I started Fallout 1 a couple of days ago and played for a few hours before losing interest. Made it to the Boneyard.
Holy fucking shit Deathclaws are the scariest motherfuckers there is. Fallout 3 Deathclaws are teddybears compared to this.

I haven't played that far in yet, I cleared the scorpion cave, got dogmeat, killed gizmo and am currently in the process of fucking up the great khans.
I find it a tough game to marathon I like to play for an hour take a break and come back to it later.

i haven't played all of them,
have you tried simply copying the files out of the VM, in many cases only the installer wont run on modern stuff, and you can play the game if you copy the instaled folder.
but i would bet that alternatives exist for all those games, or at least for the good ones, between open source and flash i have played a few remakes of the ones i liked

Is there a retro equivalent to Dark Souls? By that, I mean a game that might have been considered notoriously challenging back in its day, and has a similar setting or gameplay style as DS.
Something like Ghosts 'n Goblins, King's Field or Vagrant Story immediately comes to mind. What else?

it has its pros and cons. Art style was genius though. Even during cutscenes and still the characters retain a low poly and hardly textured or untextured look. As a result, gameplay and story mesh exceptionally well

I remembered my brother playing this game when I was a kid and I've been rebuilding my own Mega Drive collection in the past few years. The other day I ordered this for the sake of nostalgia.
Holy mother of Asian fuck, this game is fucking hard and bullshit as shit. Half the time your attacks go through the opponent and how the fuck are you supposed to block low when down/back makes you backflip?
I looked it up online and there's a distinct lack of any guides explaining how to play this game. I want to beat it but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I've tried to play this like a fighting game, like blocking and reacting but the CPU is just too good at countering/interrupting me.
I remember watching my brother getting to the very last boss with all his lives and simply losing so I never even experienced this game's ending.

I had a Nintendo 64 growing up, so recently I've been giving this console a shot and seeing what I missed.
Granted, it does 2D/prerendered stuff all right, but what the fuck is with the 3D? Every polygon and texture just jitters all over the place. You never know where the devs intended anything to be because all it takes is a slight camera movement to knock everything out of position.
Who thought this was acceptable? Even the fucking Jaguar didn't have these issues, and that came out over a year before. There already existed 3D arcade games in the late '80s that didn't do this shit. So how did they fuck this thing up so bad?
And some people prefer the PS1's 3D over the N64's? Fucking why? PS1 is a bullshot console, plain and simple.

Definitely the dreamcast for 2, it has much higher resolution textures than the 64 version and the ps1 version is awful.
For the first game the sound was better on the ps1 version than the saturn, I'm doubting you'd want to play the original 3do version.

I've been working on a few arcade ports, but the ones I've been stuck on lately are Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara, two excellent games I unfortunately suck at. Hope springs eternal, but I'm still at the stage where I die pretty early on pretty consistently.

Those are on my list. I had a Tower of Doom machine at the local pizza joint (as well as a Star Wars pinball) but I sadly barely ever got out there and now it's gone.
I'm stuck on Night Slashers right now. I've 1CCed a few console titles, but arcade games remain elusive.
