*notices ur lack of invitation* OwO what's this???
So fantasy races are not different species. That's why they're called "races", though "subspecies" is more accurate, and is a formal classification, unlike "race".
They're not separate species because they can reproduce viable and fertile offspring, such as a half-elf or a half-dwarf. If, in your setting, they cannot do this, they are different species.
So how did these different races arise? Evolution caused by geographical isolation? Magic?
Also, what in your setting indicates this biological history? Are there books in the setting equivalent of Latin, peer-reviewed studies, et cetera? Universities dedicated to biology?
And one last question, if your setting is one of the few in which the typical fantasy races are actual different species, what explanation is given for their biological history?
>>50119212
>They're not separate species because they can reproduce viable and fertile offspring,
Hybrid fishes (especially cichlids and stuff) are occasionally fertile and can create new, stable species
>>50119212
>if your setting is one of the few in which the typical fantasy races are actual different species, what explanation is given for their biological history?
God did it.
>>50119212
Hybrids can and often exist between species. Species classification can exist due to geographic barriers, though through research this later (usually) becomes reduced to subsp. distinctions.
How do you build an original culture from scratch?
Pic unrelated.
You have to know the environment and origins of the culture.

There's no need for that kind of bait in here.
My friends and I just started playing Legacy Pokemon TCG. We are only playing Base Set, Jungle and Fossil. We decided not to include Team Rocket for a few reasons, I think the big one was Dark Vileplum and Dark Blastdoise but I'm not sure.
Anyway, have any of you played this format at all? Finding decklists and stuff online was kind of a pain so I went for some janky shitty toolbox Eevee build with Dragonites, Dittos and a Mr. Mime.
Regardless, I'm interested to hear if any of you have played this and have any stories or cool builds and tech choices.
>Legacy TCG
Probably would focus on Night March with itens that were supporters in the past.
That's called block.
You are better of looking for decklists from the Game Boy Color game.
It uses the same cardpool.
>>50116906
My friend and I play Pokemon Highlander.
100 card singleton (except for basic energy) No ban list (haven't tested enough to find anything) but closest thing so far would be Jungle Clefable because of Metronome.
Its actually fantastically fun, just gotta remember errata (such as Bill being a Supporter, Computer Search/Itemfinder Ace Spec)
The other thing is it is Trainer heavy. Oak, Juniper, and Sycamore are staples. Still, lots of fun if you have a big pool of old and new cards to draw from
I've seen plenty of "That Guy" stories around here, stories of terrible players and GM's but I think we need some balance around here.
For the purposes of cheering ourselves up and reminding ourselves of why we play these games I ask you to post the best: Players, Player Characters, NPC's, BBEG's, ETC.

Ouch. I'd say the hard core of three players in my group who stick with me through thick and thin no matter how many flakes go through slots 4&5. I feel bad because the game I run isn't all that really and I don't deserve the loyalty.

Sounds like you just have some good friends man :^)

>Good Players
Absolutely best player I ever had was also the first player to ever join a game of mine. We were both very green and he had a hard time understanding that TTRPGs aren't like vidya, even seemed annoyed at people that wanted to RP. Two months later, he had one of the best characters and I still invite him from time to time in any of the online tables I organise.
>Good GMs
My last SWN GM was the best GM I've seen. Period.
He had an entire sector ready, every planet having its own feel and backstory, the various factions felt different and when they openly clashed it was a big deal, all of our characters had arcs going for them, our backstories always came into play, it was amazing. But unfortunately he commited the cardinal sin of TTRPGs; he made the gamefun.
All right guys as the title suggest i need to prepare a tournament that many NPCs and a few PCs will fight in.
Now a little of the back story its in changeling the lost, and its to decide the new lord of summer. This happens every year.
Now my question is how do i set it up i have tons of ideas for fighters of all kinds but what should the rules be,
how is a tournament set up, and should i change the combat so its not one on one roll off to see who wins for the players.
>>50116288
Im not very into changeling but... this gives me the sansation of the fight between Merlin and Madam Mim

