Exactly why is hubris a bad thing?
On a narrative level, mostly because Gods are envious.
On a "message" level, because humans are not gods and moderation is always the right path to follow. The "know yourself" delphian thing is about knowing your own capacity.
On a metaethic level, because every human quality which, given a name, is viewed as positive implies it's excessive/deficient opposites and maybe because hubris kept some relationship to individual transgression of the law (crime or "sin").

Wow. That's surprisingly comprehensive. Thanks

Why do people think 'exposing' (more of name-calling) logical fallacies equals actual debating skills? Isn't it a cheap way in itself?
I mean, I see people just shitting out "STRAWMAN!!! GOT YOU AHAHA XD" when it would be much easier (and productive) to say "I didn't say that at all" or "Don't put words in my mouth", "what I said was that..." instead.
The point of logical fallacies is knowing them and thus breaking them, not just shouting them as if they were some sort of "press to win" button. What happens is that each side starts pointing out what they THINK is a fallacy and the actual arguments die.
I'm not advocating for fallacies, but to break them properly.
Not to mention people seem to confuse formal logic and casual discussion which have completely different 'rules'...

Is A Game of Thrones a good book for someone who has never read a book fully before?
I bought the collection because they were really cheap.
Other books I've been gifted over time but haven't read include:
1Q84, Misery and The Great Gatsby.

Start with The Great Gatsby. It's tiny.

Do you think it would be useful to read a small book before jumping into bigger books? When it comes to paying attention and comprehension
>>8890282
GoT is a great beginning I guess. Light entertainment written for plebs, who by nature have a short attention span. If you don't mind having to read tons of food describtion, GoT could be something to get you used to reading longer books.
Don't expect a masterpiece thou.

What's /lit/'s opinion on split infinitives?
>>8890217
pretty cool, especially in your pic
They are good if they sound "correct". The OP image is an example of a good split infinitive.
Use them with rarity and specificity, and you will be fine.
>>8890217
it's beautiful, but never used in everyday conversations, so using it is like stylizing literature as literature.
Is the last half of this book similar to what philosophy is? I haven't read any philosophy books so most of it went right over my head, and I tend to just ignore the /lit/ memes on stuff like that. But I could get down with trying to work out what beauty and art means to me, seems like it would make living a more fulfilling experience.
>>8890163
If you got to the second half, you are better versed in philosophy and literature than most people here.
Go advise people on books youve never read, somebody told me its popular here.

Eh yeah, kind of. Specifically Aesthetic Philosophy.
Although Stephen was purposefully written as a pseud retard so it'll be rather different.
