For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name of the MS on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

I made an offhand comment to my dad about how I accidentally bought the wrong kind of paint meant for airbrush and he said that he actually does have an airbrush. Neither one of us knows what brush it is or anything because we were not at his house. I'm excited but at the same time it is probably made for models, does that matter?

I would suggest recasting and tinting the resin instead.

1/100 ng graze custom/ground type. Comes with parts for the custom, ground type, technically the normal type if you mix and match, and even the bazooka shoulders.

Unfortunately there is no 1/144 hg.

Strong contender for best kit of 2016 in my opinion.

I'm hand painting priming with Vallejo Surface Primer, pic related, and it just feels way too fucking thin. There are bubbles and shit on the plastic when I brush it on and it pools down to the bottom. I've read up but everyone has said nothing but that it's great primer. What am I doing wrong?
>>
>>5819254
the black is perfect in my experience, but the white can be a bit thin, but i believe it shrinks when it dries so you're supposed to slather that shit on
>>
>>5819254
>>5819254
That's funny, I have heard nothing but bad review of their primer. Paints are amazing, their primer is terrible. You should be priming with Tamiya.
>>
>>5819254

>>
>>5819267

Just found out that the UK is having a gundam convention in a few months time.
Are they fucking serious with these prices?
20 quid to enter a build comp on TOP of the entry fee?
>>
>>5819281

vallejo primer is garbage. However the same recipe that makes vallejo model & game colour airbrush well fixes that.

vallejo homebrew acrylic thinner:

1 part flow medium
1 part acrylic paint retarder
3 parts isopropyl alcahol (purer the better)
5 parts distilled water

mix up a big bottle, thin it with that.
>>
>>5819292
>Are they fucking serious with these prices?
No, they are trying to ruse you.
>>
>>5819299
Check out the website, there is literally nothing happening to justify that price.
https://g-con.uk/
>>
>>5819295
Wow, thanks a lot anon.

What should be my primer:thinner ratio?

And do the normal acrylic paints need to be thinned too, or are they fine as they are?
>>
>>5819311
I don't understand why people ask for thinning ratios. Take some paint, add some thinner, get a plastic spoon, test it out. If it's too thick, add some more thinner. Too thin, add some more paint. It's that simple.
>>
>>5819321
Well.. I guess that works too.

I'm still pretty new to painting though so I'm just afraid I won't be able to tell what's considered too thick or too thin, unless it's so drastically thick or thin that it's just completely obvious.
>>
>>5819326
Just test painting some spoons and you'll get a better idea of it after a few coats
>>
>>5819330
Alright, thanks for the advice.
>>
So I don't paint that often but my airbrushing is pretty average. However, I'm about to start on painting some Frame Arms white/orange, mainly using Tamiya paints.
My question is: should I prime everything white and only airbrush the orange parts, or should I prime everything grey and airbrush white and orange? Is there a great texture difference between Tamiya primer sprays and airbrushed paint?
>>
>>5819267
You can for small surfaces. It won't look good on large surface since the brushstrokes will be obvious.

I tried vallejo once. It was terrible.

>>5819281
Most of them aren't meant for handbrushing.

>>5819292
Don't bother and go have a nice dinner.

>>5819333
Prime white so the underlying color don't bleed through. Grey primer will dull the white and orange but if that's the effect you want go ahead.

A properly applied primer layer should be smooth regardless of airbrush or cans.
>>
>>5819292
The first prize has a value of several thousand dollars. That's why you have a 20 quid entry fee.
>>
>>5819374
Isn't it supposed to be a trip to japan or something?
>>
>>5819374
you mean the trip to japan?
you DO know it doesnt cost "several thousands of dollars" to get from the UK to japan, right?
>>
>>5819382

You do know that lodging, airfair, and food together will probably bring that trip close to $3000 right?

Unless they aren't covering food and they would be putting the winner up in a really poor quality air bnb, or a hotel in the middle of nowhere.

You can't argue that even at a most basic level that that isn't a rather extravagent and costly prize for a model competition.
>>
>>5819382
Usually, when win a "trip" it covers at an absolute bare minimum the travel and lodging expenses. It's not just the flight.

A halfway decent hotel in tokyo can add up really fast.
>>
>>5819333
Just prime everything white and you'll save your self a TON of hell.
>>
>>5817624
>>5817644
Color dye + hot water to recolor plastic is something the mechanical keyboard crowd does with PBT and ABS keycaps.

I wouldn't probably suggest it for plastics that aren't ABS, sorry.
>>
>>5819471
Dying only works well on light plastic.
>>
>>5819475
That too. They only tend to dye white/grey/beige keycaps for color changes.

The other way is to have pigments/dyes that they mix into liquid resin for the color they want, see artisan keycaps. They've done colors of various hues, intensities and multi-color keycaps (see "double shot"), up to and including combinations of opaque/translucent/frosted and/or metallics.