>Freeze - 1 mana - 1d4 damage and slows target for 1 round
>High Freeze - 2 mana - 1d6 damage and slows target for 2 rounds
>Grand Freeze - 3 mana - 1d8 damage and slows target for 3 rounds
How do you feel about this sort of design? Like it? Hate it? Don't mind?
>>50116128
Easier to balance around, harder to make it interesting.
The main problem is that spells aren't interesting because of how much damage they do to enemies, but how they can be used utility-wise.
If you want a fun, "freeform" game about stretching the limits of your powers and clever solutions to problems using spells - don't do it.
If you want a fun, "videogame-y/wargame-y" game about tactical engagements and careful planning - do it.
Boring.
I've been trying to make a more freeform casting system, here's what I've put down. This is for a more rules light game, so it shouldn't exhaustive.
>You manipulate the six elements (fire, water, earth, air, light and dark), but can only cast your most powerful spells by spending MP. 0 MP cantrips produce minor effects like a magic torch or elemental rays from your staff, whereas 5 MP spells create major effects like summoning a meteor or changing the weather. In the case of damaging spells, each MP spent adds +1 damage.
What do you think? I've thought about adding cast times or difficulty modifiers, but I'm not sure. Characters gain and spend MP easily over the course of a scene (instead of having a pool that wears down over the course of a scene), but their cap is equal to their level, and their level is subtracted from the TN anyway.
I worry that adding cast time will make playing a wizard boring and be difficult to track, and adding spell level to the TN would be moot because it will just be subtracted anyway.
The party enters a small village controlled by a local lord. It seems normal at first, but slowly the party realizes that everyone is wearing the color red, and when asked why they become skittery and change the subject or leave. Why?

Imagine a man. He was born in a virtuous and happy family. He was taught what is right and what is wrong when he was raised. He can distinguish good from evil, he knows everything that is required to be a good person.
And yet, this man is evil. Deep inside, he can feel only joy if he were to do evil deeds, he would suffer no guilt or shame if he started sinning.
But this man is well aware of this. He knows that this is wrong. And so he puts on a facade, faking good nature. He helps grandmas to cross the roads, he saves cats stuck on the trees, despite feeling nothing but hate when he does this, as he only can feel happiness through suffering of others. This man even becomes a paladin and smites evil, saving thousands of lives, never knowing satisfaction. He would fight evil both in the world and inside himself, since his true desire to do evil never goes away and only becomes stronger with time.
If he were to die before he ever breaks and reveals his true self to the world, would this man go to Hell or Heaven?
>>50115611
Heaven.
Alignment is what you do, not what you say or feel.
Heaven.
Just as courage is to fight your fear, not being fearless, to be good is to resist this urges for the greater good.
Nothing good comes from being pure in tought when you don't do shit to improve. This is why sloth is a deadly sin.
>>50115611
He is not an evil man, but a man with evil drives and desires. And for all his life he has fought against them and accomplished good. His goodness is deeper than that of people who do good spontaneously and find solace in it.
Hey guys,
I've been poring over websites for days now regarding this problem and have finally decided to ask here too.
My PCs will soon meet a powerful green dragon. Dragon is young adult and has founded a lair in a decrepid tower in the middle of large forest. He likes the idea to just hunt untill he gets bigger and is able to carve out his own region to rule. Otherwise it is a standard D&D green dragon. (It's Venomfang from Lost mine of Phandelver module)
Now problem is, I see no other ending to this encounter as TPK. I've been reading on characteristics of greens and he might be willing to recieve some new minions. But he is not stupid. He does not trust humans/elves/dwarves. It is highly unlikely he will take PCs under his rulership (Also because party is mostly Good). With that said, dragon does not want some other adventurers to stroll in and try to slay him, because they were first notified by this initial party.
Best course of action here for him seems to be to just annihilate PCs, loot their shit and boil one of PCs skulls and use it as a cup. Eventually some kobolds might stroll along - a reliable cadre that is also trustworthy.
Is there any way to roleplay this dragon without TPK attempt? Warning: Keep in mind, this guy is not stupid. He will not just "hire" adventurers to "bring him some shiny loot".
Only deal he will make is the kind where the party has a shotgun to their heads the whole time.
so ... any comments?
thanks
Why are they meeting this dragon?
What is its purpose in this story?
From the sound of it, you might just be better off with the players not meeting it, if you've decided its personality makes TPK the only possible outcome.
"If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise don't put it there."
If you're still keen on including the dragon, you do still have some options.
If the Dragon is not stupid, give it some other flaws or characteristics. Try something like it being overcautious, or downright paranoid, so that if it sees people in its territory, it has to debate over whether or not they're just trying to distract it from some other group that's aiming to raid its tower. If they attack it and then run, it might head back to its tower rather than pursuing them in order to ensure its integrity. Here, the dragon's main role is being the guardian of the tower, where there might be something so precious as to make its safety the highest priority.
Or, it can have some twisted hobbies, like enjoying gladiatorial combat, so it might imprison them rather than killing them off, giving the PCs a chance to escape. The key idea here is to determine why it would decide not to kill them, and there's a multitude of reasons as to why it might want to keep them alive, including using them in a profane ritual or wanting to torture them for knowledge and information, or simply entertainment. Here, the dragon's main role is simply to imprison the PCs.
If you have an idea for what this dragon is supposed to be for, then we can give you more specific help.
>>50115098
I'll be blunt:
Why are you putting them against an enemy they can't possibly defeat and that won't be interested in any kind of deal they could offer?
You said,
>My PCs will soon meet a powerful green dragon. Dragon is young adult and has founded a lair in a decrepid tower in the middle of large forest.
Soo...
>Is there a reason in your campaign why they should meet him right now, so you're guiding them towards his lair?
(If so, why would you do that with an enemy they can't defeat or deal with? Couldn't you use a weaker dragon instead?)
>Have they found out about this dragon and are specifically looking for him?
In this case, have you given them clues in-game on how much more powerful than them this dragon is? If so, let them go to their deaths if they so chose; otherwise, it's your fault. You can still throw them some MORE OBVIOUS clues (like corpses of fuckstrong monsters littering the forest), or try to throw them some more appealing plot hooks to bait them somewhere else until they're ready to take on a dragon. Or they could just find his lair deserted - maybe the dragon had to take one or two weeks off to go do his dragon stuff somewhere else.
>Are they just going to end up in his territory by chance?
Fuck that. THere is no chance. YOU are chance. If you want to drive them unwittingly in the clutches of an encounter too far beyond their level, a TPK is what you're setting the table for. And you know it. You sick, sick sadist.
>>50115098
>venomfang from lost mine of phandelver
read the module: he runs away if he drops to half hp. they don't have to kill it they have to outlast it
let the party run into it again later when they're stronger and watch them feel good about their progress/growth

