For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name of the MS on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

how long do these tiny cans of topcoat last?
they also have this mr. super clear flat spray that comes in a bigger can. are those basically the same things?
>>

2-3 kits at best. 20% of what's sprayed from a can actually gets on the kit
>>
>>5824628
Mr. Super Clear is Lacquer
Mr. Top Coat is Acrylic

Acrylic is safer, but weaker. If you go with Mr. Super Clear, make sure the paint as fully cured and dried. It can fuck up acrylic paint or eat through un-primered plastic. Although I've never had a problem and I mostly use Mr. Super Clear for flat coats and use acrylic paint, and never paint the white parts.

Also Mr. Super Clear comes in gloss, semi-gloss, and flat.

Lacquer thinner != acetone.
>>
Anyone know long it takes for Mr.Cement to fully set?
>>
So I dun goofed and put the wrong primer on and it had dried. What's the most effective way to get this off? It's acrylic primer from Vallejo.
>>
>>5825623
Lacquer thinner is a concoction. It will usually contain a large portion of acetone like 15-20~%.

And acetone isn't the only solvent that will attack plastic. Limonene can dissolve HIPS and to a lesser degree ABS (though this takes much longer), which is why Mr Color Limonene or whatever it's called is basically just Limonene and maybe some other junk. From personal experience, lacquer thinner will attack plastics, even stuff like PVC, but of course the effect varies from plastic to plastic.

Lacquer thinners come in different varieties with different chemicals. Here #1 contains 20% acetone and #2 contains 60% toluene (methylbenzene)
http://www.woodworkingnetwork.com/wood-blogs/what_chemicals_are_in_your_lacquer_thinner_127807253.html

Acetone and methylbenzene will melt HIPS, most HGUCs and older 1/100s. Acetone will melt ABS. You have a 50% chance according to this, but considering hobby lacquer primers chemically etch onto plastic the recommended thinners probably contain toluene or acetone to attack the surface of the plastic. If you've ever worked with PVC it's recommended you use a solvent that will attack the plastic for paint to adhere better.

http://nerfhaven.com/forums/topic/18527-intro-to-solvent-welding-plastic/
>>
>>5826011
>woodworking lacquer thinners contains bad things that can melt plastic
>therefore lacquer thinner in your hobby spray can can "eat through un-primered plastic"
There is a gap in this logic somewhere, I just can't put my finger on it.
>>
>>5826079
That's reason why lacquer paints can only be airbrushed. The solvent attacks the plastics then evaporates promptly. The end result is extremely durable paint because the pigments are fused partially into the plastic.
>>
Anyone know if any sites are selling old HGUCs like the GM real cheap?

Honestly neither, you want a compressor that has a tank so it's not on constantly and thus heating up. If the area around the water trap is hot then it simply won't work and you'll have a bunch of moisture going through the hose.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001738DXU/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_6anNxbXS6VQKQ is honestly fine even if it's not a brand name compressor; I've been using it with no problems.

You can get an 1/100 MG Heavyarms Endless Waltz Version that was released in 2012. There's other MG kits from Wing EW if you're interested in expanding from Heavyarms
>>
>>5827832
Thank a lot anon. It looks a little hard to not fuck up a 1/100 since I'm a beginner but I guess I have to start somewhere.
>>
>>5827841
If you can build a 1/144, then you can build a 1/100. there is no higher level of skill involved, just more pieces.

And to answer your quest, no, there has not been a new heavyarms kit in 1/144 since the original run of the series. In fact, that shitty olf 1/144 NG kit is still the only non-SD kit of the TV version of the design. The 1/100 MG is a katoki redesign version that has more missiles, but instead of the gattling arm it just has a giant gattling.
>>
>>5827885
>>5827885
Thanks. It's pretty sad since I love the Gatling arm design.
Is there any hopes of them making one someday in the future or is it unlikely ?
>>
>>5827885
Although if you aren't strictly atached to getting it as a model kit there is a fantastic non-scale figure of it from the Robot Damashii line which is probably the best version of the TV design currently available in any form.

Also yeah, they still make the old model kit if you really want it. You can get it for under $10 most places it's in stock.

Putting together the Full Armor Thunderbolt MG. I'm being given two options for the eyes. Solid yellow or an off-green see-through. Which one is meant to be stickered over? The only other MG kits I've put togethered had eye stickers and nothing else. Are the clear ones light piping?

For a fun effect, stick a silver decal (or silver/chrome paint) somewhere back behind the clear eyes (like what they did for the Turn A) to give it a bit more definition in those "better light conditions"

The Try Burning is kinda rubbish but its hands are great. Why doesn't every kit come with hands that can actually bend at the wrist? So many kits with rifles need it. Ironically only the holding hands on the Try Burning can't bend at the wrist. No chance of holding a bullpup rifle or bazooka.

The difficulty with pre-building it first was all the big ball joints and clear pieces all over, didn't want to pick it apart after painting. I did think a lot about I wanted to do, like the angle of of the camouflage, but that it would be difficult to make it all conform without putting it all together completely. But my thinking was that camouflage works by irregular shapes since nature doesn't do straight lines, so it would probably be fine not to pre-plan too much.