There are some artisan keycaps, where they were pretty good at working with resin that they can make keycaps of character faces/heads with translucent eyes that light up from the keyboard's LEDs.

What's wrong with Vallejo primer? This was done with their acrylic primer as the colour coat and I've had no problems.
>>
>>5819692
That's one angry chest.
>>
>>5819697
Since it's acrylic based it doesn't bond as strongly to the plastic as other types of primer would, and any subsequent coat of paint is then more prone to being scratched off. This is a lot more important to gundams and mecha, since they have many points of articulation, than to other types of plastic models, such as AFVs and planes, which typically have a lot less moving parts.
>>
>>5819763
Acrylic polyurethane
Do keep in mind that I take these out and stuff them in by bag during daily use. The centre piece is an aluminium plate and the outer section is plastic. I've had more problems with solvent based primers in the past (especially modeling focused ones) than with polyurethane
>>
>>5819766
Hey, if it works for you, then it works. All I know is that people have had problems with vallejo primer peeling and scratching off. I've never tried it myself, so maybe those people are just incompetent

Yeah, I'm in Roswell. I know of nothing on the East end around Stone Mountain, buuuutt.....
Kennesaw Hobbytown USA: Largest Hobbytown location in the nation, good selection
Duluth Hobbytown USA: closer to Stone Mountain, okay selection
Galaxy Quest Comics: about 20 minutes north of the Duluth Hobbytown on a low-traffic day, selection size about the same as the Duluth Hobbytown but they might have some good options (still half-regretting not picking up that MP Bawoo when I was up there the other weekend)
If you trek all the way out to the Kennesaw Hobbytown, also maybe stop by NicoNico in Town Center Mall, though they'll likely mostly be Seed HGs.
And if you really want to field-trip yourself, there's Anime-Zing Escape all the way down in McDonough. I've never been in the store myself (because all the way down in McDonough) but they have enough overall stock of all kinds to have a full vending set-up at the two major anime cons out here.

by the time you finish char's counterattack you should go for a sazabi, it's the best mobile suit in the entire series, nothing even competes. Any ZZ Gundam HG kit should be fine, I personally have never seen any problems with any kits involving mobile suits used by protagonists, they put in some extra effort I would think since they are the most popular. Also Gundam kits from universal century series up to char's counter attack tend to be good for new people since they don't have too much crazy shit particularly lots of the later wing designs can be a littler tricky to do for someone new among other things, a zaku 2 for instance is the perfect thing to start with do to it's rather simple design, just about any HG from char's counter attack and before are good to start with.

Actually it looks like this under the armor. The rebake was primarily made by combining spare parts from barbatos, graze, and repurposing parts of the original armor with the coloring being that pale brown because the nano-laminate coating came from the hyakuri.

Not exactly, no. They take the exclusive thing seriously and iirc there's some legal thing that prevents them from releasing it as a regular release if it was marketed and originally released as a exclusive release.

However there is absolutely nothing preventing them from recoloring or tossing in a new weapon and releasing it as a new version as a regular release.

Tonighted I decided that before I go all out with painting I should do a quick test of the colors I wanted to try and the new paint for the frame on a crappy test kit first

The colorscheme is ripped from the Frame Arms (the non-FAG one) Gourai color guide, but slightly tweaked for a little more brown and with tamiya instead of mr.color. the frame was done with Alclad Magnesium. I basically speed painted it all within like an hour to an hour and a half using lacquer thinner, gave it an hour to dry, and then threw on a quick flat coat.

Overall I'm glad I tested it. For the most part I like it, but I need to use less white for the highlight as it faded the color more than I wanted, especially on the black-brown. The magnesium worked well though and has a nice dull metallic sheen.

I think this is going to look great on my graze.

I want to know. I want to know what it thinks. I want to know what levels of insanity you'd have to plunge into to dedicate your life to a task as mundane and repetitive as this. I assume its not a bot or a program, but an actual person with thought, conscious that sits behind their screen of their monitor, with motivation and drive to complete this task. Are they human? Are they capable of other tasks, perhaps more complex in nature? Have they ever interacted with the outside world? Have they ever communicated with another human?

It's a perplexing yet terrifying insight into the deepest levels of psychological hell and awe that a human can attain. Layers upon layers to untangle and understand, yet in the end there is nothing to understand. Sanity and insanity, both merge into a primordial soup of dismay and lunacy.

They say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. But what about doing the same thing over and over only expecting the same result over and over? Is that sanity? What is it?

Pointed out some of the organiser's hypocrisies.

