what does lit think about reading theory?
I gave up thought a long time ago, but have a funny picture.
>>8505985
its not necessary for the layman and thats ok.
very helpful if you want to take your understanding of literature to the "next level" beyond just reading primary texts
pseuds are militantly anti-theory
do it in moderation unless you're an academic, for the sake of your own sanity.
Smart people who intend on having a career in literature enjoy it, especially when it is challenging.
Casuals who are less interested in thinking about literature, its production, its reception and so on but enjoy novels for the plot and the human characters only ever read theory in their university English courses before they go on to teach high school or work in publishing.
Transient frogposters from /pol/ and /r9k/ (60% of /lit/ now apparently) hate theory because it's somehow associated with Hillary Clinton and libruls in their puny, puny minds. Generally it's best to ignore these virgin mutants, but occasionally, if one is certain of one's own patricianhood, it is beneficial to the board to smack these illiterate reprobates down.
Simply ask them what books they read and they start foaming at the mouth.
For me it was two books, 1984 and A Brave New World, that opened my mind

Schopenhauer's 'On Women' and Mein Kampf
The God Delusion

Its not necessarily a book but reddit really changed my views politically and socially
So it is bad writing?
To me it seems a little like the way Bret Easton Ellis writes but more amateurish

is the character supposed to be dumb and insufferable?
So I've started reading this for the first time. I read 'A Brief History of Ancient Greece' and 'Mythology' to warm myself up but nothing prepared me for the absurd amount of names dropped, of people and places, in the part where he's listing off the battalions in book 2. I just know I'll struggle to keep track of all this. Any tips to improve my reading of this Anons?
>>8505917
You only need to really know a handful or two of the characters
>>8505930
Well thank fuck. Can anyone confirm?
>>8505930
This. Just let it flow over you.
One thing that happens a lot is Homer will introduce a guy, go over his whole genealogy and life story, then have him impaled by a spear in the next verse.
So don't sweat all the characters, they won't be around long.
Where is the best place for me to hire a ghostwriter to help me realize my literary ideas?

Any history book that depicts how far we've fallen in the West due to leftism

Because you don't actually read.
There was some Herbert Selby Jr. that was tough and uncomfortable to read.
Harlan Ellison is a good choice. A Boy and His Dog required me to distance myself from the concept of rape in order to enjoy it.
I wanted to share a writing.

Are there any American authors on the same level as Tolstoy, Gogol and Dostoevsky?
Melville aaaaand that's about it
Toni Morrison
Faulkner, Pound, and Melville are above them
I just finished the first section of this and it's incredible so far. Not like other books from him I've read, but this is thrilling in a really subtle way.
Really reminds me of Calvino.
I've heard a lot of criticism that it doesn't feel complete - does it get worse? What happens in the next 600 pages that concerns so many readers?

How would you convince a STEM type (who only reads sci-fi/fantasy) to start reading literary fiction?
> to start reading literary fiction?
I wouldn't.
>>8505750
This
>>8505730
Exactly the same way you would convince a humanties type to learn more about STEM
I'm thinking hitting up some bookstores tomorrow /lit. which books should I shoplift tomorrow if I can find them at the stores?

Sounds like it could be fun and he seems obsessed with Borges, but I'm wondering whether my comprehension is up to possible po-mo-ry

I am ultra-pleb trying to get into reading. A good balance between engaging, with some depth and somewhat accessible is what I think I need to begin. Read stoner and that was near perfect in my eyes. Tried brothers karamazov and just couldn't get into it. Is blood meridian somewhat accessible?