How long for primer to cure before I start putting down the base coat?
>>
>>5829121

Depends what primer it is. I'm using Stynylnrez at the moment and normally leave it a day or more but that's only because I can normally only manage 30 minutes at the bench on any given day. But I've also painted over it within 10 minutes.

If in doubt with paints, 24 hours is normally a good time to shoot for.
>>

Mr surfacer airbrushed. I dont have a large window to paint so I'm having to rush it all.

3, maybe 4 coats, and let dry for an hour is my plan.

Traditionally you can use soap and water for cleaning things well. And other various liquids used to weaken/strip acrylic paints like Windex or isopropyl alcohol mixed with water. Test yourself.

I've just decided that I might aswell just die with as many kits as possible. Though as I've actually run out of storage space I shall have to start building them. Too bad I only work on one model at once and take, on average, 6 months per model...
>>
>>5829310
>>5829320
>5 new kits per week
>1 kit built every 6 months
>currently at 190 kits
With your current age and some math we could get a good estimate on how many kits you'll complete in your lifetime and how many will be in your backlog when you die. Could help with planning how much space you'll need to store it all
>>
>>5829306
Worse.
Because I am now buying conversion kits before they become rare and even more expensive. Like PG Unicorn dress up kits.
>>
>>5829333

5 kits last week was somewhat of an aberration. That's more normally a monthly figure. Though I haven't ordered anything this month (and I'm trying to keep it that way though the MK Zaku Tank is tempting). Last weeks delivery was an HLJ order.

They're not all gunpla (I would say that they make up somewhere around 40%) the rest are mostly 1/72 and 1/48 scale aircraft with some Sci-Fi stuff, tanks and a few busts and the like thrown in for good measure.

When looking into bending styrene I saw a method with using near-boiling water and submerging the piece there for a bit then bending around a circular object as needed. But trying to bend the styrene around a pen (very thin size, like .10/.20 or so) it undid the bend right after. Is there some tricked thing I'm missing? Do I need to hold it there over a long time with a clip?
>>
>>5829559
A lot of the joints are ABS on ABS, including the waist swivel and hip joints.
>>
>>5829368
Water based acrylics are safe to use indoors. Be sure they're water based and not something like Tamiya.
You can also matte finish something with hand painting. Vallejo, P3, etc are all wonderful water acrylics that go on pretty good but will require practice to perfect a good ratio of paint:thinner for your specific environment as well as putting on a solid layer of paint without brushstrokes.

Almost every brand of hobby water acrylics have their own Matte coats/tarnish/whatever that you can use. Alternatively the classic Future with Tamiya Flat base works.
My only concern for you would be where you would prime. I don't know of any good handbrush primers off the top of my head.

Also a Dehumidifier would be a great way for you to control the moisture level in whatever room you decide to paint in.

You're worried about handpainting acrylics? Most acrylics are safe to drink! (Some contain pigments you don't want to ingest, make sure the can says "non toxic" before you start chugging.) Floor "wax" is a clear acrylic, and you're supposed to cover your entire fucking floor with that. Indoors. The glue will kill you dead long before the acrylics will have any effect on you whatsoever, and even with plastic cement the only precatiouns you really need to take is "don't intentionally huff it".

I'd tell you to off yourself to get the neurotic worrying out of the gene pool, but let's face it, you'd probably try to do it by skiping your vegetables for dinner and expect that to off you overnight.

For the spraying, high humidity will be an issue. Await suitable weather, test on something you don't care about before going over the model(s) you want to coat.

Submerge in boiling water -> wrap around circular thing for curving it -> submerge in cold water?

>You're worried about handpainting acrylics? Most acrylics are safe to drink! (Some contain pigments you don't want to ingest, make sure the can says "non toxic" before you start chugging.) Floor "wax" is a clear acrylic, and you're supposed to cover your entire fucking floor with that. Indoors. The glue will kill you dead long before the acrylics will have any effect on you whatsoever, and even with plastic cement the only precatiouns you really need to take is "don't intentionally huff it".

Floor wax is not acrylic. Only certain floor finishes are and they'll say so in the description.

>what does the Mr. Mark Fitter do?
It softens the decals so they can fit to irregular or round surfaces and not look like ass
it is also advisable to use it on very big decals, such as the ones in the extra leg armors of the HWS hi nu for example

I assembled my first model kit, Wing Gundam Zero, after finding one at Wizard World Comic Con. I don't have a gundam marker or accessible paint, but even without the touchups it looks pretty damn nice.

The fucking ring of red sticker around nosecone shield's cockpit was a nightmare though. Surprised it didn't tear with my shaky hamhands.

another newfriend here, thinking of picking up the 1/144 Sinanju, but the stickers look like a bitch and a half to apply. Is there any trick to stickering stuff right, like using tweezers or another tool, or is it all about patience and having a steady hand?
>>
>>5831235
Nah, just fuck the stickers on Sinanju in general. Reverse wash that shit.
>>
>>5830831
What was your Insta name?
>>
>>5831235
Be patient, for 1/144 I use my hand to remove slightly, then use the exacto blade to help place it

Everyone in the picture looks fake.

