My buddy offered to sell me his miata for 2k, he said, "a rear cv axle clicks pretty bad but works, exhaust header gasket needs replacement, top is fuck, a new rear caliper so the e brake can work, a new motor, and 145k miles new clutch" it has a lift kit as it was an offroad roach, should I go for it or naw?

Or is he just trying to dump his moneypit on me? I'm also getting rid of my current moneypit so I don't wanna jump for a new one this early. I'm waiting for him to get back to me on the year and varient.

Your English is retarded
Does it NEED a new engine and clutch and its at 145k or does it HAVE a new engine and clutch with 145k on them
>>
>>17683054

That's the direct message he sent me, I'm going to assume it needs all of those.
>>
>>17683068
Then yeah your friend is a shitcunt trying to dump his piece of crap on you and too much of a Jew to even offer a friend discount for his assraped shitbox. Consider the fact that you can get a medium high mileage good to great condition miata for 5k, and the cost of all of those fixes is going to be at least 1.5x the cost of the car if you are extremely lucky and get amazing deals on it all. I wouldn't offer him 250 for that shit heap and I'm sure the body has been futtbucked seeing as it's a "off-road roach".

Tldr: your friends last name is probably goldsteinrosenshekelburgblatbaum, and you have shit taste in friends so walk the fuck away from the car and that person.

Hey /o/, first time buying a car, and I need an answer ASAP.
I'm about to buy my first car, it can be anything, as long as it's 5k, so nothing great, but nothing completely shitty.
My question here is, should I try to find a manual rwd, or should I just settle for an automatic fwd?
I don't actually know how to drive stick, but I'm willing to give it a try. My budget doesn't really allow me to start buying car parts and switching out a busted ass clutch, which I doubt will even happen, so I wanna hear your take on it.

Read the sticky, buy a corolla.

You can learn to drive stick its not that hard just take it slow.
Only people that hate cars drive Automatic FWD i honestly don't even know why anyone engineered them.

>it can be anything, as long as it's 5k
Get whatever you want, but
If 5k is your budget,
Spend 4 and put $1000 into repairs.
I guarantee any used 4-5k shitbox has at least $1000 in preventive and overdue maintenance.

So a few months ago I hit a deer and fucked my bumper and hood. Luckily I found a replacement at the junkyard, but they are a different color and look shitty. I don't know anyone who does paint work, so I figured I could buy some gloss vinyl wrap and put that on instead. My question is, will this look right or is there a big different between paint and glossy vinyl? My car is black which is why I figure this could work, any other color would be hard to match with generic vinyl colors
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>17681765
And to clarify, I mean only putting the vinyl on the hood and bumper, not the whole car
>>
>>17681765
i vinyl wrapped a roof and trunk and my friends thought i got a respray, but on a bumper it is susceptible to rock chips and more heat so it may warp and fade
>>
>>17681765
rattlecan the panels. it will last longer and cost less than vinyl.

Looking to get a fun to drive drop top so I was looking at a Miata but Z3s in my area aren't much more expensive than clean miatas. Are they really that unreliable and hard to work on? I found some nice ones for 6k in my area but I don't want to hemorrhage money on maintenance. What would you guys reccomend?

>>
>>17681539
They're not hard to work on, they just can end up being money pits if you don't know what to look or how to maintain them.
>>
>>17681539
>Are they really that unreliable and hard to work on?
No. Neither 4 or 6 cylinder Z3s are "hard" to work on or "unreliable". The M42/44 and Aluminum block M52s are all fairly durable and reliable.

Hey /o/
I'm looking at buying a first car, I don't want to spend more than $10 000 CAD. I've been looking at early 2000s Audi A4's as most of them are ~$5000 or less. Not sure if I should go with the 1.8T, 2.8, or 3.0. Is there anything in specific I should be looking for if I buy one?

Also if you have any suggestions for similar cars, it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Get a saab of same vintage. Will be cheaper and easier to maintain. The 2.0T with the big T will also have more power and easier to upgrade.

Those off brand gas stations
Not your Exxons and your Shells
But your American Gas' and 24/7 Fuel

Is it bad for your car?

