What would /vr/ think of a unified grading system for retro games? Perhaps something like what coin collectors currently have.
I'm sick and tired of seeing shopkeepers trying to sell games with obvious defects for full price. This is just another facet of the growing price inflation problem that we see, and I think some kind of system could help curb that problem. Eventually, a unified system could be expanded to things like consoles and controllers.
Now the argument could be made that all that matters is the game itself, and while I would disagree with that as an absolute statement, the working condition of the cartridge should have a higher impact on the grading.
What kind of categories would you classify a cartridge with, and how would you go about scoring it objectively?
I think a decent start would be.
1. Sticker condition
Is the sticker faded? Is it scratched? Are their any signs of peeling? Are their signs of water damage? How much of it's gloss/luster does it retain? Is the manufacturers sticker in good condition?
2. Cartridge condition
Is the cartridge scratched or discolored? Are their any gouges or noticeable markings? Have the screws started any form of corrosion?
3. Working condition
Does the game work? Does it work on first boot every time? Are there known problems with it saving? Are the pins in good condition, and lacking any corrosion (erosion or chemical).
Yes, I understand that the collecting community already has a tendency to be elitist douchebags, and this might further that problem, but I'm getting sick and tired of games in shit condition being listed for full price.
no
Any grading system is bad for electronics unless it's made by actual enthusiasts and NOT collectors.
Otherwise cap replacements, battery replacements, and other preventive maintenance/repairs would downgrade a game.
Fuck anything like VGA.

Why?
And grading is fucked.
Hey /VR/, I just bought Fighters Megamix and NiGHTS today at a flea market for 20$. Nothing to brag about at all, but is there anything you guys found from flea markets for cheap or were surprised to find there?
>>3303620
I had to check the cinemassacre youtube to see if you were trolling, but there isn't a James and Mike Monday video on these games so I guess someone actually did pick a game up at a flea market.
The only retro thing I can buy at the fleamarket now is cast iron cookware
>>3303620
Not a flea market find, but coincidentally I found this copy of NiGHTS at thrift store for $3 fairly recently. It's a not for resale version, which I'm guessing is probably because it was sold with the system? I don't know if that makes it more rare or less valuable or whatever, but it's a nice find.
Hi, /vr/. I'm currently playing all the Zeldas chronologically and just finished A Link to the Past. Since I don't own a N64 and I'm a bit too poor to afford it, what would be my best bet for Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask: the Gamecube ports or the Virtual Console emulation?
GC
>>3303416
Don't emulate anything.

Am I reading too deeply into character designs, or were retro Japanese developers unanimously bisexual?
If that's some final fantasy shit, it's just nomura being a huge visual kei fanboy, and yes possibly gay too
No, that's just Shukou Murase.

Hey /vr/! I wanna start retro gaming on the cheap and I have a couple of questions.
If I build a cheapo emulation box with 240p output then is it worth getting a decent CRT? Or is there no point when I'm not using native hardware?
Is there anything specific I need to look for when purchasing a CRT? I've been looking at preowned broadcasting ones. I'll probably grab a cheap 14" one to sit under my monitor, what do you guys think?
>>3301264
do whatever is cheapest
>>3301264
You're about 14 years too late for that.
Ask the /crt/ thread some questions.

Is there a better retro robot master than Him?
Dust Man, who was created by the manga artist of One Punch Man.
>>3300870
Yes. Almost all of them.
We should define retro by consoles that were about gaming, and consoles that became multimedia systems.
I would argue that the 6th generation was the last generation to focus on gaming, and beyond that, consoles became focused solely on multimedia.
You bumped a thread off the board for this? Get AIDS
>>3300481
We'll have to ban Sega CD, Playstation, Saturn, and TGCD then.
>>3300486
It's for the best, I think.
So is Shenmue really that great? Should I be excited for 3?
>>3300342
It was breathtaking at the time. If you as a "modern gamer"*ptoi*play it now you'll experience a mixed bag of advanced visuals and surprising detail combined with what you will probably consider stiff controls and stilted dialog.
>>3300362
Ah, so it's just like modern games.
>>3300362
>If you as a "modern gamer"
What are you talking about? Shenmue was one the fist big name cinematic walking sim games. Right up modern shit alley.
What went right?

Melee. But props to that for laying the ground work.
>>3299847
Word.
The game was solid even before Nintendo characters starred in it. It was destined for success, although from what I understand it was actually a semi-budget title, they never expected Smash to become as popular as it was. I remember there was little hype before the release.

As I kid I really loved the Quest for Glory series. The exploration, building up your character, combat, puzzles, and especially humor all appealed to me.
I just learned that Heroine's Quest: Herald of Ragnarok is a sort of remake that is available on Steam. I thought this was awesome and wanted to share it because I only ran across it yesterday.
What are your experiences with QFGs. Have you found any retro games that remind you of them?
Little Big Adventure sort of fits your description.
Quest for Infamy, currently available in groupees bunlde for 50 cents (steam key).
Thanks to AGS there's probably gazillion adventure games like that, some good and some bad. Some /vr/ related and some tad newer.

Is it worth getting Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge (aka Darkstalkers 1 + 2 compilation) when you've already got Darkstalkers 3?
>>3299224
>aka Darkstalkers 1 + 2 compilation
Eh, it's just 2, however as an extra you can play with the music and colors of Darkstalkers 1
And yes definitely, Darkstalkers 2 and 3 play very differently, 2 is a bit slower paced and turtle-y, while 3 is more akin to the MvC series.
>that cover
Vampire Hunter and Savior are different and the fanbase are split when it comes to which of these two people consider the best. But both are still great capcom quality titles. But saturn ports aren't too shabby but they're also on Xbox 360 and PS3 also there's a PS2 collection but i think those are all emulated.
I decided to give this game a shot since I like the series and wanted to enjoy it's roots. I have no issue with old style JRPGs because I love Dragon Quest even more and I can forgive the crappy magic system. However there's something really bugging me about this game and it's the script, the NPCs are incredibly void of interesting dialogue and the story is poorly stitched together. Many NPCs share dialogue too. Is this a result of poor localization or was the original famicom version just as bland? You can't say it's because of the times because Dragon Quest/Warrior had much better NPC dialogue/story with more care put into it. Every NPC has something different to say.
So what made this game popular enough to save Square?
> So what made this game popular enough to save Square?
Maybe there weren't enough rpgs in the time.
RPG's were getting big in Japan and also it added in mechanics that other RPG's had that other RPG's in Japan lacked, like items that could cast their own spells, and enemy weaknesses and resistances.
>>3299082
>So what made this game popular enough to save Square?
Good gameplay(for its time).
FF was years ahead of DQ in terms of gameplay and design.
How did PCfags handle all the limits of their old games, this coming from someone that grew up with an NES and still thinks the games are good.
I tried to play Pool of Radiance and holy shit, the interface is terrible. You have to press a button to cycle through targets, there's no music and every room looks identical which makes navigation a pain. cRPGs interface are horribly dated.
By playing Darklands instead.

What OS are you running? BG tends to run on just about anything and shouldn't need a VM.
Unless you're running Linux or Mac of course. There's a config that comes with the game and that can set a framerate limit. Try that.
