Among the ones he mentioned, Flashback and Another World are the closest to Blackthorne since they focus more on shooting and adventure elements, but in both you use energy shields rather than taking cover mechanic - but it's still about timing.

As for Castlevania - you got me thinking, actually. Aside from the two Castlevanias on the system, the only similar games I can think of are Magic Sword and Bram Stoker's Dracula.
I think you will have better luck looking on the NES, since there were more Castlevania-likes back then - like Batman, Ninja Gaiden, Holy Diver, Rygar, 8 Eyes, Kick Master. Ninja Gaiden technically has a SNES compilation port, but it kinda sucks balls.

As for Demons Crest - I recommend Gargoyle's Quest on the Game Boy, it's part of the same series.

Truly one of the top 10 most awesome and manly games on the SNES. Used to watch my older brother play it a lot when we were younger.

Nosferatu is a very nice looking prince of persia type of game.

psycho dream is a very bizarre castlevania like game.

ghost sweeper mikam is another pretty fun castlevania like game.