It's just an exhibit right

Guys, would anyone here like to see a homebrew combat game based on Gunpla, directly related to the models we build?
I've been making some rules and fleshing a lot of ideas out for a fairly mobile and custom system.
>>

have you looked into using GURPS for this?

i want to make a team CLEARPARTS with

HG transient

does anyone have these kits? are they good?

Portent is great

Its often recommended against but here I'd really recommend matte top coating the clear parts, frosted makes for a better look than clear and the silver stickers work even better, really makes it glow
>>
>>5831296
>green panel lines
i'm really digging that look

it's a matter of personal taste but i'm going to abstain from clear coating the clear parts. did it (on accident) on my 00 7 sword and wasn't happy with the results.

thanks for the reply, really tempted to buy the kits now even though my other order hasn't even come in yet.

Putting a little silver glitter glue under the clear parts and leaving them uncoated or glossed looks better. Gives it that plavsky particle look.

kits made to be feel cheap, and oh boy does it show. look at the legs in that pic. they're hollow from behind.

bunch of other shortcuts and blatant omissions like that, but hey if kids like them then that's what's important.
>>
>>5831327
A newer line of cheap SD aimed at the foreign market initially. They had more dynamic proportions and surface detail and some nice articulation for an sd, but they had big gaping hollow parts that outright obliterate detail instead of working around them, sub par part separation resulting in stickerfests, are outright allergic to clear parts even on kits that need it, and exclude any of the gundams gimmicks in favor of this crappy looking "combine random parts to form a clusterfuck weapon and give it to your hg" thing.

The line is just all around a disappointment compared to BB kits which are only a couple dollars more.
>>
>>5831282
I did actually, but I dont like the fit and would rather build something else out from scratch
>>
>>5831334
Are they replacing the BB line with them or are they just "the cheapest shit you can buy" line of gunpla next to the rest?

Bb and legend lines are continuing, it just looks like they went for an easy mold reuse on barbatos.

I'm hoping they make a BB rebake or a legends version of them. The fan customs look fantastic.

I'm not the one that made it, though its the closest thing i can find as an example of a possible rg EZ8. I'd prefer if they did it more like the RG MK II.

Found a great way to tighten up ABS on ABS peg (swivel) joints. Just put a piece of that rubbery electric tape over the end of the peg and push it in. Nice and tight. Of course, it's only been a day. Guess we'll see how long it lasts.

Just made my first Gunpla ever, just chose the cheapest one from Barnes&Noble down the street for $15.. I know I could've gotten a cheaper one online but I didn't feel like waiting on shipping for a hobby I don't know if I'd enjoy, but I did!

Can't read moonspeak but the box says it's a Kimaris or something... Anyways, I haven't sanded any nibs yet, or painted or anything, but I was wondering if anyone here has any custom paints for this guy to give me an idea for my first paint job.. I have some craft paints
gf works in Michaels so 5-finger discount
and like one or two enamel colors...and I'm using only an x-acto knife to cut shit

Anyways, feedback would be enjoyed :) maybe what model I should move on to next? I kinda either wanted to do HG Grimgerde or RG MSN-06S Sinanju
he's expensive but I think he's pretty!
>>
>>5831926
>feedback would be enjoyed

you didnt do anything though
>>
>>5831926
Good job! Anymore pictures?
>>
>>5831926
Get a hobby knife and some high-grit sandpaper (Like 1000 grit) and remove those nubs before anything else.

Give the guide a read through or at least skim it.

You can use kraft paints for small detail touch ups, but if you plan to paint larger areas get a hobby paint of some sort. They are finer and have more vibrant colors.
>>
>>5831698
That tacky electric tape is literally Satan's design.
It should work alright though. At worst, you'll end up with a load of sticky residue when you try to remove the joint.

Well... maybe not feedback as in critique on the job I did, but more feedback as in, like I guess, where should I go? Did I chose a bad model and should be looking forward to much better gundams? or is this a good quality HG and some others I might chose could be much worse than this
>>5831939
Yeah, one more, same pose on mine, but my girlfriend made one too and added the lance to hers, which makes it not want to stand up very well! nor does his arm want to be in any position other than on his side because of it's weight, but I got it to stay for a moment just for a photo
>>5831943
yeah, I was gonna get the nubs before anything, I've read up on tutorials and videos on youtube and whatnot before even buying, my local card shop has some Citadel paints that they told me were really good for models, it's just a lot of the models on the guides, I don't really like... like I said, Grimgerde, Sinanju or Wing Gundam (MG) are what I wanna do, but no one really recommends them from what I've seen
>>
>>5831953
whoa that image size, I'm super sorry guys I'll work on that on any future images I post... They're coming straight from my android
