This will be out of the realm of most of you /p/ros though some of you are quite knowledgeable.
I recently went from 120 (6x6) to 4x5 and now need a way to scan the LF film (DSLR scans don't cut it when it comes to the prints I am doing). The closest shop with a drum scanner is 1000km away and the local guy has gotten out of the biz after his machine went down.
I have a guy who is willing to sell me his drum scanner and teach me how to use it.
Locally there would be about 5-10 clients who shoot LF and scan to print, that could potentially help to justify the cost of maintenance and ownership of such a machine.
Is this the stupidest idea ever?
>>2882768
Potentially, yes, if you don't want to stitch shots together.
Do you really wanna deal with running a scanning business just so you can justify an exorbitant splurge?
Got to photograph this beautiful home for a realtor. Left the kitchen for the last shot to take my time and get it right.
So there I was thinking I'm at f/7.1 (should have been at f/8) but my finger must've hit the dial because I was actually at f/6.3, and that was enough to ruin the background sharpness.
I do 360 panoramas with a Ricoh Theta S. I had just balanced it on a tripod when out of nowhere, a gust of wind knocked it over and the Theta landed on its lens, a complete loss. Been one of those days.

Sell all the Nikon stuff to buy a Nikon FE and a 55mm F2.8 for backup if I need fine control that I can't get from the Trip.
I'd be very excited about the 55 1.2, and the 70-200 is probably really nice too. I would think that would be generous of whoever gifted it, even though I would never use either camera, and mostly only one of the lenses.

I have an issue where photos that I have on my phone look really good with intense colors, when viewed on my laptop will look less intense, almost lower contrasted, and a little brighter.
Is this my particular laptop screen? Or is this a function of images on a phone being smaller and thus denser?
How do I make sure that what I'm seeing on my phone is what's seen across everyone's devices?

That's expected, phone screens are often made to appeal to consumers who think that crazy saturation and contrast are visually appealing, and obviously your computer display will have a much more powerful backlight than your phone.
It's the same reason that most TVs and displays in stores are run in Demo modes which crank up all the settings to make the picture "appealing" on a brightly-lit show floor.
To be frank, I never trust the LCD screens on proper cameras either, and only use them to check the histogram or see if I nailed focus. Try to avoid editing or enhancing images directly on the phone and wait until you have them on your computer.
>>2888379
because laptop screens are garbage and phone screens are high end (because you pay so much for a small one)
>>2888410
Explain the OnePlus 3 then. You can get either nice displays on flagship phones or shit ones, and laptop displays can be shit or decent as well, some even have calibrated displays. I don't think it's right to make blanket statements about which is better without knowing what phone and laptop OP has.

Now that ``small size'' is no longer the sole domain of small sensors. APS-C and FF sensor cameras can now be as compact as cameras with compact sensors. ~This kills the MFT~
Besides, there's an ergonomic limit to how small a camera should be. We needn't resort to camera the size of a tiny Minox camera for small sensors to stay relevant.
I think Pentax had an idea in the right direction, but horrible execution. If you can't compete on size, compete on unique styling. So they made the MX-1 compact. Which unfortunately looks like a half-ass MX. Where's the pentaprism?! So they went for unique retro style, but then threw it out the window halfway. They ended up with a product that didn't please any crowd.
They could've made it a compact sensor SLR, that's actually about the same size as the original MX. Usually when companies do retro style, the big sensor forces them to make the bodies HUGE compared to the original designs of old. Autofocus on a lens also adds significant bulk to the lens design. This is where compact sensors got the edge against APS-C and FF. They have smaller lenses even with modern AF design, on account of having normal focal length equivalents at much shorter actual focal lengths and less glass needed to produce a smaller image. For this reason, APS-C and FF will never ever successfully miniaturize their lenses as much as they have with their bodies.
Can you imagine what the MX-1 could've been if it had a TTL optical viewfinder, separate dials for shutter speed, exposure compensation, and ISO? Even with a compact sensor, at this size with a fixed compact zoom, it would've been amazing. Certainly no Fuji mirrorless, but still unique enough to set itself apart. There's so many neat interesting things you can do with compact sensors that would be prohibitive with APS-C and FF.
What are you backseat camera dev ideas?
>What are you backseat camera dev ideas?
I'd make a contax g2 with a full frame sensor that has a better viewfinder that can still use the godly g-mount lenses

>APS-C and FF sensor cameras can now be as compact as cameras with compact sensors.
Gearfags only looking at body size again, I see. It's all about system size. Body size isn't even a consideration until you look at the big magalloy chassis DSLRs.

