Looking to get a fun to drive drop top so I was looking at a Miata but Z3s in my area aren't much more expensive than clean miatas. Are they really that unreliable and hard to work on? I found some nice ones for 6k in my area but I don't want to hemorrhage money on maintenance. What would you guys reccomend?

Is this a followup to the "european miata" thread?

They're not hard to work on, they just can end up being money pits if you don't know what to look or how to maintain them.

No. Neither 4 or 6 cylinder Z3s are "hard" to work on or "unreliable". The M42/44 and Aluminum block M52s are all fairly durable and reliable.

Water pump, suspension bushings, brakes, folding top.
Outside of that and some electrical goofiness, you'll be fine as long as it's well maintained. Buy the previous owners, not the miles or year.
These will be the next meme-car after otists ruin miatas.
