I'm a jeskai player in modern and i'm wondering what options i have in catch all removal for permanents. Things like creatures are very easy to deal with for me, but cards like liliana of the veil are harder if they resolve. What options do i have other than something like detention sphere?

I have two shops.

The first is the one I've gone to for awhile now, and I always try to buy my singles through him first. The magic crowd is pretty cool save for a few outliers. The YGO crowd is pretty shitty. Hell, the guy who used to run it was fired for stealing, and some other morons broke in and only took a few boxes. The smell you've described is from the YGO people. I can't walk in there on Saturdays. Otherwise, the people there are shockingly normal for the most part.

The second store is a lot more laid back. It's new and so are most of the players. There is a smell policy on the door, and the owner said there were a few offenders that have since been taken care of. The most prominent game is magic, but DnD and board games are popular. It's very chill. However, I have never seen so many stereotypes in one place. You name it, it's there. Still, I enjoy it there.

Yeah, to hit the point home you'd have people who would be totally healthy but would otherwise be disabled in other means such as loosing the use of your legs after taking severe damage.

While you can still move parts of your craft that would associate with your legs, your actual legs are useless as if you became a parapalegic.

How does /tg/ usually go about making names? Are you lazy and just go with a pre-written name from a list in the book, or do you think of your own? How well are you able to make your own OC donut names that work with the setting?

Right now I'm trying to work out a decent name for an upcoming WoD vampire game that isn't pretentiously gothic but not generically modern.

>>50077797
If I'm using an existing name, then its meaning will be directly related to the importance to the character. Usually in a vague way.

When making up fake names a similar formula goes for phonemes. More important characters will have named made of meaningful phonemes, while unimportant ones will just have whatever sounds good.

When you have to name a fuck-load of NPC's, there's no shame in taking the easy route.

>>
>>50077797
Assuming we're not talking about a modern, real-world (or close to it) setting, I find a real-world name I like then change a letter, add a syllaboe, etc.

So, if I like the name Emily (and I do), I'll mold and change it until I might come up with Emberleigh. Kevin might become Kerevin.

Then I do the dick test. my players are dicks and will invariably try to twist names into juvenile jokes. Renci Rosh (from a 3rd party Star Wars adventure) was forever referred to as Rancid Tusch, for example. So I try to predict and avoid that shit when I can.

Alrighty guys, let's mediate for a little while and discuss what would make a RPG system perfect for you. What is something common in games that you'd like to change if you had the power to do so for an upcoming RPG, or perhaps things you would like to see in future systems across the hobby as a whole?

For example, I've always found it is a bit confusing for newer players to comprehend having an ability score (Let's say, 16 str), but going off the modifier for everything instead (that being a +3), rather than just saying your strength is +3, spells like Bull's Strength give you +2 strength instead +4 strength score which equates to a +2 boost in the modifier. Cut out the middleman as it were. On the other hand, it may feel as though it is a dumbing down for people to see just a +3 there, and maybe some people need that measurable 16 = +3 as proof that their character is strong rather than using their imagination. It just seems silly to me and needless number crunching.

I would also like to see the division of spell lists be removed and just have mage class that specializes in different flavors and spells, like one mage is a white mage and heals better than a black mage, but can still blast if needed, just not as well, while the inverse being a black mage can blast better than the white mage any day, but their healing magic is only OK at best. A legitimate complaint would probably be along the lines of "muh caster supremacy" and so forth by allowing all mages to cast any spell, just being better at some than others. Still fiddling around with this concept desu, but I think it might have some merit if the spell casting is "more do things that are otherwise not possible" rather than "do anything and everything, I even have a cantrip to walk my dog", something that is a huge issue in systems like 3.PF, which tend to suffer from spell bloating. But again, still playing around with the concept.

I hate class and level. To me, this wargaming shorthand has no place in an actual rpg., preferring to use point buy to get abilities that support your character concept instead of having to fight the system and min-max expectations to get the character you actually wanted.
Oh, and support in system for non-combat activities to the same degree as combat.

>>50077404
I do like the concept of having point buy for abilities and skills instead of classes. Invest fully in magic if you want to be a traditional wizard at the expense of combat prowess and survivability and whatnot.

I'd be concerned for having more support and rules for non-combat stuff, as then we get stuff like the verbal duels that Pathfinder now has. It might take away from the role-playing.

I'm sure that the manga Dungeon Meshi is pretty popular around here... and I think I'm not alone in wanting to base a character concept off the idea of using monster remains as food items.

That said, while the manga's depiction of things like "roasted basilisk with mana herbs" and "giant scorpion and walking mushroom hot-pot" look absolutely delicious, I'm thinking it might be a bit lazy to steal recipes directly from the manga...

So, does anyone have any clever/creative ideas on what to do with all this perfectly good meat and such left over after fights? (No humanoid-consumption recipes, please!)

>>

It's has been done, over and over. Not to say you shouldn't do it, but you're not exactly treading new ground here.

