To what extent can you say you're inspired by an author before it becomes plagiarism?
I wonder if /lit/ has read Higurashi.
>>8300115
I've read Higurashi. Umineko is better.
Please answer my question.
to the point you stop getting away with it. Live big, anon
I was reading Fear and Trembling and I realized something, my true "self" is a satirical entity. I already tried to read the bible and take on a sort of pragmatic religiosity and it didn't stick. alternatively simply living to sustain a secular existence not only seems pointless but also like a terrible deal, when it would seem most sensible to mitigate the personal negative utility in my life by abbreviating it. I don't want to live in a way, which even tacitly affirms the ubiquitous idea that life is simply a given, that its value is axiomatic. I want to become a subversive distortion of that very idea and parody human existence. I want to sublimate my angst into a more comprehensive form of aesthetic ambtion, one which negates the idea of me as a self-necessitating being at all. I want to be a fucking meme basically. Are there any examples of this in literature or maybe even in real life that I can learn from? Pic vaguely related.
Donald Trump. Beware: To become a meme, you have to also relinquish feelings such as shame, weakness, ineptitude, intimacy, kindness, and most pleasure.
>>8300097
yeah I am way past that. JUST FUCK MY SHIT UP FAMM
I think this artist is on to something
how would /lit/ rank the three major holy books?
I'm thinking it's the jew bible, it's shorter and more to the point.
>>8300065
you know damn well that maybe all of five anons on this broad have read all three books and those five are too busy debating which version of each book is the most accurate to rate them against each other.
bible >>> torah >>>>> quaran
not being /pol/ or anything, from a purely literary quality the bible BTFOs the other two.
granted the bible has a lot more filler but so do the other two and proportionally it's similar.
t. actually read all 3 cover to cover. granted it was quite some time ago and if rogot most of it, but the general reaction holds true.
and in any case, the bible BTFOs the other two even harder in terms of literary influence on the western canon, which is the only thing that matters
what would be the best books for learning a martial art like boxing, muay thai, or something else?
>inb4 just take a class lol
i dont have the money for that.
>>8300052
Experience >>>>>>>>>> knowledge
>>8300057
this OP. I never heard someone reading a fucking book about how to fight. That shit's retarded.
>>8300052
This is lit not fit. Just because it's about a book doesn't mean it's literature related
What does /lit/ think of pic related?
Get out.
>>8299973
?
I just want to discuss Luna de Pluton, the new book by Dross.

hey /lit/, let's all welcome our new friends from imgur!tfw it's happening again
>recycling content that already ruined /lit/ 9 months ago
So will /lit/ get worse, or have we already reached a maximum threshold of cancer?
WHY IS IT THE 2014 LIST AGAIN AND NOT 2015?!
GOD FUCKING DAMMIT THEY'RE ALL GOING TO COME HERE TRYING TO MAKE A NEW CHART THREE TIMES A DAY FUCK
I'm about to crap my pants, what do?
Fun fact, I nearly shit myself twice today. During my lunch break I saw a woman vomit into a sandwich baggy with two flip phones inside it and I laughed so hard I had to squeeze pretty damn tight. Later I was just holding it in and was on my way to the bathroom.
I'm taking a shit as I post this. It's taking forever to come out and I'm enjoying it. I've got all night, baby. Take your time.
Bring a book of short stories with you to the bathroom, or listen to an audiobook/live performance by Charles Bukowski while you're wiping up the mess.
Is there a book with a more painful buildup than American Psycho?
The first 130 or so pages are absolute torture and are about as entertaining as reading a men's fashion catalogue
>>8299745
maybe it's not about being entertained
>>8299756
Not OP, but does Bret Easton Ellis write escapist stuff? I've never read any of his books.
>>8299756
It was pretty fucking dull though. Worth sticking through it at least.
Nobody calls James Joyce bad because they are worried a man with glasses will call them stupid, even though Joyce wrote things like this
>"I thought we would start with a little full metal alchemist" she said, reaching into a cardboard box and setting a stack of manga on the table "and if there is a little time, we could watch some anime, I brought in some Dot Hack Slash Slash Sign, have you heard of it? It's based on a video game sort of like Fields of Fantasy"
>"Nice" I said impressed by her selections, and here I was worried she would whip out a Pokemon or Sailor Moon in a lame misguided attempt adult effort to be cool.
or
>He ripped down the flyer I had just put up and studied it with narrow eyes. "But, what the hell is a manga club?" he asked, pronouncing it "mahn-jah." "Does that mean 'vampire' in Swahili or something?"
>"Funny no. It doesn't. But I wouldn't expect your pea brain to jnow any Japanese, so don't feel too bad." I was impressing myself with my witty comebacks. Who knew I had it in me? "ooh, you're so smart, Freak Girl. I wish I could be a nerd like you and start a mahn-jah club at school"
>"It's manga." I corrected "Hard-G"
Now I admit that's decent prose, but it's not the best piece of writing ever. Plus there are weaker parts of Ulysses that honestly aren't even as good as some of the writing in Metal Gear Solid, yet that doesn't get praised because it's a video game. What writers do you think are overrated /lit/?
>>8299736
>jnow
*know
>>8299736
>there are weaker parts of Ulysses that honestly aren't even as good as some of the writing in Metal Gear Solid
weak b8
>>8299750
I'm not baiting; go on /v/ and Im sure someone could chalk up numerous games with deeper plot and emotion than Ulysses
how does this make you feel /lit/?
Pretty smug actually
teen girls do tend to have shit taste, yeah
>>8299666
>implying that all YA lit is about girls fighting the patriarchy
>not realizing that Catcher in the Rye was the first YA novel
men are better than women at everything, especially writing, and even in YA lit
Daily reminder that not using a nom de plume is attention-seeking narcissism and equivalent to tripfagging on 4chan.
You're not going to be a real life tripfag, are you Anon?
>muh attention
>muh fame
>muh "i'll show my high school bullies"
Fucking pathetic, mates.
I agree with this and will take it a step further:
Anyone who refers to him or herself as a writer or author is an egotistical hack.
I mean, yeah, the ego gets involved. You can either make music like the album Golem by Wand, or you can make music like Abbey Road by The Beatles. Yes - one sacrifices some artistry, but let's get fucking real here. Do you want to be read or not?
>>8299647
anglo-american empiricism has so thoroughly poisoned all aspects of life such that today even the most self-absorbed of the artists, the writer, for whom the task is to render on the page a piece of his soul, is expected to minimize the allegedly contaminating affects of his ego and subjectivity.

What's the hype about Goethe?
A majority of men of letters worship this man as if he was the greatest writer of all time. I know Faust and Werther are great world works, but someone could honestly explain me why so much hype?
>>8299605
Why don't you just read him to find out?
>>8299682
But I've already read his works!
>>8299842
You may have 'read' them, but you haven't "r e a d" them.
I just wanted to tell you all to keep your chin up. Keep reading and keep writing :)
>>8299551
Oh I would stick two of my fingers up his arse and gobble his manpole, gorgeous!
>>8299562
Very nice indeed.
>>8299562
>>8299564
You guys are such fags. Read a book.
What Donne poem is your favorite
>>8299537
The one where he implores God to fuck him:
Batter my heart, three-person'd God, for you
As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town to another due,
Labor to admit you, but oh, to no end;
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captiv'd, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be lov'd fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy;
Divorce me, untie or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.
