What field are you interested in?

If you aren't looking at the psychoanalytic schools, which are based around personalities and specific works, and you aren't interested in the pop-sci side of things (people like Oliver Sacks spring to mind), just go to the library and browse.

Psych is a largely anonymous field these days and people publishing originally don't typically write books, so you're better off with textbooks or other reference-type books. I'd recommend going to a university library and picking out some books expounding the basic modern theories. Crack it open, see whether you're into it, and if not, pick another one. Breadth and clarity of terminology, concepts, assumptions and method of each approach is what's most important when first trying to learn the basics.

and psychoanalysis in general - it's interesting, and certainly useful for therapy and everyday life, but its accuracy is entirely unconfirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt. I believe that Jung knew this but many people I know who are into psychoanalysis do not.

For pop psych, check out Oliver Sacks. His books on hallucinations and brain deficits are fascinating.