As cool as it is, why the fuck would they need Dreads? Wouldn't they be inferior to the actual Custodes in every way?
Guys, sorry but i need to vent a bit.
My while fucking group is SHIT! Lets start describing them
Ranger: he just laught akwardly abou everything. Doesnt even know what to add to the atk roll, and he is just there, no saying nothing, never, doent try not even a bit to be in carácter, when i asked him what spells would he get he didnt even knew rangers got spells
Paladín: lg, of pelor. The only decent player, irl female, i dm'd call of cthulhu for her and other guys and at least she tried to roleplay, doesnt read that much but its forgiven because the former
Druid, ng. The 12 yo brother of the paladin, doesnt read shit, just attack with a crosbow, i had to tell him to summon a fucking wold behind the enemy so we could flank, and i had to tell him too abou the tripp that the wolf doesi( wich the dm obviously forgot)
Wizard: irl female, overly shy and not in a cute way she doesnt even know what her cantrips do, doesnt read shit and takes fucking forever to just say "i think i'll just shoot my crossbow" and misses i THINK she is the gf of the cleric. (School: evocation). I have to tell her to use greasy or color spray because she doesnt even know what they do or the DC
Cleric: LE, evil domain. the only deity he knows is vecna, he SWORE vengeance to a fucking plant that hit him anf we spend like 30 minutes trying to kill it but we coulndt because it was on the ceiling, i told him that we all should try to help the party and he fucking told me "thats not what my haracter would do". Yes guys he did that. He always try to make the wizard evil and to support him in everything, i was thinking that they are a couple because they always come and go together so i asked him on fb, jis answer? "I prefer not to talk about it" like Hes the fucking mc in an anime, his fb. His while fb is full of emogoth pictures and "woe is my, the agony like fire burn my soul" bullshit.
We've been playing for like 4 month, every other sunday and im at lvl 2 and they lvl1...
And then there's you constantly trying to play everyone's characters for them, your clearly not even the DM for Pete's sake. Just let them play the damn game, if you do everything for them they'll never learn the ins and outs. Get them to interact with each other instead of being a sourpuss and complaining about it online.
>>50114368
And the real gem, the dm:
He is a fat fuck that has been playing 10+ years and he loves his undead, he put a fucking serpent that drained 5 points of con to the cleric at lvl 1... he laughs like a hyena when we are hit and is seriously dissapointed when he miss or when we kill something. Because the fucking serpent the cleric had to stay 2 days at full rest to recoger, and no, the fucking priest that we are working for cant Cure him... when i told him i wanted to make s rogue he said it was a good option but then i realized (and he confirmed) that the while campaign is going to be against undead and no, he wont le me take anything that makes me SA undeads, joking i told him that i have to kill my pc then (i wont do that, i want to be at least lvl 6 to try a build im making) his answer? "If you die, you cant play with us again" i didnt said shit because i dont want to make the table more awkward. But from time to time, when hes laughting because there are zombies coming for us, i just say "cmon, bring it, bring a banshee yolo" because at the end i know that these guys would even advance two corridos without me.
Sorry for the long rant guys i really need to get this off my chest im not a perfecto player but at least i try not to be a burden to the other snd be a team player. Sorry too for grammar, english is not my main language and im from my phone
>>50114452
Im not trying to play their characters, but when they are taking 10 min a turn someone needs to gide then because they doesnt even know that there are spells descriptions in the PHB
>Ghent Morcault was eighty-one years old, and despite a small fortune in the best rejuvenating procedures the Imperium could boast, he felt it. He could still get about and his mind was sharp as ever, but he knew his days were near an end

