Finally making money off photography, but still cant afford a leica (im in college). what similar rangefinder would you guys recommend?
Voigtlander Bessa r's look good, pretty cheap, and can mount leica lenses. Good buy?
>>2886474
I personally prefer Voigtlander rangefinder in frameline offerings and aesthetic, so I am not haunted by the ``what if I had gotten a Leica instead'' feeling.
If you're in it for the Leica lifestyle, maybe you should save up a little more of a decent used M3.
Get the R2 for 35mm framelines, R3 for 40mm framelines.
The shutter's a little noisier but they're superior in every way. If you're poor, you're probably only going to be able to afford an M4 or M6, If you get an M6, you'll worry every single day about the corrosion issues.
voigtlander bessa Rs have aligntment issues. they're very easily bumped out of alignment. people on this board were shitting on me for not knowing how to focus or how my scans were shit, but it was the dumb camera all along
What do you think /p/? Was he a good photographer?
No, but his films were pretty good - dramatic angle game was a little too strong though.

>>2886480
you have low standards
Why are cameras so expensive?
>>2885854
If they weren't then even more retards would be able to make stupid shit
Think about this; you have an analog device which counts photons in an interesting way. The more photons hit it, the more power it lets through. Now you have to cram 12~50 million of them on a board. In order to collect color information you need a tiny dye over every one. the color must be relatively exact and consistent. Then you need enough ADCs to sate all of them, and interface them with computers which must decode and process the data from every single one every time a photo is taken. Some of these cameras can do it nearly ten times a second, possibly more if you're spending THAT much.
And we haven't even started talking about the camera yet
>>2885866
Lol!!! The concept of a digital sensor is complicated therefore the camera is expensive!!
Does mass production mean nothing to you? Incredibly complex objects such as camera sensors and CPUs can still be made for incredibly low prices.
Hello i'm planning to enter the realm of cinema, and i'm wondering which is the best camera for a cinematic look appearence videos.
Note: I am a totally rookie on this, so any help would be very very much appreciated
>>2885677
I'm gonna guess the answer to your question is actually about shutter speed. You're trying to get that look of natural motion, not a slide show of snapshots in quick succession. What you have to do, regardless of the camera you choose, is make sure the shutter speed isn't too fast.
The basics of videography are similar to the basics of photography.
Learn about shutter speed and aperture and all that and then look at the difference between video shot at quick vs slow shutter speed.
>>2885677
>best camera for a cinematic look appearence videos
prepare for a thread of misinformation, bickering, and terrible advice
>>2885677
shoot 24fps at 1/24s.
crop to 21:9.
shoot flat profile and give it a yellow tint.
use 50mm f1.8 lens wide open. you probably need an nd filter for this. don't get a chink one.
or maybe get a chink one to flare it up.
Hey /p/, how do you manage your photo collections? I just got into LR and I think I messed up.
Anyhow, I have a lot of pictures, say from my holidays. Several have some artistic merit, others are holiday snapshits.
How should I keep my photos organized, yet optimized for storage space?
I have two terabyte drives that I intend to use for photos. Should I keep the unedited RAW files? After I'm done with postproduction, what is the best way to export my pictures keeping maximum quality?
Should I bite the bullet and print?
Pic related, one of my faves.

OP, did you shoot this at Wat Chai Mongkhon in Chiang Mai?
Hello, first time on /p/. Sorry in advance if this question doesn't belong here.
I'm not a photographer, just a normie who takes photos with my phone here and there. BUT...there's one thing I find lacking nowadays.
I had a couple of Fujifilm cameras (3.2 mp, 5 mp) back in the day. They both had a great feature, where it would take a photo both with and without flash automatically at the same time. As a non-photographer, I never know when to use flash and when not to (let alone modes and manual tweaking etc). I always have to guess, and I get it wrong half the time. Or I have to take one, and then switch the flash mode and take the other, etc etc. Not convenient, esp when taking photos of friends and family, or a quick snap is needed (a nice cat momentarily wandering into my garden). Taking both automatically and then choosing which ones I prefer at my own leisure is much more convenient.
So...is there any camera app these days that offers such a feature (on Android)? Or if not a Play Store-available app, then does any phone manufacturer make their own exclusive camera app with the feature? I'd make that my next purchase. Thanks.

