My brother told me I should read some nonfiction, so I decided to start reading about Zen Buddhism. Apparently this is a highly recommended book to start with so I'm going with this first.
It makes me wonder, if intellectualism is to be avoided, why is it something this board is so obsessed with?
>>8889620
What does your brother read?
The board is obsessed with the false pursuit of intellectualism, and with posing as intellectuals or "pseuds" as we like to call it.
The board is only incidentally concerned with genuine pursuit of knowledge.
>>8889620
intellectualism does not presuppose pretension, but it does unfortunately lend itself to it easily.
Many here are concerned with the appearance of intelligence, battles of smarts, etc.
Holding your tongue certainly is a skill that today is not easily acquired living in the city.
I'm going to build a new shelf on two sides of the perimeter of the room a couple of feet from the ceiling soon. I've run out of room on my shelf and floor space in my house.
I named my daughter alice and my wife has taken to collecting different editions of the book.
Ayyy I'm building myself a bookshelf I just need to get to the store to buy screws since I'm out of the right size. I'll try and update with pics.

How come we never discuss poetry on here?
>>8889493
it gets violent. only the futurists think that's a pro argument :/
>>8889493
Appreciating poetry requires an advanced sensitivity to language and the patience to closely read it. /lit/'s to pleb to do those.
>>8889493
Because poetry is the most difficult form and requires a lot of rereading
Lit reads books for status symbols, thus never rereading
Who's the best Latin poet and why?
>>8889460
Lucretius.
Ovid and Virgil too I guess.
>>8889464
Ausonius is better poet than Virgil. Lucretius is great but I think Ovid edges him out. I could just be biased because Ovid's more than one book
Montaigne thought it was Lucretius, which is good enough for me.
Welcome to the first /ssrg/ thread! All are invited to join in at any time, or to come and go as they need. This is to be a very open group, focusing on short reading so no one ever feels they have missed the boat.

The first story will be The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. This is a very short one at just under 3,000 words.
It will be read and discussed over the next couple days with discussions finishing up on Wednesday. Thursday will begin the next story, Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville, with discussions finishing on Tuesday. It is a longer read at 14,465 words.
Many stories will be pulled from The World's Greatest Short Stories (Dover Thrift Editions) which is $5 on Amazon.
I have swapped the first two so that we may start out with a shorter title.

>>8889062
ah!, lets begin. will read it tonight.
I'm trying to learn how to poetry.
What do you think?
Poetry is degenerate desu. If you have to read any then at least read Alexander Pope.
>>8889135
You're the most stupid anon I've ever seen on /lit/
Anon, Poe's the Raven is the only poem even worth reading.
No but for reals pick up Pound's ABC of something and start with Epics.
Why is the average person such a pleb with literature, and in general?
>>8889000 (checked)
Because they aren't interested in it
The same reason why the average person isn't a mathematician or a musician or a painter etc
Only so many hours in a day

Being patrician would be meaningless if everybody were patrician.
They waste their lives in pursuit of happiness instead of embracing the screaming void of inevitable mediocrity.
Post shit related to literature that you want, but you can't afford.
(Pic super related)

i want to own all the books, but i can't
There's a copy of Lunch Poems out there signed by almost every New York school poet except Frank O'Hara (it was signed after his passing) and I fucking would love it but it's like, twelve grand or something.

is there any worthy self-help book? are all them a scam and just tell you once and again "trust yourself", "you can do anything" and that kind of bullshit? or do they give some helpful advice?
can't contribute with nothing because I didn't read any of this.
>>8887946
Read it. Also How to Win Friends and Influence People, but you can't just read it and put it down, you have to actually apply the principles until they become habit.
>>8888661
is this legit advice or just memeing
>>8888870
Just my opinion. Also I found listening to HTWFAIP on audiobook to be much more bearable than reading since the whole book is just him launching into somewhat dated business-type anecdotes but are still applicable to today
