Where does the "Fate/Apocalypse World/etc isn't a game, doesn't have rules" meme come from?

I see it posted around here, occasionally nonironically, but I've never seen it actually explained.

Is it just because those people are incapable of understanding that rules aren't meant to be a 1-to-1 representation of the physics of the game world?

No, it's because pretentious games like Fate and Apocalypse World are garbage killing the industry.

If you want to tell a story, light a campfire and tell one. Don't call your barely cohesive "rules" a game when it isn't.

OK, see, you still didn't explain anything, you just repeated a meme

They just do not stack up to a fighter, cleric, or druid. And are a melee that cannot be used as a frontline combatant. This seems strange.

So what needs to change for a monk to be as good?

Why can't they use swords?

Some of the best wuxia fighters used swords.

Just adapt a rapier or something and make it Dex based, then just call it a jian.

D&D 4e's monk is pretty solid, if I remember right. Someone described them as a 'pinball of death' since they move around and hit everything. Decent defenses for a striker.

So today I sat down to run my weekly game of D&D at a local store. I was a little light on players so I accepted new ones who just walked in. One of them was a child with their mother, who then left and came back when the game was scheduled to be done. The kid seems to have either autism, or ADHD, or some other kind of learning, or behavioral disability. I actually already have a player with autism in my group, but he isn't a problem at all, he's one of my best players.

Explaining the game's scenario was most likely 5 minutes of explanation, and 15 minutes of trying to get him to listen, and not talk about a phone game, or Fallout.

Character creation was most likely 15 minutes of actually creating the character, and 30 minutes of bringing up the same phone game, or Fallout, or asking how to craft potions, or how to craft super +10 armor, or how to craft flame arrows, or how to craft poison arrows, or how to craft a million individual things.

I had to skip buying equipment at that time because I had a group of people sitting around talking for about an hour.

Throughout the game he seemed to be unsatisfied unless the focus was purely on him. He even said "It's my turn." after about 5 minutes of focusing on the other 4 players was too long.

I'm fine with kids, I'm fine with autistic people. Perhaps I have a problem when it's both. I don't want to let people down, and kick literal kids out, but I also have to want to run the game, or I wouldn't be able to do it at all. For all I know this is the only peace and quiet his 50 or so year old mother gets in life.

What if your take on it, /tg/? I almost never deal with players in an indirect fashion, but I kind of want to put up a retroactive 'No one under the age of 18.' rule as a crock of shit just to tell him I want him to go without saying that there's a tangible problem with who he is.

About how old is he, This would be a difficult situation for me, I run a home game so I rarely have that kind of problem but I could definitely see it happening at store run games.

Its possible that the problem might sort itself out, If your lucky he might either learn to enjoy the game how it is, or get bored of it (and perhaps try it again when he is more mature)
>>
>>48497376
dude its your own spare time. Unless that mom is paying you tell the kid to fuck off. You are under no obligation to baby sit.

You dont need rules you need some self respect. If you dont like someone, or dont like a situation, or if anything makes you unhappy do something about it yourself. You could:
1) fight it
2) discuss it
3) walk away from it
4) zillions of options

You choice to bitch about it after the fact on an image board, which is an option.. just a very poor one.

>that akward momemnt when trying to be a good decent human being backfires horribly.

I've been on the recieving end a couple of times with that feel. You be nice to someone that seems like their getting shit on by life to be nice, and then you have a horribly annoying/uncomfortable relationships that's hard to cut off because you don't want to be a dick.

The only solution I've found is a firm "sorry I don't want to hang out anymore". You can't live through life and be happy AND never step on any toes.

I mean theres some times where I'd just advise dealing with it. When I was a kid playing baseball I was the only friend of an autistic kid on our team and I remember the father thanking me after the season was over, he understood the situation, and since I knew it was only temporary for that season, being nice is fine during that time.

Yes, we're still going edition.

What is the World Ends With You?
It's a strikingly original Square Enix action RPG from 2008 for the Nintendo DS about trust, collective consciousness, desperation, imagination and fabulous outfits. Characters are swept into the Underground, a parallel dimension linked to major urban centers, where they run through a 7-day gauntlet of tasks and trials by higher-plane beings called Reapers. Band together and win the Reapers' Game and you have a shot at returning to the Real World. Fail, and you face erasure.

>What is this?
This is a /tg/ Homebrew RPG based on the above game. It's designed to be fast, simple and exciting, and it adapts virtually all of the mechanics from the source game to a form optimized for a tabletop experience. Most importantly, we've striven to preserve its core themes of cooperation, psychic powers and elaborate fashions.

>What system are you using?
We've adapted the core resolution mechanic from another Tabletop game Tenra Bansho Zero into our system. Roll a pool of dice based on your Stats, and count each die that's under your Skill or Psych as a success. It's fast, easy and dynamic. Characters only have four Stats based on your strength of will and mental condition, and only 9 Skills; mixing and matching Stats with Skills creates unique actions, such as rolling Protect:Rhythm to block a punch or Protect:Flow to dodge out of the way.

To flesh out your character, you come-up with free-form Tags like "The Gambler"or "Street Smarts" which describe unique elements of your character's personality and background which fills in the gaps in your Skills. Altogether, character creation takes all of five minutes.