On second thought, ugh who wants to look at her ugly mug. File deleted. I'll post two I just took with my Moto X, to illustrate the point. (Yes I know the quality is terrible lel)

The stupid "flash" you have is a ridiculous led with barely 2 meters of reach. It can't even trigger a real flash.
>Not convenient, esp when taking photos of friends and family, or a quick snap is needed
Well, it's the point of phone photography, being "convenient". Save some money and buy a real camera if pictures matters to you.

indeed, sadly it doesn't look like we will obtain any help.
What the fuck do I charge?
I brought my camera gear into work yesterday and my boss asked me to snap some photos of the band we had on. He found my photo blog and likes the waterfront pictures I've been taken, he likes the band photos I took for him, and he's asking what I charge.
I have no fucking idea, I'm a total amateur.
Help me please, I don't want to rip my boss off (it's a good gig and management is superb) and I never thought my photography would be anything more than a hobby.

depends on the gig, and the quality you can deliver.
If it's a simple 1-2 hour photoshoot gig with some 20 delivered edited pictures, i might charge 200€
If it's a longer gig, like ~5 horus documenting an event, and with maybe some 100 pictures delivered, i might charge 350€. But it depends on what type of gig it is. I might charge a student association less than a restaurant. And weddings are like 250% at least.
But this is a real problem in the photo world, inconsistent pricing. Some dude who produced half the quality you do might charge double than you do and be might have tons of clients lined up. Success in photography is really mysterious imo.
But if it's your very first gig and you don't really have that much experience and there's a risk you might fuck up, i wouldn't charge more than 100 dollars. Justify it by claiming it's a days work at 12.50$ an hour. You might only be shooting 1-3 hours but the editing take up the rest of the time. Also make sure it includes cost for travel and food and insurance. Always make a profit.
Well first of all, can you guarantee good shots?
If the answer is anything but "absolutely" then you shouldn't charge much. Even easy gig work can be pretty taxing, thirsty work.
Do you know your gear inside out? Can it handle high ISO work? If not, do you know how to save it?
>>2885544
Well first off FUCKING RESIZE YOUR PHOTO, two, depends on how much time you spend shooting, editing, print or digital. Take all those hours and give yourself a modest $16 an hour.

I've recently bought a 680iii
Make sure the lens is in top condition - no fungus, no balsam separation, etc.
Make sure that there aren't too many knock marks on the body. Look for big scratches around the lens.
Don't worry too much about the counter - they're easy to reset and a service is relatively cheap. Think of using this camera like a 5x4 more than a point and shoot - you won't shoot too many rolls on it.
make sure you're comfortable with the ratio you choose before you buy - there aren't many 6x9 enlargers around and the wider the frame the fewer the shots per roll
the GW 670 is rare and the 680 is harder to work with, but do consider them before you choose between 645 and 690 as sometimes prices are good
the lenses are not as sharp as the 7s - there's some dispute over how good they are - this is a rare large scan (40-50MP) from a 690iii.

So what is the secret to making a living from art photography? Do artists do commercial jobs for their income? Do only the most successful manage to live from art alone?
Do you have an MFA? Great.
No? You'll never make it.
>>2884695
Why do you need a degree for art? Isn't your portfolio everything?
a MFA is definitely not a must
i think it just takes a long time to actually make a name for yourself in the art world. your photos dont have to be good. its your name that sells.
I make a full time living as a commercial photographer. I can't complain, considering im 20 years old. It's not all fun and games and working a normal 9 to 5 would probably be less work but it wouldn't give me the freedom I have
Ok /p/, lets discuss who we thing is the greatest photographer ever.
I would have to go with W. Eugene Smith. So much of his work is art in and of itself, like Ansel Adams. But he was able to tell complete stories with just pictures. Stories of war (Iwo Jima), happiness (Nurse Midwife), grief, tragedy (Minimata), the turmoil of a decade (Pittsburg), or even just the life of a normal person (Country Doctor).
Me
>>2884501
His Pittsburgh series is astonishing
how about we stop aping an "appreciation" for photographers of long past decades and realize that there are people producing the same caliber of work in the modern era every single day, they simply came after the burst in consumer technology.
He's great. Greatest? Fuck off you hipster faggot.
