Are there any guides on how the Japanese watches work? I've seen things called "upgrade kits" that are SD cards, but I can't find anything on what medals work on which watch/upgrade.

While the DreamEX looks good, the 1/6 scale is putting me off. The Figuards shredder is also good, but I've already comitted to the NECA Arcade turtles/foot clan for my 1/6 toon styled turtles.
First Gokin's Shredder looks great to me, and I loved their Krang. They're still based on the cartoon, but with a lot of cool modern touches. If First Gokin does a Foot Soldier, Splinter, and titty monster April, I'll be in heaven. The Classic Collection Turtles and Bebop/Rocksteady work well enough with the First Gokin Figures that I'll be a happy camper.

Yeah, that really is the thing making me hesitant to pre-order the figure; the chance they simply won't exist to complete their lineup. Of course, we already have Mondo And Threezero announcing their turtles figures in 1/6 so it wouldn't be too bad. At lease to I'd have a Shredder and Casey to go with them, even if they might not match stylistically.

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name of the MS on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.
Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.
Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. They're got the transformers bootlegs down to a science, honestly. They're usually a little loose, but it's fixable with future/nail polish/superglue. I've picked up a couple where the legit versions were getting crazy expensive on the aftermarket. Honestly, I wouldn't have even gotten into the masterpiece line if not for sideswipe, the original version was going for more than $120 when I got the bootleg for 30.
Stuff like figmas and figuarts tend to be much, much worse though. Actual molding differences, terrible paint for faces, joints not actually fitting into sockets, etc. It might seem like it's worth it if the price is low enough, but you'll probably regret it.
This thread's gonna be a shitstorm, btw.

To me, yes. The bootleg has no gradient shading at all in the hair, eyes and eyebrows.
The molding on the hair isn't anywhere near as sharp on the bootleg.
Another difference is the quality of accessories. The fairy in particular is easy to see here. And the figure will most likely look worse in person with scratches, dirt and weird bits.
