Trying to learn to speedrun Super Metroid with an Xbox360 controller is miserable.

honestly dawg, if you want to learn speedrunning you need to do it on an OG snes. but if you cant afford it/ dont want to move over to the real deal (https://www.amazon.com/Buffalo-Classic-USB-Gamepad-PC/dp/B002B9XB0E) this an alright choice

Anyone on /vr/ a fan of the Wizardry series?

Yes Wizardry 8 is great but fuck does it get hard especially later on.
>>
I think the whole fucking series is garbage, but that's just like, my opinion, dude.
>>
I liked 1, 5 and 6.

Skies of Arcadia thread.

My favourite RPG

I love the dynamic battle music. It goes from "Keep it up!" to "Oh shit we're gonna die!" to "We're totally kicking this thing's ass now!" I wish that were a more common thing.
>>
>>3316317
Yeah I loved that. It made things really tense
>>
>>3316317
Phantasy Star Online 2 does it. It's quite subtle because when shit gets bad you're not listening to the music.

Help me out, /vr/. I want to get into this series and the steam sale seems like a good opportunity for that but I don't know where to start.

You can start with VI, VII or IX. Those are probably the best starting points.

Avoid the VI HD edition though, it's grotesquely ugly. Can you get the regular one on Steam?
>>
Yes, they are all excellent purchases. Don't worry about the emufags telling you are doing the wrong thing. Squeenix is still a fantastic company and you should support them bringing old games to new platforms.
>>
>"Hey, guys! Please recommend a good place to start with a series that has possibly the most divisive fanbase in existence!"

Oh boy, yet another iteration of this thread. I'm sure this one will turn out well, contrary to the dozens of abortive shitfests that preceded it.

How about you do like the rest of us had to and play the games in order of release date?

I've got a new one for you guys.

I went to play Harvest Moon on the SNES today and was shocked to see my save file in slot 1 was gone. HOWEVER. The save file in slot 2 was still there. How is it possible to lose one save file and not the other? Obviously the battery still works if the 2nd save is there.

>>3315959
You probably deleted save file 1.
>>
>>3315982
I don't think you can delete the save files in HM for SNES. You just save over the old ones.
>>
You probably didn't put the cartridge in all the way and screwed you save files. Had it happen to me plenty of times with other games

What engine is Witchhaven based on?
>>
Only ever had the demo (providing this's Witchhaven 2 and not the first) loved that demo. All the spells and different potion effects and stuff made it feel hella different, though an entirely meleefocused fps was hard to work in those days. Used to love this sword/morning star combo you could whip through stuff with.

People seem to really hate the first.

I love gen 3 & 4 games, but I'm just awful at them. I don't think I've beaten more than 5 games from before gen 5. Should I give up or are there any easyfun games out on gen 2, 3 and 4 systems?

It depends how you define 'easyfun' games.
The second gen is about getting 'easyfun' - you pop a cartridge, turn on the power switch and play till the end of your try. Gain more points than you did - pure arcade fun. If you want some more complicated second gen fun, you should try Intellivision, Colecovision; their games generally are more complicated than Atari 2600 games, but still they are easy to play.
At the other side you MUST read manuals. As for Atari 2600, game modes are represented with numbers and you are going to have no clues what the Game 9 in Space Invaders for Atari 2600 stands for. It's fun mode though. As for Intellivision, just look how many buttons controller has.
Early NES (or rather Famicom) games without MMCs and other expansions on the cartridge board are pretty similar to second gen games - they don't share tons of text and have pretty arcade nature if they aren't ports of arcade games. I'd say, NES is the way to go if you want to play the earliest games but you don't want to read manuals. NES cartridges had more memory, enough for some in-game gameplay explanations. NES is the GOAT console for me because of its wide variety of games. Master System is worth noting, but I'm not master in this system subject.
As for the fourth gen, your guide to 'easyfun' games is the Genesis. Sega was the strong acrade company and many Genesis games share arcade nature. Don't get me wrong - SNES is a good console, but its strong side is RPGs, if you're excited by tons of text you'd better even try old computers with interactive fiction games (IF games aren't tied to any system though).
The fifth gen is about Playstation for a one player.

Games are even more fun if you have someone to play with. If you have, you should definitely try Nintendo 64, because it is constructed for multiplayer fun. Goddamn Video Olympics for Atari 2600 are pretty fun with one more player.

And I didn't talk about computer games yet.

Kirby games is the definition of "easyfun" games

Is it just me or is Duke 3D pretty underrated? Doom seems to get all the spotlight anymore and I hardly hear anyone talk about Duke nowadays. Sure DNF took some of the wind out of the series sails, but fuck that game, not retro anyway. I know Duke 3d is more popular and discussed than other games of it's day like Blood or Shadow Warrior, still and it may just be me, it feels like it's an underrated game.

Nobody talks about Duke nowadays because it's not as accesible as Doom in regards of source ports and the modding scene.

Good game, way harder than Doom, it's a shame eDuke32 is the only way to play it without becoming insane
>>
Duke doesn't get as much love as Doom because Doom is easier to make content for. Theyre both old as motherfuck so the only thing keeping the community alive is new content and Doom has a lot more of that than Douk. Plenty of people rate the game, but it's not going to have the popularity of Doom because it doesn't have the constant trickle of new maps to play. It's like asking why nobody talks about Marathon anymore, it is definitely a good game but the editor is a bitch to get used to so relatively few people can make new content.

Metal Gear Solid photos take up 2 block on the memory card. 2 BLOCKS! A normal card only has 15 blocks total.
35 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>3314142
The memory card is 1MB, We can assume that each block is worth 68KB. If something takes up more than 68KB of space but less than 137KB, then it will take up 2 blocks.

If the images are saved in decent quality (not played MGS1 in centuries), taking up around 80-90KB is not unreasonable. The real problem here is that the memory card is shit, unlike the PS2 memory card which could handle any filesize within the 8MB limit.
>>
If you ever played Music 2000 (or MTV Music Generator in the US) you could record a sample from any CD to use in your song. A cool idea, but because you were storing an uncompressed.wav on the memory card just one sample usually ended up taking up half the blocks. I bought hordes of memory cards to try to get around this but they filled quick.
>>
>>3314142
Diablo 1 used 10 blocks just to save your character data, what's your point?

I have been the original super mario land around 6 times since it is the shortest game i have played. There are only 4 worlds in it and 16 levels and i can beat it within a hour.

Yeah, lot of times. And often I imposed myself some rules.
>>
TMNT on NES and Wonderboy in Monster Land on SMS. Couldn't beat either as a kid, can smash both these days. I think I just keep playing them and beating them out of a sense of revenge.

Technically you could buy this pack from steam (it's on sale), transfer the roms onto an everdrive, and it would be 1000000% legal and shelf collector fags would be 9000000000000% BTFO right?

Of course they are. Sega wants a quick buck. Why on earth would they waste time and money porting every game?
