Honest question: why do you make your own paper? Wouldn't any bought paper be much better quality? Especially if your handmade paper is just made from scraps of bought paper.

I like the idea of recycling my leftovers - I'm a printmaker so I end up with a lot of scrap paper from test prints which would get otherwise wasted, I was hoping that by taking up papermaking as a hobby I'd be able to supplement my paper stocks.
I also wanted to see if I could get a nice debossed relief print from handmade papers.

I suggest you start by doing studies in grayscale using gouache to see if you can get the hang of it. Same with pastels if you can.

Work on getting the likeness and values down, then start worrying about colour.

I actually use the Transform Tool in Photoshop and SAI to create those artworks.
From top to bottom, the original graphic would be warped and transformed to have more complex and advanced pattern and structure, and those process may be implement with many times.
Finally, they will form the body parts and become the robot design.

Honestly for plein air just observe the colours and try to mix them accurately.

The big thing to know though is colour has three components. Value (how light or dark it is), Hue (red, orange, yellow etc), and Saturation (the intensity of it, is it greyish or colourful). There's also Temperature, which comes about from a combination of those, but it is a relative thing that changes based on colours around it.

Objects have a local colour (a green tree for example) that is then shifted based on the lighting. So a tree outside will have a warm green colour in sunlight and a cool green shadow (the shadow is influenced by the blue of the sky).

i understand those three components, but its a whole different animal outdoors, when i'm mixing on the go haha. as in i dont know how to get the values/saturation i want from the paints i have. my instructor just mixes in a tiny bit of this and that and gets the exact color he wants. i dont have that, but i guess your site will be the starting point.

i was super sad about my paintings and almost through them away. theyre just sitting in a plastic bag right now. i'll post once i get home.

I'm not sure if you paint digitally or not, but colour mixing in oils is a bit different.

A few things to keep in mind:
-not all colours are the same strength...a tiny tiny bit of blue will affect a large pool of yellow or white for example. So you need to just get experience of what proportions to mix things.
-most palettes use a warm and cool version of each of the primaries. Try to figure out what temperature each of your colours is.
-mixing complementary colours sort of cancels out...like mixing red and green, or a purple and yellow, gets a dark brownish colour.
-Mixing a brown and a blue is a common way of getting a black.
-whenever you mix two colours the combination will be darker than the brightest one you mixed
-since you are working in oils you can scrub off with a rag dipped in solvent or scrape with a palette knife to get rid of paint and erase a section
-painting plein air is super hard and much more difficult than painting indoors with controllable settings, so don't beat yourself up too much for not getting results you want
-Alla Prima by Richard Schmid is a great book that talks about oils, painting in general, colour, and a whole bunch of other stuff. He does primarily plein air and has step by steps. It's expensive but worth buying. Or if you are poor then you can check out the book thread and I think there is a link for it.

What happened?

It will probably take a few months to get decent with your non-dominant hand, and perhaps years to reach the exact same level as you had with your dominant hand.

Just be careful in how much you do right away as it is easier to get carpal tunnel or other repetitive stress injuries if you suddenly start using that hand a ton after barely using it for your whole life.

Did the carpal tunnel exercises suggested in the beginner thread (videos and so far), only to have it completely screw up my arm. Taking psychical therapy and under going surgery, but my arm won't be the same. Trying to learn with my left, sucks to hear that it sounds like I'll have to start all over.

I managed to grab an Epson R2000 printer for $450. They're originally $700, but they often have massive rebates ($250) to mail in.

I also wanted to take my digital work off the screen and into the world. A lot of times, it can give it new life. Also, sharing photos of art prints on social media is more effective/engaging than sharing a file straight from your computer. Pick related is a recent print. The colors are absolutely fantastic.

The R2000 prints up to 13x19, which is just fine for my needs. I get nice thick paper from Red River Paper, and - while expensive - nice sturdy paper is worth it. You can get a cheap sample pack from them to try out all sorts of different papers.

The ink is expensive, and the printer can go through it surprisingly quickly. A full restock of all inks is $47 on Amazon right now. Good paper (~50 count) can cost anywhere from $30-$100, depending on type and quantity.

It's hard to say how long the ink lasts, since I don't rigidly track it. I'd guess that it will last around ~100 prints. You'll likely use one color more than another, so you might just have to refill an individual cartridge instead of refilling everything.

The whole thing is going to be an investment. I once sold prints at an artist market and made $400 profit, so if you're going to sell prints you can make some of your money back. I do it mainly for myself and for social media though, as selling prints in person was a ton of work and a big risk.

Let's look at the reality of things here.

Go into the drawthread, beginner thread, alt art thread, las, porn thread, sketchbook thread and study threads.

It's clear that the average skill /ic/ isn't really that great.
However there are a small handful of people here that are pretty good but the nature of /ic/ makes it difficult to tell whether those people are actually giving critiques or not.

I do believe it is possible to give critique without the skills yourself just not a full critique. You can tell someone what's wrong with their art but you might not be able to tell them how to fix it but that's alright.

/ic/'s mindset towards art is very good for improvement. Anonymity allows for the most honest critique possible. Also /ic/ is in a world of good information. I would never have found all the amazing resources needed for improving like all the good books in the book threads and all the good art in the fav art threads

4chan's reputations makes it difficult to tell whether any good artists browse this board as they're never admit to it.

The fact that we're solely interested in improving our art is respectable, any good artist will see that. Although an obvious downside to this place is that everyone is very angry and bitter. There's no reason to be angry at other artists or modern art or any of that, just get on with your own lives.
