this is a preconversion dfw novel. it's from when he was a smart aleck, before he became an AA member, before he believed in christ. as an object of scholarly study for husky bearded khaki-wearing grad students who lust for japanese girls, it is interesting, because wallace at the time was under the spell of a lot of "literary theory," which he would later rightly dismiss. later on he would call theory "a whole lot of obfuscation whose sole raison, it seems to me, is to make the humanities as inscrutable to outsiders as the sciences." he wouldnt visit europe until 2006, when his friend jonathan franzen dragged him there to see all the crumbling buildings.

He did get married though.

Albeit his wife apparently complained he wasn't very good at sex since he was something like a 25 year old virgin when they married.

I've read most of the classics and many many modern novels and I can safely say that people who don't read aren't missing out on anything.

It's basically like watching tv; not shitting on your hobby, just saying it's not a big deal and actually I don't think it's good for you.

It took you reading that much to figure that out?

Do you have a mental deficiency?

I, too, have read many of the classics, such as harry potter and the sorcerer's stone; and many modern novels, such as the hunger games. I couldn't agree more, fellow redditor. Now let's leave this god forsaken image board and return to reddit, where we belong.

I kept trying to disprove my suspicion by reading more and more...I said to myself "be reasonable, there must be something of worth out there" but there is not.

He didn't mean anything. Like most writers he just says something vague in nice prose which plebs eat up as deep.
>>

like age old adage from shakespeare, "some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them" neglect s to point out that many never achieve greatness, are never "sweet delight" and live an "endless night."

I never read novels because I get bored easily, and I read about this book in an Umberto Eco book, and turns out I really liked it! Anybody know similar books?
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Not similar, but have you considered other books by Calvino? Short stories?
>>
>>8507072
Haven't read a book quite like it, near the ending I felt it became a mix of Borges and Philip K. Dick. Anyway, it's basically a Borgesian idea that is actually worked out (Borges refuses to work them out in novel-form and instead writes about them in an abstract manner). You can try to read him, starting with Fictions. Or try some Philip K. Dick, but don't expect a similar, metafiction, experimental structure. Other (metafiction/experimental) titles: Pale Fire, At Swim-Two-Birds. If you enjoyed that you can try Petersburg by Bely, but don't start with that.

>>8507072
Read Perec's Life a User's Manual. I didn't love Calvino and Borges, but I love Perec, and he is very clearly influenced by them. Imagine a more melancholy and human but also inhuman version of Borges/Calvino. You'll love it

Just finished reading this.
I found it to be thrilling and enjoyable.
It's quite interesting to read about something that was essentially high tech and highly experimental back then.
Anybody else read "A journey round my skull"?
