What are some good books regarding the ancient civilizations of western history? Examples being Greece, Rome, Egypt, etc. and how the politics, scientific breakthroughs, and ideologies that were founded then still play into today's world.

Hows that?
i saw alot of shitposting about Morrison the other day
honest question..is she the greatest american author of all time?
>>8510298
You aren't funny with these threads.
She's very good, but she's not among the best.
>>8510302
who would you put ahead of her?
Well, I just finished The Road... what an amazing book. Can anyone recommend me a book similar to this one? Can be post-apocalyptic or cyberpunk or whatever. I just loved how bleak and depressing it is.

Read more Cormac.
what was the point of this book?
will literature ever be relevant again? what would it take? or will it become like theatre, plays, etc. are these days?
>>8510173
When was literature ever 'relevant'?
>what would it take?
Readers.
Can't have literature "being relevant again" where no one reads.
>>8510177
Suppose it depends on your definition of literature but sailors on the way into New York from London used to rush to the front of the ship to shout what happened in the latest Dickens chapters to the dockmen
so /lit/ I have read a good amount of books, and I want to know, what makes a book good, or bad. Or is there no such thing as good or bad writing, but only what we decide to perceive?
shameless self bump

Good in what sense? The Harvard Medical Encyclopedia and Melvilles Mobydick are both good books
>>8510139
Good in the sense that they will be remembered/enjoyed.
Going to Barnes and Noble. What should i get?

This will be a great thread. Not.
mother,
Boring. That's all you got?
Which work of literature did you write about for your senior English research paper in high school?
>pic related
lmao if this isn't bait you're a tryhard
>book has sex scene
>author doesn't include the rimjob
I skip all the sex scenes
>mfw incest
>book has a scene in a bar
>author doesn't include protagonist crying in the bathroom
Just finished reading pic related. Felt it was a totally pointless novel. I used to like post-modernism when I was younger, but I think I'm coming to terms with the fact that I was/am an edgy pseudo-intellectual. Is there any real redeeming quality to this kind of thing? Not a troll btw.

Idk how it makes me a pleb... I don't post on this board usually, just asking opinions... I recentally reread infinite jest after liking it a lot when I was younger, as well as some other DFW stuff and earlier DeLillo, and I thought it was all kind of silly and pathetic and emotionally sterile. Maybe that makes me a pleb or whatever, just wondering what people think.

Pomo ain't for everyone, OPswede
What would you leave behind if you die right now ?
Not your body or your messy room, i mean stuff written stories etc.
>What are they mostly about

I would leave my folder of Pepe the /r9k/ frog of virginity so my friends and family could see just how troubled, deep, and spiritual I truly was
>>8510022
Pic related and a bunch of other shit including a full handwritten first draft of another book that I only recently started transcribing and editing.
I'd regret not being able to finish copying and editing that second one but it could be worse.

A set of instructions to complete my artwork.
Hi /lit/, I need to read a book from this list:
http://www.tokyoacademics.com/uploads/5/0/1/9/50198725/ib_book_list.pdf
I'm a pleb but even I know most of them are memes, so which one do you recommend?
>>8509979
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a great book
>>8509979
One? Which ONE? Read them all!
But seriously that's a lot of fucking books, if you only need to read one, pick a short story. Or look them up by title and pick what interests you. Anything you're in the mood for?
>>8510601
So I used to read a lot but because of time and other reasons I quit, I know that was stupid but I want to start reading again. I'm looking for entry level literature that will keep me entertained

All authors are pretentious dorks.
This is a fact you can not deny it