Do you know how to cook? You really need to understand how to put a meal together in the real world before doing something like this. Sure, I could create a meal using cockatrice meat for you if you wanted, but if you want to last a whole campaign you need to understand what to do with chicken. If you want a shortcut, I HIGHLY recommend a book called The Flavor Bible. It's a giant list of what ingredients go well with what. Just pick whatever real world ingredient you think would be closest the fantasy one you've got and work from there. I almost always reach for it when I want to invent an exotic meal for my players.

Currently playing a LG Mind Flayer Mystic/Fighter Multiclass that is pretending to be a plain-old High Elf Fighter with the help of a Hat of Disguise (and humorously hindered by his Charisma stat of 3). None of the players have caught on to his true nature, but my GM makes my horse specifically dislike him. Sometimes he bucks him off when he uses psychic powers, sometimes he moves away from him when he tries to mount, sometimes he makes some sort of sign that he understands the telepathic messages of genuine friendship the Mind Flayer sends him.

Though it isn't crying, his horse did whinny in joy when he went into a dubious portal where the bad guys were without bringing him along. I am genuinely curious what the DM will make my horse do, especially since he said his horse was the smartest horse out of the party's mounts.

I'm trying to design a solo campaign. This is vaguely terrifying, because it's for my poor, suffering, forever-dm of years, who is amazing. It's kind of an odd setting, partially because I've realized that getting overly ambitious is crippling to me. It's going to take place almost entirely in a church and the immediate surrounding areas, with limits on being able to get too far away. I know my dm is going to accept my metaphorical macaroni painting for their refrigerator even if it has a lot of clumsiness and errors, because I actually worked up the courage to try (and give THEM a chance to be the player), but I'm still wildly anxious over it because seriously, they're incredible. I basically have the luck of the gods as far as knowing them goes. That said, I know that I won't get looked down on for this, but I'm trying to figure out my maps. And I don't know a whole lot about church architecture. What kind of features there are, what things are called, different types of churches. Religious differences in themselves aren't probably going to come up, and it shouldn't be that hard for me to look up anyway. But for example, I've spent a lot of time just trying to figure out if a church might have the dwelling of a priest literally, physically attached to it instead of as a separate building, and if so, what the heck would that be called? I know they don't mind if I straight make things up by accident, like if there's a small kitchen, attic (in some part at least?), or basement, say. It's relevant because they're going to need to try to actually survive here. It's driving me insane.

I don't suppose there's any chance you guys know of any good resources for this? I've been searching around on the internet but I've been having a really hard time finding just... ARCHITECTURE, history of it, and the like. Books would be excellent too, if anyone happens to know of any. Pretty much anything related to this?

Well, for one thing you either haven't looked very hard, or got overwhelmed by the volume, because there's a lot of info out there: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Church_architecture

But, that's a lot of shit, and I happen to know a fair bit about churches and things.

What sort of church were you thinking of, what size?

It's very common to have living quarters on the church property, though the nature will depend on the type, location, and size of church - from small village churches, to cathedrals, to monasteries.
>>
>>50075719
>But for example, I've spent a lot of time just trying to figure out if a church might have the dwelling of a priest literally, physically attached to it instead of as a separate building

More common in Europe than the US (and becoming more rare in the US as you head west), more common in Catholic than Protestant.

>and if so, what the heck would that be called?

Remember how you said religious differences wouldn't come up? Because religious differences. Priory, rectory, parish house, clergy house, parsonage, all are different names for the same kind of structure, depending upon who it belongs to and who it houses.

>a small kitchen

A large number of all churches have a kitchen whether or not they have a residence. The bigger the congregation, the more likely they'll have at least one, if not a large commercial kitchen suitable for feeding [NUMBER OF CONGREGANTS].

If they're Mormons, they have a food stockpile somewhere close.

It's the latter. I'm totally overwhelmed.

I'm not really sure how to describe what kind of size I'm considering, but certainly not anything huge. Probably something small to medium in terms of capacity, but not tiny - searching has surprised me with how small functional churches can actually be. I don't want it to be overwhelming large for a single character to explore - the area of actual worship doesn't need to be particularly imposing. I'm trying to avoid creating a sense of claustrophobia right off the bat, at least just based on size alone. I'd rather that grow over time.

Thank you so much for answering, by the way - I appreciate it a lot. I'll try to give any details I can think of that would be useful, but I'll be the first to admit that my intentions for the structure are still pretty vague - I only started working on this a while ago, and I was focusing more on what kind of game it would be than anything else.

A major element is that the player can leave the church, yes - but they have to return there every night or they're basically screwed. At which point, they really have no real idea what's going on outside. For this purpose, I wanted to have it so that the only windows in the church are stained glass, to make it much harder to make out any details, especially at night.

What is the best version/image of Demogorgon?

I'd just like to first recite Gygax's original description.

>"Demogorgon appears as an 18-foot tall reptilian-humanoid. He has two heads that bear the visages of baboons. His blue-green skin is plated with snake-like scales, his body and legs are those of a giant lizard, his twin necks resemble snakes, and his thick tail is forked. In place of arms, he has two huge tentacles."

Also, as a bit of a challenge to drawfags, I'd love to see your own interpretations of Demogorgon.