What did the Black Library author mean by this?
I figure he just felt like even after all that he was still going to die soon? Just because his body could still live for tons of years more, he just felt it in him that he wasn't going to last much longer.

It's funny. Every black library book has a big retcon and I knew what this book's retcon was going to be before I even started reading since this event had basically only one thing to retcon.
The 3D printing technology is now above gimmick level, and evolved at a pretty standard rate for a new technology.
In that HYPOTHETICAL future, you can buy a $250, 30watt printer at walmart on black friday, which reliably print 28mm heroic models with a resolution equivalent to standard casting at the rate of one (1) grey 28mm model every hour. (so around 720models/month less if there are problems but you can still remelt the resin and reuse it)
Assuming the price of a good quality resin is twice the today's price of 15Cents a kilo.
Do you still buy GW models ?
Do you use the 3D scanned models/sprue ?
Do you print sprues or directly fully colored assembled models ?
Do you consider that's stealing GW's property ?
lol.
There's already GW 3d files torrenting (mainly Space marines).
As soon as I can print my own models in an equivalent quality, gw will never have a single cent out of me anymore.
I already tried, but the resolution isn't there yet on affordable printers.
Printing Gw's shit without gw having money is a very bright future for 40k fans.
>>50113943
But would you really still bother with miniatures if you had one of these in your basement? Like, one that could print metal, resin or composite parts?
Imagine designing and building your own boat and paying less than the rich kid who visits the authorised shop twice per week. Imagine just picking up a Corvette from the junkyard and restoring and upgrading it with your own parts. Or making your own hunting or fishing gear and only paying for the material. Cheap printing means anyone can have access to past times accesible only to the upper class a minute ago. I mean, you can't print hookers and blow, but you could sure as hell print a Corvette as long as you had an engine block.
>3D printer companies sell printers at a loss
>Sell printer plastic at a premium
>Exactly like the current state of 2D printing.
>Sure I can print out an entire pirated PDF, but the toner/ink and paper costs as much or more than just buying the book.
How would you model the space a weapon takes up as you use it? Swinging a big fuck off axe in a tight corridor or a formation is basically worthless, after all. Is it already spelled out in some system I'm unaware of?

>>50113555
desu you don't need to swing a weapon much, those big open swings are just, i've been doing hema for the last 5 years and when trying the shoulder to shoulder exercises there is no problem on the "giving a punch" aspect of a small swing. Its surprisinly strange how little space you need to put all your force behind a swing
