't listen to him.
Toonstruck is one of the last good point and clicks. I really love that game for its charming atmosphere and memorable characters. Phantasmagoria was one I remember liking, mostly for the adult themes. I hear the Island of Monkies game was good, kind of obscure but supposedly a good game.
>creates genre
>remains the best entry in said genre despite being 23 years old
>even Nintendo's own attempts at the genre after this were worse
Will there ever be such a masterpiece again? I swear, every other Metroidvania game I have played has just felt "Not Super Metroid/10". That doesn't mean they aren't good of course, there are some fantastic entries in the genre besides SM, but none have seem to have done it quite as well. AM2R was a very good attempt though.
>>3942484
>creates genre
>sequel to game with the same gameplay
Technically Maze of Galious came first with the Metroidvania concept.
>>3942493
It really isn't though. Metroid 1 and 2 are very different entities. Metroid 2 is ungodly linear, and Metroid 1 has essentially no item progression.
How did the foot soldiers travel back in time? They seemed to be waiting for them.
>>3942428
they arrived about 10 minutes before the turtles. just enough time to get into costume.
the foot clan is eternal
>>3942428
They arrived right before you did. I'm sorry.
Is this thing decent if I wish to use it for playing GB and GBC games? I use my Super Game Boy 2 currently for GB stuff, but sadly it can't play GBC games, which limits you quite a bit.
It most certainly is, especially if you have a good set to play it on.
>>3942435
Too bad the Gamecube's d-pad is kinda shit tier. That's the main downfall I think.
More importantly, are there any good ways of loading Gameboy Interface?
XenoGC and then burning a disk is an option, but I don't really have a CD drive capable of burning mini DVDs.
Swiss is a good SD card loader, but to load Swiss you need to first need to either burn it to a mini DVD, or load it through a SD Gecko, which requires the Action Replay disk, and SD Gecko is limited to a 2gb SD card, which is super shitty.
Ideally I'd use a Wiikey/WASP Fusion, but those are long out of production and out of stock everywhere.
If a game offers you to save your game whenever, outside safe zones, even mid-combat, do you save all the time? Or do you limit yourself, like only saving at the start of a chapter or in towns?
Pic sort of related, if you will you can save after every clean hit, every defused trap.
>>3942259
For me, it goes like this.
I play and play and play and then die and get started from the very beginning because I forgot saving even existed.
From that point I try to save frequently so even If I die I wont have to play more than a minute or two to get back to where I was.
Save abuse is present if load times are near instantaneous. Im not going to wait half a minute just because some random mob hit me once.
>>3942259
MMVI is "supposed" to be played autosave-only; your party never really dies and money can be banked so it isn't lost. :) Doing it otherwise lacks the adrenaline.
In general, I save like a madman while playing stealth games or anything similar that requires obscene precision. I roll with the punches on everything else, saving at appropriate intervals. Some games I do autosave only.
>>3942259
I save in the beginning of a quest or by entering a new area.
If I die, I reload and then save before the moment I die so I dont have to replay same section 3d time - 2 times is enough.
Is there a universal usb adapter that has inputs for NES, SNES, and N64 controllers?
>>3942184
i have seen people build them out of 3 individual usb adapters. Put them in a small box that has an USB hub inside and there goes your multi adapter.
I often thought about a smart usb connector that will recognize any controller you plug into it.

And so much more, too.
>>3942184
Yes
You don't beat a game unless you play on legit hardware.
>>3942128
I meant more like what makes you keep playing, and what makes you drop it.
I'd say 100% clear without any cheats, warps, or functions not afforded to you by the game itself (as in, no save-stating, slow motion, or Game Genie).
For arcade games, 1CC or whatever other in-game requirements are presented to receive the true ending.
Is there any other Shmup, or game in general, with the same artstyle and visual flare as Puls/Blazing Star?
I really love this game. It still looks amazing
>>3942029
Looks like shitty prerendered CG to me
