I've been trying to draw seriously for about 2 years, but I feel like I haven't progressed much at all. If not even Loomis - Fun With Pencil could save me, does that mean I just have no talent?
Yup!
Wallow in misery.
Drawing LITERALLY isn't meant for everyone. Some people find this out the hard way.
2 years is nothing. Everyone takes a different amount of time to git gud, the important thing is that you don't force it. Draw subjects you want to draw, study, read art books, but never forget to enjoy. Each drawing you're going to learn something new, even if it's by osmosis.
Don't stress, just draw, and draw a lot. Draw everywhere. Draw a lot from life. Just draw.
Also, I don't recommend coming to /ic/ while starting out. This place has gone pretty downhill lately, as you can see with the first few comments. Wish I could recommend a better art community that's active, but I haven't really been able to find one that is as good as old /ic/ was.
Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.
AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.
RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)
#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.
TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.
Old Thread: >>2689641
I see many posts here about art school or college but most known artists these days dont seem to be established with a fanbase until 30's or 40's or even later, why should it matter?
Is this a cultural thing/brainwashing thing where we 'have to have it all' in our 20's??
Is it true what i read that there is no real 'age' limit on becoming a professional artist?
Personally I am 32, never went to art school etc, do all my own study and am self taught, sure I am not yet published or selling anything and I sometimes get paranoid about 'age/numbers', or if i see someone younger getting into the game before me.
Opinion?
>Is this a cultural thing/brainwashing thing where we 'have to have it all' in our 20's??
It is. You're 32, you have about 50 years left to live, it leaves you a shitton of time to get better and have a fanbase
>>2691771
No one needs to know your age when you promote yourself online, as far as the random internet user goes you could be a 70 year old wrinkly man or a 20 year old uni student and they wouldn't be able to find out.
>>2691771
There isn't. It seriously is all ageism and a good bit of propaganda on the part of the population.
The general reason for that advice though is more the older you get (in general) the less time you have to study/be free and most your time will be taken up working. This isn't always true but for most people it is and they can waste potential they may of had not exploring it in their early years when they had a support system like their parents or family.
But if you feel secure and like you have the time and will then that shit doesn't apply to you.
Anybody feel like fulfilling a fairly simple draw request? Well, I say simple for you guys, not so much for me. I do realize that it is against the board rules to request 'free' art, so perhaps there is someway I can scratch your back in payment?
I want this for a t-shirt print that has significance for a friend of mine.
The concept is a bird (can be a simple bird of your choice but if the inspiration takes you, then an Eagle, but not a bald eagle, would be most preferable), flying away from a bird cage with its cage door swung open, and the bird has a 4 leaf clover in its mouth. The bird can have a neutral look on its face or a happy look, your choice.
If i'm asking too much and no one is keen then I guess the next step is finding someone who might do this for a commission. Keep in mind I have to buy a t-shirt and pay to get it printed and then pay for international postage to my friend so I want to keep costs low. If this isnt the right place for such a request, where do you recommend I take my request?
>>2691591
Mm...SOMETIMES artists will make the t-shirt for you so all you'd have to do is ship it to your friend but I'm not sure how common that is or if they'd either want rights to sell the design (and thus print more shirts, which would take away the significance of what you want) or might rip you off doing it.
You might be able to find someone on here willing to either do it for free if the mood strikes them (I"m contemplating it but I don't know if my skills are up for it yet) or might be able to list commission prices here.
So anons be nice for once and at least list your own pricing here since op knows they're kinda bending the rules right now in asking.
That said OP a lot of t-shirt printing sites can be pretty cheap or you could look into screen printing which isnt too pricy to do yourself so make sure you shop around and weigh the options if you do have to commission AND do the t-shirt printing.

thanks man.
Whats the difference between the t-shirt printing sites and Screen printing? I dont know much about it.

