My dad is offering his old 320d Touring to me as a first car.
It's an AT Diesel family wagon, and a bit big for the city, but it's RWD and drives nicely.
Should I take it or maybe sell it for a Golf 7 or some other car that won't rape me on insurance as much?

3 days ago I just bought a Focus Mk3 from 2015, like the one in the photo, with a 1.5 diesel engine.
Put some premium diesel in it, drove 10 miles, engine dead. Computer says "Engine service now".
Had to tow it to the Ford dealership. In the weekend none of the guys working there know how to diagnose it with a laptop. I'll have to wait until Monday to find out what's going on.
Engine starts for 2 seconds when I turn the ignition, then it dies again.
Before I bought it, I took it to the dealership for a revision, they said everything was ok with it.
What are you bad luck stories with newly purchased cars?

Yep. Car's papers say diesel, badge, etc. Sure I fueled with diesel as well, says on the gas station receipt.
I found lots of posts on the net with people having that message, some after refuelling as well, but no consistent solutions.

I've got €20k ish to spend on a car. Going for a used one obviously. Here are the top contenders:
>2013 BMW 320i, 170 HP (RWD)
>2015 FiST, 182 HP (FWD)
>2012 Merc C-class 180, 156 HP (RWD)
>2012 Audi a3 1.4 TFSI, 122 HP (FWD)
The BMW is the best rated, the FiST the most fun, the Merc has the best interior (I find this also important) and the a3 is pretty cheap and a very good drive as well. I drove the 2001 one when it was still pretty new.
Halp me choose.

The FiST is the most expensive at 22k but only 16k done (10k miles)
BMW/Merc for 20k each and about 60/80k (37k/49k miles)

Of the four you posted, I think I'd probably go with the 320i. You're kind of in a bad middle ground in terms of your price point, if you're just looking for a daily driver I'd go for something much cheaper and older though I guess I don't know enough about the car market in your country. I have a bitter hatred of the new BMWs because they are utterly sterile and lifeless but they are decent cars.
Is there something specific you want out of the car? Personally if I were to give you one piece of advice it'd be not to buy a car out of warranty for more than €10k, but I think your circumstances are different.

Get a 3 series. If you can afford the maintenance and upkeep they are great. Ive got an 07 335xi thats modded and it is fast as fuck. about 4k in repairs over the last year though..Fuckin I-drive was 2k. mechanically its been sound though.

So I drove my car through a flooded road tonight because my jerkoff freind led me through it. Afterwards the car had trouble getting from 1st to 2nd gear and then above second. It wouldnt get to above 50 for a while. I had a long drive home so I had to keep going. After a while it started looking like it wasnt going to keep going at all but then revved really high for a second and then was shifting ok. I'm going to take it in tomorrow to get checked out. What's the worst I could have done/what will the damage be?
