of been accomplished by a black man?
are you asking if a black man could steal a story from a culture that isn't his own and change it to reflect his current situation?
joyce was basically a nigger in his personal life

are you implying that Joyce stole Ulysses from the Odyssey
because if you did, that would be the dumbest shit ever?
I'm not really sure how to word what my question is, but I'll try. I want to get into reading, I got some books that seem to be well liked here from my library. I grabbed The Plague and The Idiot.
I've had the books out for about a month now, and I've read maybe 30 or so pages of The Plague. The book is interesting to me, I want to read it, but when I'm not working and have free time, I end up just wasting time on the internet as apposed to doing anything productive.
I could be reading, something I want to do, but I just end up taking the lazy route and go on 4chan or go on other forums or play games.
So basically what I'm asking is how do I get into reading? I've tried to a few times over the years and it just always ends up with me getting less than half way into a book, and just dropping it completely. I can like the book, I can be enjoying it, but I won't finish it. Is it because my brain is used to fast forms of media (games or movies)?
The obvious solution is "just go and read", but I'll end up taking a break not long into to get something to drink or to check something online and I don't come back to reading. I don't want to necessarily "force" myself to read, because that might make it feel like a chore and make me not want to do it. But maybe forcing myself to do it is the only way to really get into it?
IMO designate a time of your day to read. I do most of my reading on the trains where there isn't even phone signal to dick around. If you have a park in your neighborhood just go for a walk with your book and leave your phone at home.
you could try to find a more palatable type of book, or maybe a web novel; or you could try to read at a different pace.

Read.
should I major in literature and do a minor in graphic design if I want to write stories with pictures?
not unless you must get hired or don't know how to make pictures
Or you could just write stories and illustrate them and submit them.

I can draw, I was refering to a comic.
In a fantasy adventure book, do you guys think that the writer should create himself ALL monsters and creatures, or there is no problem in "borrowing" a few ones already well know in fantasy (fairies, trolls, goblins, gnomes, vampires, minotaurs, this kinda of thing)
It depends. If youre trying to make something new and good, do extensive research on existing mythologies and construct everything in an interesting unusual way. If youre trying to just make some fun pulp than borrow what you want doesnt matter
>>8513664
I don't think there's anything wrong with using previously known monsters, but I feel like a lot of fantasy doesn't really expand on them.
>Hearty, strong and gold hungry dwarves
>magical, powerful, beautiful, ageless elves
>big burly orcs that only live to kill
>fairies are either mischievous or a friendly companion, sometimes a combination
>smug vampires that are outwitting the foolish humans at every turn

Anyone else think the Half-Blood Prince movie was better than the book?
I'm looking for a work of literature which takes you on a descend, down, down, down into your mind, so far that eventually everything seems strange and alien.

What would you do with your Godly powers?
Begin constructing a machine that would harvest the mind of every sentient being throughout the universe's history from milliseconds before the death of their body.
Then again, wasn't Bowman kind of at the beck and call of the creators of the Monoliths? I remember in 2010 that he had a few responsibilities even as the Star Child, but I can't remember whether or not he was released from those duties afterwards.
>>8513481
So here's how I understand (or don't) what the creators are doing. There's a chapter in the book where he approaches the red giant star and there's the "space ship parking lot" with all of the old ships. I think that the creators search for intelligent life and give them powers, which they then return to their home worlds? They help the development of various forms of life across the universe.
I just finished reading the book, and want to read the sequels now

What's the best e-reader (with e-ink) for pirating shit?
I know the kindle uses a proprietary file format to books that makes this difficult
whats the open standards one that makes it easiest? I want maximized functionality
>>8513283
