Norm's book is coming out next week, and it's getting some good reviews. It's sold as a memoir but it's not really. Apparently it's Nabokovian.
>We get some stunning tidbits from the real Norm in Based on a True Story, but he vanishes into a haze of performative self-deprecation and dry wit anytime we start getting too close. Without going into details, I'll just note that the "memoir" begins to fall apart when a resentful ghostwriter starts chiming in. Only Norm Macdonald would ghostwrite his own ghostwriter. Only Norm Macdonald would loudly proclaim a preference for layer-less comedy while borrowing heavily from Nabokov's Pale Fire.

I'll read it, Norm is my comedy waifu
What's with him suddenly being discussed now? He's corny.

He murdered Ellis on twitter, making him a minor meme.
Second only to Shakespeare.
... Third only to Pynchon...

Dickens is the literal reincarnation of Shakesperare. Look at his painting and then look at Dickens. Caliban was the introduction of the democratic spirit and a sign of things to come, finalised in his second form.

My god, you're right!
Taoism is the best religion/worldview.
Proof me wrong.
Protip:You can't
Except you can't really understand Taoism without meditating your ego off and adopting a minimalist, preferably vegan, diet.
>>8511390
Redpill me on taoism; must-read titles (and why)?
What methods and criteria did you use to verify or judge Taoism to be "the best religion"? Certainly not by the population of its adherents since there are 31% more Christians than there are Taoists in the world.
Is the artist obsolete now in modern society? The intimate one on one experience between artist, and audience? Its gone, due to reddit pretty much. All the immersion and philosophy and human dilemmas now are provided by the hive mind on sites like reddit.
>>8511277
>thinks reddit is a hivemind and 4chan isn't
>>8511284
reddit is a hivemind, 4chan by its nature is not, since you don't have upvotes and downvotes and is totally anonymous, and has no moderators so the human element of censorship is gone.

Mein gott.
Are you proud of reading? Or SHOULD you be proud of reading? Are you a better person if you read? I mean objectively in an intellectual capacity, not some vague social superiority sort of way.
I think the answer is yes. I take pride in reading non-fiction (most of my reading) as well as some fiction.
I read because I will read, nothing more.
The reason I ask because I always feel like a cunt for thinking I'm better because I read, but isn't that technically true in an an intellectual capacity? Reading takes effort and focus and you're always learning new things. I would say it is objectively a good and well-meaning pursuit.
>>8511217
I mean, just compare somehow who actively reads and has a thirst for knowledge compared to someone who doesn't.
What are some good dystopian books /lit/?
>>8511170
My diary desu
I'm partial to Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
Who is reading these awesome books
Cretins, mostly.
>>8511153
People that lack all self worth and -awareness
plebians and people with below average iq
do you even remember half the books you've read?
>>8511113
Yes. I remember all of them, but sometimes I can't access all memories of them until I read a short passage from said book.
>>8511113
Probably not. I always forget the books i've read. Maybe I should start keeping a list.
there are a couple books I read while high, and those are the only ones Ive read as an adult that I dont really remember. I like to think I "absorbed" the narrative in some fashion but of course its bullshit
How does /lit/ like my personal library?
>>8511096
the cheap shitty chairs are at odds with the more well-appointed surroundings
>>8511096
meh, it's okayish, I've seen better
>>8511096
Really cute. Good starter library.
Starting off with:
>Slaughterhouse-Five
>A Confederacy of Dunces.
>>8511079
i didn't find slaughterhouse five "comfy" at all. apart from the factual inaccuracy i found the endless so it goesing just fucking tedious. i mean jeez kurt people die get over it
Both of those books are trash. If you find trash comfy, power to you I suppose
Bottom's Dream was a pretty comfy afternoon read.
My girlfriend fell asleep halfway through, haha.
So, I'm five chapters into this and I just have to ask... when does this get good? I hate these characters and the way everything every character says has to be some gigantic fucking monologue about the importance of beauty or some stupid shit is really getting annoying. They're all assholes.
Is it worth it to keep going?
You have to be trolling
>>8511082
No, I'm not. Henry Walton is a pretentious twat and everyone speaks in monologues. Is this one of those books with a slow start but then it picks up or something?
What is a better place to discuss comics,
/lit/ or /co/?
>>8511039
Obviously the manchild board for cartoons, you illiterate
>>8511039
nobody loves woody allen
how about instead of making dumb shit threads like this on both /lit/ and /co/ you only make threads either about comics or about literature fuckhead
>Reading TBK.
>Read about a particular scenario taking place between the characters.
>[The author couldn't be bothered explaining any further].
>"I'm not going to bother explaining what happens at this point in the story but the reader should already understand what I i'm getting at here."
Good job, you failed the authors comprehension test
>it's a gold mines chapter
>>8511027
What's a TBK? :)
Not sure if this is a thing on here or not but can we tell each other ideas for books/stories/whatever we had and then critique, improve, and/or add on to it?
Idea so far:
So it takes place in a science fiction world, though it's feudal, so kings, Knights, princesses with really high tech, but most of the world lives like medieval Europeans in small farming villages that give tribute to the local lord and shit like that. Not decided on whether or not to include actual fantasy I'll explain later. My idea is kind of like Gattaca where the ruling elite type people are genetically perfected. However what I didn't like about that was it forgot about the whole idea of genetic variation where the non genetically perfected has the potential to have a gene adaption that makes them better then the elites with pre selected genes. Maybe somewhere in the backstory of the world this has led to uprisings or something. Now though the elites search through the genes of everyone looking for that one in a billion gene adaption. Our protagonist is a simple farmboy that turns out to have one of these adaptions. I haven't decided yet how old he should be much less his characteristics. This is also where I get stuck. I want him to go on an adventure type thing but I'm not sure how to go about it. What I do know is I want his adaption to remain hidden until the end when its revealed it only allows him to only have to sleep 4 hours a night instead of 8. His seems really minor and disappointing to us and the mc, but is huge to the elites because of how much it improves efficiency, furthering a theme that people with predetermined genes are somewhat robotic.
Ok now I know this is a long shot, and you're all gonna cringe, which you should because I'm cringing at myself for typing this, but I think this has the potential to be a New York Times best seller young adult series. if I do make it to be a young adult series I'm gonna include fantasy, make the mc younger, and also include a love triangle with a girl from his home village and a princess.
So what you guys think?
>>8510987
I think you haven't written a book before
>>8510987
Oh forgot to mention Elites integrate new adaptions into the next generations of Elites
>>8511005
We're just spit balling ideas around. Is there any harm to that?
>write villainous character as the antagonist
>audience is derisive of the character and condemns the actions and goals ("Whatever the reasons, what (s)he's doing is wrong and (s)he should be punished. Not to mention his/her toxic personality.")
>write villainous character as the protagonist
>audience sympathizes with the character and will even defend or support the actions and goals, to the point of being derisive of other characters for "getting in the way" ("His/her actions may be "evil" but are totally reasonable/understandable/justified. And he/she's not really such a bad person.")
Can /lit/ explain this?
Sounds like a problem with fanboys and girls getting overly attached to mary sues in genreshit
>>8510974
That's probably the case but still amusing.
>>8510966
Gosh, it's almost like the way you present things radically changes their meaning to your audience.
What do you think adverts, propaganda, and political spin is for?
