how did you learn about the existence of /ic/?

where you on the right path to becoming a better artist before coming here?

how long have you been here for?

>me:

found /ic/ (and by extension 4chan) through a sycra hate thread

i was doing shitty cartoons and trying to skip realism and the fundamentals because i thought it wasn't necessary

i've been here for 8 months, and owe a lot of my current skill level to the guidance and motivation that /ic/ gave me.

>how did you learn about the existence of /ic/?

Some people on facebook were talking about an artist, without mentioning his name, who was being pervy towards a girl at an event or something, and when she wasn't receptive apparently his response was "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!" So I think I was googling shit trying to see if they were talking about who I thought they were talking about, and I think that lead me here. So yeah, I was brought here by drama as well lol. I had heard about 4chan years ago but I thought it was just a place for pedos and other such degenerates.

Read a bunch of smack talk here about said artist, laughed a lot, then forgot about this place. Then I think it was mentioned by someone as a place to get feedback from totally random people, and I took a closer look around and starting checking back in somewhat often.

>were you on the right path to becoming a better artist before coming here?

I had pretty much given up on art without admitting it to myself.

>how long have you been here for?

Uhhhh first visited a year or two ago maybe? Started regularly visiting half a year ago maybe. I dunno.

>Forget about it
>Decide to come back years later (2012/13 I think?), mostly browsed /v/ since I played more vidya back then
>Just a year or so ago discover "oh shit, there's an art board", been drawing since 2010 trying to emulate Yoji Shinkawa (pic related) but I still was only okay at best
>Been trying to git gud since

Glad I discovered places like this - and before that, ConceptArt - which actually encourage shitting on poorly made artwork unlike the DeviantArt circlejerk.
Although be honest I've never actually put my head down and studied fundamentals like everyone here seems to, I kinda just noticed the "shapes" of things in nature and applied them to my drawings. I can draw a decently accurate human without a reference and with little to no glaring anatomy flaws.
Which I guess is kind of the same thing but whatever.

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Hey, /ic/,
I already asked /diy/ and got nothing. Maybe you guys can help? I am planning on making a sculpture out of paper mache using paper, obviously. Ill seal it, prime it and paint it after. I've done this sort of thing before, like for shitty school projects, but never this big. It will be a life size woman-deity. I need to know about your experiences, thoughts and, most importantly, what is the best way to make the STRONGEST paper mache recipe I can?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2517096
I haven't done paper mache on that scale so can't really help. If you are concerned of it being able to support itself though then it's probably a good idea to build an armature for it.
>>
>>2517096
I made a life-size human figure in high school. Unfortunately I don't have pictures, but in order for it to be stable, I created a PVC pipe skeleton first, then fleshed that out using chicken wire. It survived many a tumble, so I'd recommend that for strength of the overall figure. As far as the papier mache itself, perhaps using multiple layers of construction paper instead of newspaper would give you more support.

Any Irish fags here enrolled in any art schools? I'm looking at doing Animation drawing studies next year in BCFE because it looks like one of the only schools that doesn't suck. Anybody done this course before/
17 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
>>2516373
I am currently in the course actually, it's a really good course but woefully underfunded, a good chunk of the staff are from the old Bluth studios after it died. Animation Drawing Studies/CDS is piss easy to get into but pretty necessary if you don't have much experience in animation. You can get into CCH/Animation with a decent portfolio but the standards are higher, more importantly you WILL be playing catch up in CCH if you don't, most of the students will be from CDS and have been working within the college and as such have a year head start.

IADT is ok from what I heard but I don't know a huge amount about it desu
>>
I've heard NCAD is good as well, but it's expected that a load of first years will drop out because the teachers don't give a shit about them and only want the best to stay. If you can handle that though, they've got fantastic facilities.

I'm probably going to go to IT Carlow this year because I'm a poorfag though.
>>
>>2516388
Yeah I heard that ADS is mainly about beefin up your skillset. I've heard good things about the learning process there.
How do you find it? Is there a lot of practical work? Typical modules? Also have you noticed an improvement in your drawing skill?
Sorry for the quickfire questions, just really curious about it.
Haven't heard much about IADT either but from what I have heard it is also very underfunded. A lot of people have been complaining about lack of facilities and the like.

>>2516413
The concept of core year in schools like NCAD and LSAD is a joke desu. You're basically paying a shit ton of money for the staff to neglect your education.

hello /ic/ this is my first time on this board so please go easy on the bully.

I'm posting a few of my practices here for advice. So due to shitty change of major in uni, I didn't have enough time to spend on drawing. I was kinda of in a situation where I had to force myself to cut down time on hobby for the sake of maintaining my grade. Sadly between drawing and language study, I dropped drawing because I didn't see myself improving, or it would benefit me on the long run. Now that i realized how shitty my reason was to choose that major, I changed to a new major which gave me back a slightly sufficient amount of time for drawing. Today I accidentally looked back into my sketch books and I feel incredibly dumb for not dedicating enough time to my hobby in those wasted time.

you can skip the anecdote, but now I what I'm look for is how can improve on my shading technique and coloring? up to this point all I've been doing was mostly sketching. I have a rough knowledge on coloring, but blending colors and separating between shades and tints etc are zero.

I think I'm very good at using reference, but when it comes to drawing from imagination I just don't know any proper techniques that can allow me to bring that mental image into paper.

Just to REMIND you that, I have never taken any drawing class before in my life. My uni's art department is bat shit. All of these sketches are the result of what I have learned through reading books and youtube videos. Without a proper class, I don't think I can achieve any "wow" worthy art, but that's not my point anyway, since I just like drawing and I wish to nourish it.

>>
He appealed to a crowd of people who like to be asked why they like his work.
>>
>>2517174
Ya warhol had a lot to do with his success. I personally really like his art because its fun but also has a message. His style is almost impossible to imitate as many artist have tried and failed miserably as I'm sure you've seen. If you think he's shit you have to sort of look at the context of the time. Theres always going to be movements that are anti traditional art and anti establishment, the key is doing it correctly and many artist can't do that like he did.