They're usually 10-20 cents cheaper per gallon.

There's this sus looking off brand station I went to a few times and it always seemed like my gas burned faster and I lost a lot in an odd amount of time, so yeah I usually avoid them unless they got a real good deal.

TLDR: how to tell if clogged cat without ripping off cat?

I have an OBD2 97 mk3 Jetta I'm fixing for someone. It's been throwing codes for the cat for a while now, but also some other things including the cam shaft position sensor (however this code comes and goes). The car has been losing power over the months and eventually started stalling in parking lots if it wasn't given any power. It's an automatic if it makes any difference. The car now stalls right after starting, like it runs for all of a second and then dies instantly. Is there an easy way for me to make sure it's the cat and that it's completely clogged? I can't seem to get the bolts off to just rip it off, so I might have to just buy a thicc drill bit and punch a bunch of holes in it before I can get it to a muffler shop. However, I want to make sure it's the cat before I destroy it. Any tips?

So I picked up a sparkly clean $4900 1 owner 2003 e500 (with all recalls and fully replaced air suspension) a couple weeks ago, and I'm really loving it. The thing can really scoot, handle, and the level of fit and finish in the interior is top notch. Also, everything works other than the power head rest for the drivers seat, and on paper it should be very reliable which is lovely. Anyway, I have some questions I'm hoping you all can answer for me.

1. I really like driving with the suspension raised up because it gives the car magic carpet or fluffy cloud ride quality, so I was wondering if doing so might hurt the longevity of the suspension? I raise it up on long cruises and lower it when I feel like doing some spirited driving, which brings my to my next question

2. Is it ok to switch between suspension settings whenever I want? I constantly switch between regular, sport and sport 2 depending on what kind of driving I feel like doing

3. How careful do I need to be with this engine?
I know these motors can be very dependable and rack up lots of miles, but I have a bit of a lead foot and I'm not sure how well they withstand being pushed to anywhere from 3.5k to 5.5k RPM on an almost daily basis, so if someone could answer that it would be great.
4. Does the car box feel a bit clunky in the city?

It's not too bad, but kind seems to get a little confused around town sometimes so I was wondering if this was a cause for concern

5. Are there any features on this car I probably don't know about ? Things I can access that I probably don't know about etc ?

This thing is gonna blow its water pump, then its head gasket, then some random wiring harness that you won't be able to find for months, then something will randomly happen to the air suspension again.

Each will either be at least $1k starting price just for parts or take you so long in labor that you won't be driving it much anyway.

Sell it quick and get a Lexus GS.

Multiple time Benz owner here. I would say there's not much need to worry.

1. I doubt you're doing much, if any, harm by using the adjustable suspension. It was made to be adjustable, after all. Granted any sort of action with the car is technically "wear", but I don't see anything wrong.

2. Ought to be fine, yeah. I imagine if the car's made it that far it won't be crapping out anytime soon. That being said: if you're genuinely concerned you can just limit the amount of time you let yourself change the suspension in a given period. Say only a few shifts a week?

3. Not particularly, assuming it's been properly maintained and has had no major damage to it. I have an '04 C240 with 100k+ miles I hold at ~4.5k rpm for miles on end for long highway runs. Thing still runs flawlessly today.

I also have an '09 CLK550 and it treats me well with fun weekend drives and occasional errands pushing it to near redline often.

That being said I try to have good upkeep with these cars, as well as do small things like make sure they're warmed up before hitting high rpm's.

These things have been bullet-proof in my experience. I'm sure people have had their fair share of bad experiences, a la >>17681925, but I've probably put less than $2k on (non-scheduled) maintenance on both cars throughout my entire ownership. And yes, I purchased both brand new.

4. Yep. The transmissions on this era Benz can be clunky at consistently slow speeds. Especially with the higher trim levels you tend to get occasional jerks when the car holds a low gear in traffic or city crawling.

5. That's something for you to find I guess. Just scour the owner's manual or online forums. You never know what you can learn in just some afternoon free time.

Good luck, my man. That car should serve you well.
