The Man Booker shortlist was announced today.

>Paul Beatty - The Sellout
>Deborah Levy - Hot Milk
>Graeme Macrae Burnet - His Bloody Project
>Ottessa Moshfegh - Eileen
>David Szalay - All That Man Is
>Madeleine Thien - Do Not Say We Have Nothing

Have you read any of the contenders? Anything you think should have made the cut but didn't?

Does /lit/ even read anything that doesn't have decades of critical consensus behind it?

I have read none of these nor do I care or know of any modern authors. I will however attempt to characterize the author and the basis of the drivel they have sold.

>Paul Beatty - The Sellout
Possibly black; male; novel is about some Trump-like figure that is characterized as selling his integrity for meme-fame by the support of 'backwards' and/or 'immoral' views.

>Deborah Levy - Hot Milk
Black woman; something about religion or internalized racism or whatever being the opiate of the people (and specifically, black men and especially black women).

>Graeme Macrae Burnet - His Bloody Project
WHITE MALE; something about rape or menstruation. Or a serial rapist/murderer

>Ottessa Moshfegh - Eileen
African migrant; something about a high school/middle school girl that was raped and blackmailed, or blackmailed into stripping -- regardless she killed herself and this novel is a criticism of 'rape culture' through an 'African lens' -- whatever that means.

>David Szalay - All That Man Is
WHITE MALE with dumb hair because Meds often have such hair; something about toxic masculinity and how men are shallow for defining themselves on such things.

>Madeleine Thien - Do Not Say We Have Nothing
Ching chong; female; something about how mankind and its diverse cultures are great and invaluable and something about inalienable human rights -- possibly rape culture as well.

Feel free to judge my accuracy.

Is the Landmark Histories series good in terms of translations, notes and supplemental material? I recently dug up old Penguin copies of Herodotus, Thucydides, Plutarch and Livy and I've been digging this Oxford Polybius I found for cheap.

I had a dream the moon turned into a boil of worms.

The worms fell from the sky and started flying. They lodged themselves in peoples brains as tiny hyper advanced micro-bacteria started filling the air with ammonia. The worms lodged themselves into peoples brains and took direct control of them. Then people started killing each other. They called in the military but pretty soon they were gasping for air. People were living in oxygen tents and told not to go outside.

All the sudden things started hatching from under peoples skin. Tiny spiders. Millions of them. Their stomachs would rupture as they crawled through their skin. They would crawl out from underneath peoples fingernails. These other creatures would fall from the sky and cut through peoples skin, which would create open sores for the newly infested bacteria to settle in.

I was in my grandmas trailer in Lake Elsinor when it happened. I covered the trailer in plastic sheeting and ran the air compressor next to a 50 gallon tank of liquid oxygen I’d stolen. I saw the mailman die screaming and swore to myself I didn’t want to go out the same way. I set the pressure on high and decided to get high one last time, filling the entire trailer with oxygen. The oxygen started burning my eyes, I decided it wasn’t quick enough, so I removed the pilot light and set the gas on high.

At some point I was feeling woozy and decided to light one final cigarette. Without thinking, the lighter got on the gas and lit the entire house on fire, enveloping the entire house in flames. I blacked out screaming from the pain of being lit on fire, and the last thing I remember was that I felt my eyelids melting over my eyeballs and that I couldn’t see the flames.

When I woke up I was slowly being lowered into a pit. I could hear things sliding around softly below. I was in a well completely without light, and from what I remember, the surface was completely covered in wet and darkness, with only the occasional flash of lightning to illuminate my surroundings. Strapped to a stone slab with leather harnesses, I wondered at the remarkable wet sound coming from below. When I reached the bottom, I was injected with something that completely paralyzed me, left me numb without sensation. I could hear them stepping over something, (onto something) something soft and yeilding yet brittle and crunchy.

I was thrown into a pit where I quickly fell unconscious. I landed on something soft and quietly drifted in and out of sleep. With but a twinge of feeling restored, I could them. Round, soft shapes, naked things, things of flesh, without hair, with eyes, a nose, a head, and tiny mouths with but a few sharp, tiny teeth.

Babies. They were fucking babies.

The crunching and wet sounds I had heard were the sounds of people stepping on piles of newborn babes, their bones and organs twisting and compressing underneath the weight of whoever or whatever carried me here. They were stacked on top of each other, feeding each other, the dead falling beneath the living in a pile that had no bottom. To my horror, I realized they all were teething, and they were feasting not only upon my flesh, but upon their own.

Feeling was restored in spurts and fits to one hand, and I felt upon the brow of one a scar beneath the forehead, and I realized the reason they were so slow, the reason they were not crying, was that they had each been lobotomized, left to feel only hunger. They could do nothing but eat, they could not crawl, they could not walk, they could not even grasp, merely flail about in an effort not to sift towards the bottom. I tried not to think of the thousands of tiny bones and skulls at the bottom of this endless pit, if it had a bottom, I tried not to think of them eating my numb and pallid flesh as I lay there, cold, wide eyed and blind in the absolute darkness of the cave.

And in the final mercy, as madness completely overtook me, I could not even close my eyes as I felt a single sharp tooth press softly into the whites of my eye, and thought for a single moment I saw a tiny blue spark before I receded into infinity and the world fell away.

This was pretty funny, right?

I was genuinely laughing out loud at the goldmines chapter, or when the kid was f*cking with the market people, or Fyodor Pavlovich's general antics, and so on and so forth.