Combat is fast and emphasizes cooperation. Players fight as a team, sharing their a common pool of HP and passing buffs to one another so that a different Player gets to the the superstar of each Round. Range is abstract, numbers are small and the action is lightning quick.

>What have you done so far?
Here's our main document, which contains all of our ideas recorded en masse. We're currently in the process of transcribing this into a properly composed PDF.

There are several supplementary files in the Google Doc, including character sheets and some appendices for Psychs (combat powers), Threads (clothing that grant abilities) and Noise (monsters).

>What's on the Agenda?
As said, we've got the basic mechanics down pretty solidly so we've got three main needs right now:

>1. Playtest
We're looking for anyone who's interested in helping to playtest at least the combat mechanics so we can know if we're on the right track or not. We've got the rules hammered out, basic character powers drawn up and simple monsters prepped, so now it's all about finding willing testers.

>2. Consolidation
As we said, we're starting to work on putting together the first draft of the rulebook. you can see our progress here:
Which contains our Dice Mechanics and Character Building. Most of this is being compiled by poster Rhythm+Flow, based on the Google Doc.

>What we need
Fluff pages for the front of the book and between each section of the rulebook.

As mentioned before, we gotta get some playtesters in here.

>3. More, more more!
We're still adding more to our collection of stat-ed out Pins here:
And we're still building more Noise to kill and discussing the finer points of interacting with the world. If you've got input, or even if you just like the game, we're looking for all the input and feedback we can get. May God have mercy on our souls.

I'm going to gencon this year like every other year, rather than cosplay I just wear a tshirt that represents my favorite game or character or whatever. inevitably, though, I get fools shouting at me as they walk by with some comment about my shirt.

it's funny when it happens, but gets tiresome.

anyway, this year I'm going to buy a white tshirt and on that tshirt I want to write the most inflammatory phrase possible. something that cuts deep and will be impossible to resist for anyone who wants to prove their "nerd cred" at a tabletop gaming convention

what should that phrase be, /tg/?

Its a long running joke from our very first campaign.

We were in a town called boomshackles. Strongest drink was Boomshackle Boomshine. Its now in every campaign since, regardless of time, setting, ect.
>>
In my setting there is an island filled with criminals which were all freed after the guards were moved to the mainland for BBEG related reasons.
Anyway there is a tavern on this island in which the strongest drink is made. It all started when the tolerance of the inhabitants began to outpace the alcohol content of the beer. The people were completely unable to get wasted, even though what they were drinking would deck a normal man. But these were the crustiest, saltiest men on the planet.
Anyway, the native elves attempted to poison the water supply of the the convicts, which the elves interpreted as being the tavern.
After the bartender beat the fuck out of the offending elves he promised to clean out the supply later.
But he forgot and the next day her served up his usual customers his usual beer but before he could take it back the man downed it. And promptly fell off his stool. The bartender thought he had died instantly but really he was just off his ass. The elf poison had been just the thing to make the most heinously powerful beer of all time, completely and utterly lethal to any mere mortal but not these men.

I never got around to naming it though.

What are your gaming sins and secrets? Share them. We won't tell anyone.

I'll start.

When I play, my characters often give long inspired speeches. All of them are just Disney or metal songs translated into my language. Last time my character gave a speech before his army in preparation for a full-scale rebellion. It was "Be Prepared" from Lion King.

When I GM, my games are often based on retro songs, in a twisted way, though. My last cyberpunk-ish one-shot is based on Cara Mia by Baccara.

Questor share tip: Buy Games Workshop as company leverages fantasy brands
Peter Spence
26 July 2016 • 7:09pm

Games Workshop

465¼p +9¼p

Questor says BUY

Investors looking for an attractive yield and a company well placed to benefit from the pound’s steep falls could do worse than Games Workshop, a business that Questor feels has been overlooked.
Cheap and cheerful

After a troubling end to 2015, revenues at the tabletop games maker have recovered, and the stock appears reasonably cheap, at a price-to-earnings multiple at just 11.2. Coupled with strong cash generation and healthy overseas sales, Games Workshop is an enticing, if risky play.

The company has pumped out figurines to a hardcore audience since its formation in the 1970s, providing the parts for customers to assemble and paint their own armies. Yet despite the high-tech alternatives now available, the firm’s fans have remained loyal.

Valued at just £150m, the company receives scant analyst coverage. Only house broker Peel Hunt currently holds a rating on the stock. Its “Buy” recommendation was reiterated after Games Workshop’s annual results on Tuesday, citing their expectation for a chunky 7.5pc dividend yield over the next two years.

Brexit boon

Recent falls in the pound will make the Nottingham-based company more competitive, as it makes 72pc of its sales overseas and has a domestically focused cost base. A weaker pound could boost profits beyond the expectation-busting £16.9m achieved in the year to May 29.

Games Workshop said that it is particularly sensitive to the US dollar, against which sterling has dropped 10.9pc since the start of the year, and also the euro, compared with which the pound is 11.8pc cheaper over the same period.

You also get to be a serious spellcaster without having to be all bookish, or making a contract with a demon, or be just super special born with it.
Instead you're the shaman, the man who takes the form of beasts, the walker of wild places, who knows the language of beasts and trees and all their names.

And of course, a healthy sprinkling of "it's cool and players want to do it, so let's put it in our game.", as with literally everything else.
