Anybody here read this book?

> inb4 self help bullshit.

Yeah, I know, but Mark's prose is pretty good and this book gives a pretty new spin on improving your life.

Basically he says that most life advice is bad because it emphasizes what you lack, which causes you to feel inadequate. So for example, let's say a self help book tells you to not be scared when you're going into a job interview, and provides some meditation exercises to help you not be scared. In the short term, this may give you a feeling of confidence ("I'm armed with this awesome information on not being scared"), but then when you go into the interview and do get scared, you feel like a failure, which will reinforce your fear in future interviews.

What Manson recommends instead is to find what actually matters to you and pursuing that. You only have so many fucks to give and spending them on insecurities that other people or advertisements have placed in your head is a waste of time. So he says you need to learn to identify your actual values and filter out things you only care about because you're being manipulated by social pressure.

Essentially the title is a misnomer. The book isn't really about *NOT* giving a fuck, it's about finding out what you *SHOULD* give a fuck about. He emphasizes that pain is inevitable and suggests that finding out which types of pain you would welcome in your life will help you know what you really want, because if you see a form of pain as a blessing that's a good sign that it's implicitly tied to something you really want on a deep level. Essentially you need to know what kind of pain you want in your life. For example, if you have a crush on a girl, and thinking about talking to her heaviest and most painful issues gives you a weirdly motivated feeling, that's a sign that you really like her for the right reasons, because you actually want the inevitable hard parts of a relationship with her.

I dunno.

What do you think?

Just more self-help tripe or genuinely insightful?

I have to admit I'm finding some of his ideas intriguing

Pure drivel. Self-help is a pseudoscience, and if common sense doesn't tell you this, then nothing will.

This. Also change your writing style next time so you're not recognizable old boy but nonetheless, it's was a pleasure, Mark.

I feel like the series is much better looked at all 5 books at a time than with the first. That said, Life, The Universe, and Everything was probably the climax of it

It's been said that for the title of the best author in the western world, there are only two competitors: Shakespeare and Dante. So, /lit/, who would you say is the better?

I'd say Dante, simply because pic related on its own captured every great thing in Shakespeare's work collectively.

To say one has to practice what one preaches is covering with a thin veil the ideology that these two things are separate. That there is something that you think first and then apply in practice or that it is about something you think that you must preach.

Nietzsche did not preach, nor did he just simply practice some ideas, like one would by following some guide book on life (even if self-made). He lived close to his philosophy and with the conflicts inherent of it. Perhaps it may seem strange to you to see that his body of work was much bigger than himself.

(Not to mention that some people just think he is telling people to be selfish and try to be great then how come he doesn't hit the gym or something, which is just stupid, I'm assuming you don't think this)

>>
>>8892886
Nope

Its a pleb book that wasn't even written by a trained historian, just an extremely unprofessional journalist who literally disliked the Nazis because he thought they were gay

Historians hate it because its sloppy, and Redpilled morons hate it because it completely misinterprets their beloved Nazis

Read the Third Reich trilogy by Richard J. Evans instead

Why are there no books about how hopeless and stupid humanity is? I am sick of all this religious spiritual shit about how humanity is so beautiful and consciousness is so special. The smartest most special human of all time is still related to a bunch of shit-eaters, torturers, and animals. You can pretend all you want, but it's the truth.

What the fuck, Dave? All we have about Hal, Don, Joelle, and John "N.R." Wayne, traveling into the Concavity to dig up JOI's head is a passing reference in the beginning of the book and Don's hallucinatory, wraith-given premonition of it while in a hospital bed on pain meds (and only a short paragraph at that). And no details about how and why the AFR kills John Wayne? Or how Orin escapes? Fuck you.

same reason i have RYM and Letterboxd accounts despite not interacting with the community (especially in the case of Letterboxd; it's mostly insane SJW types, with a much smaller but not-insignificant reactionary element comprised of dimwits that surely frequent /pol/; why aren't there many relatively well-adjusted people to talk to on the internet?)

WTF were you even thinking posting this sub quality meme on one of my favorite anime forums? I'll have you know that by the time I was 11 I had already finished Naruto, Bleach, every Dragonball series, as well as countless other quality anime. I even had the best limited edition figurines that my parent's money could buy from REAL series such as Deathnote, and the TMNTurtles vintage 1987 edition of Raph. Don't even get me started on your "anime experience." Look I'm not trying to be overly rude or anything. I'll always encourage people trying to get into Anime, and I am usually quite the patient and understanding man, I honestly try to relate and befriend people such as yourself on most occasions for at least a month, or however long it takes for me to deem them worthy or unworthy of the sweet blessing that is anime, but this? This is unacceptable and downright OFFENSIVE to my culture and everything I stand for as a devout anime viewer and Manga reader (I'll return to this topic in a bit, don't worry.)
You think you know anime? You think you're a real fan? Never in my entire 16 years of living have I ever seen something more PATHETIC than THIS. Honestly with posts like this I can surmise that your character is nothing more that of my parents, or old friends who just couldn't accept me for who I am. I've known your type ever since the fourth grade when my heart was destroyed by the girl who was actually TOTALLY INTO ME, that was of course until I showed her my storage closet full of only the highest quality clippings of my ShōnenJump collection. You're just a shallow, shallow man, just like Haretchi-Chan of my own Independently produced Manga. Not that I expect you to have even the slightest clue what I'm talking about. This an advanced and highly evolved form of entertainment, and if you can not appreciate it as such then I have no interest in your "contributions" to this forum, "sir".
Now lets take a look at the animaiecal achievements of a true civilized Animation enjoying youth. I've recently completed my 429th anime, this probably doesn't seem like a significant number, however asking any intelligent viewer, such as myself would yield you the response that it is the total number of Naruto: Shippuden episodes, one of the greatest series to be released. Additionally, I own a limited edition beach towel of the 1st edition semi-holographic re-release of The Dark Magician Girl. I have also saved up enough of my allowance to purchase a full sized pillow displaying a custom image Shinobu Eishima-San (from bleach in case you weren't familiar.)
