My son is a year old and actually does pay attention when I read books to him, but I have no idea what's on his level right now. "First words/numbers" books are boring as fuck and I know he doesn't really get those yet. Anyway, what books should I get him? He has some Beatrix Potter, some Winnie the Pooh, The Little Prince (dual English/French,) and a couple of random folktale books.

At 1 y.o. could read him Mein Kampf as long as it was in a soothing voice

Dont worry about it, my daughters favorite book was goodnight moon and i read it to her every night before bed. It wasnt until she was three that I could go crazy. Read to make him happy and he will appreciate it when you crank it up.
The Pigeon books by Mo Willems, and anything by Sandra Boynton. Trust me: my kids are 2 and 4, and they both loved those to pieces.
Real talk here: could me using partial song lyrics from a very foreign but semi-popular and successful band be grounds for a copyright infringement? The song itself is a fossil and reasonably obscure, but the band's still playing.
No, I don't want to just pick another song - this one fits my themes and even plot almost too perfectly, and I found out about it only a few days ago. My novel's almost finished.

This lad literally copy pasted Wikipedia articles into his bestselling novels.
>>8509183
Well, that's all good but it doesn't answer my question. I don't think it's likely, but I want to be sure. It's not like I just slapped the lyrics in the fucking epigraph (which I don't have). They've been intertwined within numerous lines of dialogue and references.

Was just trying to semi-relevant bump you, friend.
Why not just give credit though?
Have any of you had good English/Literature teachers?
What were some things that they did that you liked?

They were all women... So, y'know..

Okay, so what did they do that you did not like?

They were thinking more with their feels than with rationality and logic
So im enjoying The Witcher video games. A friend of mine recommended reading the books. Are these things well written fantasy or is it hot garbage?
Apparently the first novel is a collection of short stories. Im very wary of reading translated books (originals in polish) anyone know if its decent?
>playing video games
>playing the Witcher
go back to /v/
>>8509096
It is tolerable and better than the game's writing.
>>8509096
Read some of them (The Last Wish and Blood of Elves, apparently a few more were translated since then).
They're not great, I don't know if it's the translation or the writing or both, but they can be a bit of a slog. Still, if you're a fan of the games (currently playing through the third one myself, I was waiting for the GOTY edition) you should check them out in chronological order (not in order of translation since those are random iirc).
so I've recently re-discovered how much I love him and his stories after a compelte set of his works. Can you guys reccomend some other authors like him ?
hp lovecraft perhaps?

Why is social justice bad?
>>8508970
Because there is a hierarchy of races and sexes, and any notion of equality perverts that human nature
>>8508989
The social sciences have proven this wrong.
/lit/, is it off limits to use a regular, action verb to describe speech?
example: "Wow OP, you should really know this, you illiterate asshole," frowned Anon.
Is 'frowned' acceptable here?
Nowadays people will say no, but in some books like Brothers K or The Sun Also Rises, I've seen "____," laughed anon. Laughed might be an exception, but I've seen it lumped into those non speaking verbs you're talking about.
Go for it.
"This is a beautiful meadow", gestured Steve.
I don't see why not, go for it. Even if it's wrong, break the rules. Who cares. It sounds fine to me.
It doesn't sound perfect, but sure.
What ya'll think of dis joint?
I didn't get to finish it...
How do you get past the instruction to remove the final fifty pages and mail them to a friend? Just keep reccing the book to people and hope someday someone sends them to you?

I really hate the outermost frame narrator. That tattoo artist loser. I can't remember his name, but it felt like he was a cheap attempt to give the more experimental sections of the novel a little bit of mass appeal. Danelwiiswieski never really found a good voice for him. He goes between being a fucking moron and almost-a-poet in the space of a sentence. I don't doubt that somebody like that exists, but they should be shot, not written into a novel.
The academic monograph (Zampano) sections are pretty cool. Some great moments in the House itself. But all the material in the appendices is tacky. It's a real mixed bag.
So, really new to this whole world of literature (used to basically read fantasy and sci-fi). Do you have any recommendations of books about literature? Is it necessary to better understand it?
norton anthology of criticism if you want to dive into Serious Academic Critical Theory TM
>>8508925
Wow boy, that's an expensive book. But thanks for the tip.
>>8508936
its not purchased often/aimed at "laymen," most uni students majoring in humanities who need to take an intro theory class.
the explanatory essays/author life bio that precede each excerpt are very helpful. the primary texts themselves vary in "interestingness"
word of warning - not everyone falls in love with theory, many hate it, even more find it boring/pointless. try looking at the index/table of contents (you can find it on the norton site) and reading a few random excerpts online. if you don't hate it go ahead and buy it. otherwise maybe dropping $70 on isomething you're gonna drop after 10 pages might not be the best idea.
Controversial opinion: The Double is the best Dostoevsky novel because it isn't shoddy philosophy masquerading as literature
Pic related
too bad its a shitty book
seriously, i agree its a lot less ideological than his other works, but its a pretty pleb story a subpar execution
The double is basically early kafka I love it
