*I am trying to make everyone realize that we need to exchange sweat in past tense with swat. Not like to 'swat a fly' but 'swat' as in the 'a' in tank.

Odysseus is the shitposter. Lets his home fall to ruin then slaughters a bunch of people for doing what he told Thersites was the smart thing to do.

It sounds like every poster on r/books has this quote printed out or committed to memory.

>This book was too intellectual, a pretentious writer trying to impress everyone by using overly complex language. It wasn't too hard, not for a Chem engineer like me, it was just pointless when he could have used simpler writing. It was also really boring! Now, The Name of the Wind, that's real literature.

What would you guys say should be read before Nietzsche and Kierkegaard?

I've been taking an online course on Kierkegaard, and got a bit on Socrates through that. So I'm finally getting more into the Greeks with plays, Homeric epics and hymns, and Plato.

What's most important to read in the gap between the ancients and modern philosophers?

Kierkegaard
>some understanding of Hegel, Descartes, Kant, the greeks, Spinoza, Fichte and Schlegel
>Socrates, specially early Plato's dialogues
>his thesis on Irony is REALLY important to understand his other books
>Goethe

Nietzsche
>Schopenhauer
>Dostoevsky
>Greeks
>Montaigne
>some understanding of Hegel, Descartes, Kant, Leibniz and Spinoza
>Goethe

any further knowledge is nice for both. But I think that's enough
>>
>>8303014

I'm waiting for someone else to read it and post about it.
I don't like old mystic white dudes or British humor, or social commentary, or pretension and superficially speaking this books cuts too close for comfort, but I don't know enough about it.

I have Iliad and Odyssey. What order should I read them in? Anything else I should have other than just reading them like plans, guides, lectures etc?

One at a time, lad. One at a time.

You don't need anything else, just read the Iliad first and then the Odyssey.
>>
>>8302546
>>8302552
Don't listen to this cunt. Read them both simultaneously, one line from the Iliad, one from the Odyssey, all the while noticing the subtle stylistic differences that have provided clues to scholars pointing towards one of the poems having been authored by a woman (which?).

why is this "pynchon-lite"?
v, lot 49, inherent vice, and bleeding edge, are all far simpler than this

enjoying it btw
30 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It's not; it's a lesser-Pynchon. Not the same as Pynchon-lie.
>>
>>8302540
>>8302568
What's a good starting point for Pynchon? Other than lot 49
>>
>>8302574
Lot 49 in the best imo because it's short, so you don't have to invest much, and because it has a lot of that energy that's characteristic of his best stuff. Other than that Inherent Vice is also good because it's easy to read (though not necessarily easy to follow the plot) and is a lot more relaxed, but it's like 400 pages. There's also a movie to go with it.

Do you keep a commonplace book? What sort of stuff do you put into it? Do you use it often? How do you organize it?

>>
>>8302562

It's a kind of journal, but less about laying out what you did / how you feel day to day and more for writing down things of interest to you. Inspiration, quotes, musings, etc.

It used to be pretty normal to keep one but it's fallen out of favor in modern times. Still, I figured if anybody would keep them it'd be people from /lit/.
>>
>>8302537
I hadn't heard of this either, but it seems like a cool idea. I might start one.