I've never known what to think about this lens..
A few years ago, I found someone's Leica IIIF setup at my local antique/estate sale shop. I assume the guy died. He was a pilot, as I found some photos of him and his lady from the war near the camera, and a slip stating that he bought the set while based in Japan, presumably. I wound up with an old IIIF body (with a bad curtain), a few lenses that were either bad (the Summacron 50 is well scrached up) or long telephoto lenses that seem awkward on such a small rangefinder. It even came with a large attachment that allows one to look through the lens, though it was dusty and dim. Anyways, the only thing that seemed usable was the Leitz Summaron 35mm 3.5.
I wound up buying a Bessa-R to be able to shoot with it reliably. When I started using it, I noticed right away that it was a real mixed bag. Some of the time I would get a decently clear shot, but other times I had this tremendous haze that cut the contrast so badly that things almost seemed mis-focused. I put the lens down after that for a few years.
In the past year, I have taken an interest in using it again, as I like the portability of RF and way of shooting it entails. I began looking into getting it cleaned...but something has kept me from going through with it... I almost feel like if I have it cleaned, it will lose some of its essence. I recently found a few threads that mention this myth of the "Leica glow", which has gotten me interested in the subject. The strange thing is that this "glow", for me and many others, seems to happen only by chance. I do realize that it gets more distinct the wider open the aperture is, and the longer the shutter speed....but sometimes that doesn't seem to matter at all..
I guess I'm starting this thread to see what anyone else thinks about this subject of the "glow", and if anyone, from looking at the photo's I am going to post, thinks this lens is fucked or not. Feel free to post any "glow" photos of your own.

It's a faggy ephemeral thing that people assign to leica to try to assure other people that they did the right thing by spending so much on camera and lens. Leica is luxury brand with luxury pricing. It doesn't do anything magical and people who tell you otherwise have either drank the kool aid or don't know what they are talking about.

how would would you guys go for a prime you'd be using exclusively in many situations?
pic related, i have a 28mm but i dont like how wide it is. ill probably get a ~50mm soon and stick with that for a while

40mm imo closer to natural focal length than a 50
28mm or 32mm are the only prime you ever need.

I shot a roll of film recently that has developed a weird web like patina. Does anyone know what causes this? It's quite an interesting effect. To be clear this is a blank frame.

Did you wait a long time to develop this? Has this roll ever been in a wet area?
Is this roll expired?
Was this roll inside the air tight capsule or was it laying around?
It's most likely fungus or bacteria
I once had something similar occur, but instead of a web texture, it was a whispy long tailed bacteria thing
Here's a blank shot from that roll

im making progress on a good free demosaic (AHD) for fuji xtrans
Here is an initial try at the interpolation step. Each of these little subimages are results of interpolating using only sensor data from a certain direction. This is only the first part of AHD, next comes a step where at each pixel, the best one is chosen from one of these five candidate images. You notice on the NE/SW SE/NW images, different parts of the caution circle are smooth. There is a way to quantify this smoothness, and that's how you decide which image to choose each pixel from. I still have to implement that part.
After that there is a color smoothing step that I also still have to implement.
This part still needs improvement on a number of things:
> Part of the process involves a naive spatial interpolation to regularize the irregular xtrans data so that we can take an FFT. The interpolation is assumed to only add high frequency noise to the image, bit the interpolator I am using is nearest neighbor bc it's fast and easy, but in real life it adds a ton of HF noise. I should be using some kind of spline fit.
> I might be making some wrong assumptions
Already I think this is going to be worlds better than what Rawtherapee, LightZone and DarkTable already use. Even in these half-baked sample images I'm seeing none of the false color that is present in those other demosaicers.