Most notably by posting a picture (from this thread in fact) of the back of Chilly Nippon's van from LCC. Where they had a PG Unicorn, painted and such which had been donated to them for the show to display, just chucked in a box. I asked if this was how we could expect them to treat stuff that was lent to them for G-Con (as they were begging for built kits at the time) and Shane went full tinfoil hat on me. He accused me of breaking in to there van and various other things, which I hadn't obviously as it wasn't my photo; and regardless the van was clearly being loaded up at the end of the con and was left open on the street. But that's beside the point.

I used to work as an events manager, for my sins, and I offered him some assistance with the event as it was (and is) clear that he was floundering and received nothing but a curt rebuttal. I believe Richigo also offered to make some trophies for the comp and he went off on one at him too.

Also, it would seem that the only reason they even announced that the con was delayed was because I and some others forced their hand by pointing out the lack of updates and info. Not that that's changed their practices because the G-Con website is still pic related as he's too busy pretending to book orchestras for symphonic renditions of the mostly pretty poor music from the various series.

>>
>>5822509
Yeah, that doesn't sound like you did anything wrong.

Just like that guy who made Clem and Thosegundamguys all pissed off for pointing out that they fucked up at SCGMC.

There's something about people who run gunpla events being pretty much the worst people to do it.
>>
>>5822578

I think there's just something about small-business people in the hobby industry generally. If you criticise them in any way they blow their lid and accuse you of 'trying to hurt their business and their family'.

No mate. YOU did that when you did 'X'. I'm just pointing it out.

They love to blame others for their fuck-ups and act the victim all the time...a bit like the Japanese in that respect. So in this instance Shane's in the right job (though I believe he himself is Malay-Chinese, and they're a whole other bunch of cunts).
>>
>>5822578

>Just like that guy who made Clem and Thosegundamguys all pissed off for pointing out that they fucked up at SCGMC.

Whassat then?
>>
>>5822614
Besides the fact that they themselves enter the contests they're also judging, they fucked up and awarded one of the prizes to the wrong entry. Instead of contacting the two people involved (The guy who won it by mistake and the guy who should have won) they made an announcement on their own page first. The two people only even heard about by seeing comments on it from unrelated sites and when the lack of contact was brought up they apparently went full nutjob over it.

Or at least that's how I remember it.
>>
>>5822614
From what I recall, last year at their southern california gundam model competition they totally fucked up and apparently called the winners wrong in a lot of categories completely. They then made an announcement about it really quietly on one of their personal blogs and didn't make an effort to tell any of the people who were affected. One of those people, who posts here and is the guy who does the canofbeams customs, told them that not telling people about it and just waiting for them to stumble on it was a really poor way to handle that and Clem, one of the guys from that group, blew up like a child about it.

I went back and found the blowup on their thosegundamguys facebook page after I first read about it. Clem got really pissed off really fast.
>>
>>5822509
I just took a look at their website, they have updated it in the sense they've added a date and location. Every section on the activities is vacant though, no mention of guests attending, no panellists, no vendors. Is this just going to be a room with some tables and Shane's stall?

The only reason I'm attending is to win the UK's first Gunpla contest, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to handle the cringe if it turns out to be dashcon, I know I said I'd get footage but I'm not sure if my body can physically withstand that kind of concentrated cringe without appropriate shielding.

reasonably solid in most places, notable that the torso needs the outer armour to assemble solidly and you need to put outer armour on in order to get hands.

The problem with that logic is a lot of people HATE the trashbags(myself included) and won't use them.

it's just not on the same tier as Amuro's last ms or most of the classic stuff which is almost universally popular with people since everyone has seen them. Also that thing has so many external accessories I can see why they cut corners on the internal frame.

those shiny bits painted or do they include metallic parts nowadays?
>>
>>5823142
I didn't have a 1/100 RX-78, although I am tempted to get the red warrior and the origin.

I'm actually liking it so far, i'm very disappointed to tell you all that the trash bags aren't optional, the bicep armour doesn't fit tightly to the frame and is just floating there, the trash bags will give the armour the thickness for the bicep armour to fit snugly.

>>5823204
An MG costs 3-4 times more than the average HG kit and comes with double the plastic and detail in most cases, for what this lacks in frame it more than makes up for it in armour and weapon detailing. Also the time investment is just as significant if you're painting instead of snapping.

Yeah, for a modern frame the Graze is pretty decent. There's a fair amount of stuff to pick out with paint if you feel so inclined.

To be really honest, I feel like Bandai started moving away from frame detail because it serves such a niche market in their overall group of buyers. I know only a handful of people who fully detail and display their frames, and they're the super high level guys. Most of my gunpla building friends disregard the frame entirely. And I gotta admit, even when I built my first MG I felt really underwhelmed when it was done. I felt like all that great detail was hidden away and the finished product ended up looking very smooth and simple. It was kind of a letdown.

Hand painting is zen. Airbrush is babby mode.

You can get good results from hand painting but a good hand painting is subpar compared to good airbrushing.
