How do you feel about the Google Tilt Brush. Are you interested in the artistic implications?

i feel its less painting and more sculpting, fun nonetheless if only i had money

It's in early days yet, I'd like to see where the technology goes, If there was the possibility of doing digital sculpture the way we do digital painting I'd love it. I tried 3-D modelling and I hated it, I want holograms and shit.

interesting, but I'd like it if there were tools, and if it wasn't aimed at children directly

Okay, so I am becoming an illustrator, and I am wondering something about student quality and artist quality mediums.

Does it really matter what quality of paint or pencils is used for your art? I am very stingy with money and my materials vary from student and professional quality, so does it matter what quality of paint or pencil I use?

>>
>>2516766
Pencils it doesn't really matter much.

Student paint is cheaper because it has less pigment and more filler. So it is also more translucent and looks worse and you end up using more of it anyways.

Buy the professional line of paint, and if money is tight then use a limited palette (Zorn palette is one of the more famous ones, but if you research you can find many different limited palettes). I also would avoid the real pigments for things like Cadmium colours since they are very expensive. Buy the ones that have "(hue)" written after it since it is synthetic and much cheaper and until you are very experienced it won't make a difference.

What surface you paint on will also vary in price. If you want to go cheap, then buy a jug of gesso and a cheap big brush, then gesso your own panels or even cardboard. You can also go to Home Depot and get them to cut up giant boards of masonite for you into smaller panels.
>>
>>2516766
if you're poor, use student grade, no big deal

if you can afford it, use artist grade, it has more pigment so you won't need to make as many passes.
>>
>>2516799
cadmium is also poisonous, so it's not exactly easy to come by

Stephen Silver (for those who don't know, he was the character designer for many popular cartoons and also made a well known video about how you should not do art for free) 's website got hacked by a bunch of Muslim Hackers

don't know why they targeted him

hey /ic/, i'm looking to apply to some concept artist/UI artist positions in my area, and i was wondering how/if i can go about showing some work i've done for a previous company? and should i ask for my company's permission before letting some of the work i've done for them is shown to others?

i know some people password lock their pages with work they've done for other companies, but is this ethical?

some mingzhu yang for your troubles.

I don't see why not unless they specifically said to you in the contract to not share it anywhere.

IMO best way would be getting low-res sample of your work or detail or even sketch, credit that it was done for such and such company and all should be well.
>>
>>2517643
>I don't see why not unless they specifically said to you in the contract to not share it anywhere.
ah, well isn't an NDA's purpose is to serve just that?

good idea on the rest though.
>>
>>2517646
Did you not read what you signed? Anyways, as a general rule, you can post the artwork on your site or whatever after the product has been published. If it is internal early concept stuff some contracts though don't allow it to ever be shown publicly.

You can show it in private via email in pdf or whatever when talking with other companies, just mention it is NDA so not to be shared and don't discuss those other projects in detail, just show the artwork. This is a very common practice and without doing it people in certain areas of the field with insane NDAs (like some film concept work) literally would not be able to find work otherwise since everything for like the past 5 years would be unable to be shown.

should I learn to draw before I attempt painting?

Most painting errors are actually drawing errors. That said, it doesn't hurt to practice both simultaneously.

This

Do both at the same time. Some people wll tell you to master drawing before painting which is virtually impossible just make sure you're not a complete beginner at drawing, know your fundamentals and start painting. Painting is where the ride actually starts.

How can I draw something with a high-angle shot ?
Pic related, I would like to draw a character watching the "camera" with this kind of angle but more exagerated.

I can't find any model or tutorial for this, so I ask here

Draw a box around the character.

Angle is all fucked up in that picture. It just looks like she's leaning back.

Lot's of repetition in figure drawing and studying how perspective works.

Just lots and lots of study.

How do I go about finding shadows on a form that is cast by itself? For example on a body, shadow cast on the face by a brow, nose, ear, etc.
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Huh? You use your eyes, you can see it
>>
>>2516826
Light travels in a straight line so you can project from the light source and calculate cast shadows. It gets a bit complex to actually do it properly when you have organic forms casting onto other organic forms, so just use your brain and intuition to guess how the shadow projects off and it will look good enough. People can't really tell very well if cast shadows are a bit off (same with specular reflections).

If you really want it more accurate then you can always build a quick clay or 3d model and see for yourself how it looks.

Cast shadows = sharp edges
Form shadows = soft edges w/ core

is it better to have a dayjob when making art? if you do good work, people will eventually come to you. if not, at least you'll be financially independent from a lifetime fulfilling hobby.

it also gives one more room for originality and artistic freedom if people here care for that
39 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
I think most artists who do make money with it do have a primary job to support themselves. Not many artists can make enough money SECURELY each month, so it's better to have a backup. If you drown in jobs, then you probably don't have to. There's also art dayjobs in offices though.
>>
>>2515570
You think about it.

-Get a 9-5
-Come home by 6 (if you have to commute)
-Wash up/dinner (1 hour)
It's now 7pm, unless you have other errands (or kids) you now have 5 hours to draw until you have to go back to your slave owner again for another 4 days.

Part-time job sure why not. The problem with your post is
>lifetime fulfilling hobby
>hobby
We're in this to become the best. If you don't want to be the best and not make art your job then you are going to keep making excuses like 'people will eventually come to you'.
>>
>>2515570
sounds like you've already convinced yourself of the answer. personally, I think it's much more difficult for a part-time artists to succeed at art. Art, as well as real success at most anything, demands sacrifice.

why people keep asking for critique on his "1st time ever" stuff?

the only valid advice you can get at this point is to keep working: do it 10, 100 and 1000 times again, until you get good. you're not supposed to show like 99% of your work to nobody

Hi guys,

I am looking to buy some good books of painters (over amazon) with some strong compositional elements to apply to photography.

Any recommendation?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2517217
Is there a reason you want to get a book on artists over photographers?

And I suppose it depends a lot on the type of photography you do as well. I really like the composition of Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper and think both of their work would carry over fantastically to photography, but that is just my personal taste.

I would avoid any books specifically on composition though. It's mostly pretty bullshit. Composition is one of those gut-feeling things and it is dangerous to fall trap to conventions and formulas, plus a lot of the analysis on composition is made-up and not what the artist intended.
>>
>>2517220
I also buy / bought books from photographers, but i want to learn from the core. Maybe i have more margin to create things from there to here (photography)
I am interested in portrait, street and social documentary photography.
Hopper is very good, already have a book of him. Gonna look Wyeth stuff. I was also looking some baroque and renaissance stuff.
thx a lot
>>
>>2517220
And yeah, we have the same felling about that shitty composition books.
One PDF is enough for that.

Anyone know some inexpensive alternatives to copic markers? shits expensive

Prismacolor
>>
Prismacolor markers have pretty vibrant inks and can last a while.
Blick Studio markers are surprisingly decent. The ink quality isn't as nice but they're good if you want to dip your toes before spending hundreds of bucks on markers.
Both come in brush tips like copics.