I've been doing traditional figure sculpting for about a year now and even though I'm not good enough yet, I've been thinking about where I could take this once I git gud. As far as I know, there's nobody doing this (successfully) on Patreon and I wonder if doing flavor of the month anime/video game characters can net me a following. The issue is that I don't see why would anyone give me money for it, and I can't really offer people anything besides pictures of the sculpts and making of/tutorial videos. It's not like 3d sculpting or illustrations where people can have their own copy of the work because traditional is not scale-able outside of actually selling copies of the sculpts.
I know there's this guy that seems to be doing pretty well but he's 3d https://www.patreon.com/leslyzerosix, and he also does some nsfw stuff, which is more work for traditional and I don't want to go out of my way to do it and have people calling me out for it.
Thoughts?
Pic isn't by me, just one of my aspirations
Why not just sell your sculptures?
>>2686112
I can do that, but I want to make some patreonbux before I sell them.
>>2686107
Weebs pay big money for figurines and /tg/ throws shitloads of money at miniatures relevant to their interests
>I'm not good enough yet
You're shit, you ain't getting shit.
Ok, let's try and settle this once and for all:
What do you need to do to remain anonymous with paypal?
From what I gather from browsing their (and other) forums, the client will always be sent your name without a business account, even if you delete your name from the invoice.
What I'd like is for people with paypal experience to confirm this one way or the other.
I don't need conjecture and assumptions, does anyone actually KNOW how it works?
If the above is true, what are the requirements for operating a business account?
I've seen people saying you do/don't need a legit registered business, that your account will get permanently limited or worse if the name on your bank account is not the same as your business name, etc. etc.
>>2695522
you cant
>>2695539
Ok, but there's still the question of a business account
>>2695522
Yes, if you get a business account they won't be able to see your name. You don't require anything to change it.
If you're too concerned, then get 2 PayPal accounts, one with a fake name and the other real. Make business with the first and then send yourself the money to the real account.

You should work on gesture and structure rather than just trying to copy the anatomy. You need a critical understanding of what it is you're drawing if you want to do figure invention.
If you want to render using a pencil, you need to learn it
I'm an artist that changes mediums alot, but one of things I'm very fond of doing is stencil work. I take alot of time and care to cut each layer and there's something I really like about the boldness, crispness and simplicity of a stencil on canvas piece. I know that most people see it as 'easy' but some of the muti-layered pieces (3-5 layers) take alot of planning, hours or days to cut and I do it all by hand. It's something that can be duplicated multiple times, but I make a point of never using a stencil the same way twice. I've cut tons of stencils and made dozens of canvas pieces, but I tend to pack them away when I'm done with them. Recently I've decided that I'd like to try to sell some of the work online, but have NO idea how to price my own work.
It would make me happy to know that I've made something that others like enough to put up on their walls to ad to the atmosphere of it's surroundings, but I don't want to oversell, preventing that from happening, or undersell and loose out on what I could be earning for my work.
Can anyone give some advice of how do decide on not only a fair price for myself as the creator, but to the customer as well?
>>2695299
Lurk sites like saatchiart until you find pictures similar to yours (or at least similar in quality and size), average out what they are asking. Once you settle on a price for a particular size do the math to get price per square inch and apply to other sizes. Adjust if you don't like the result. Be consistent but not dogmatically so. Once you sell a few you'll know where your price points are. You can only increase gradually as you get more popular so price carefully.

Thank you for the tip
What colour palette would work well for a zombie themed piece?
>>2694730
Normally mostly muted "dead" greyed colors would be used, but you could make it vibrant saturated colors if you wanted a pop-art punky look.
>>2694730
What tone are you trying to convey? Slow rotting decay of society, or panicked bloody zombie emergency? etc
The most obvious choices would be white, black and red: white and black are often associated with death, they look "lifeless" when compared to other colors. And red reminds of blood, danger.
On the other hand those colors are so often used, that your picture could end up looking unoriginal, uninteresting; black and red are a cliche.
I suggest choosing 2 out of these 3 colors (red, white, black) and picking up another one depending on the context of the illustration.
By the way: could you recommend me some books about color theory? Now that I think about it, I should study it more.
Sorry if this thread is unnecessary, but I feel that my biggest weakness is my poor ass anatomy. I am totally inept at drawing males and it's a huge embarrassing point.
Post reference pics, studies, videos, photos to study from, discuss the proper way to study anatomy, etc etc.
>>2692514
>>2692514
The best way to study anatomy is to get a couple books on it. Don't waste your time trying to piece together various images you find online and turn it into a complete education.
One should learn how to draw males first. After that females become pretty easy.
I'm struggling with composition. So far I managed to put out those 2 versions, critiques?
Where you placed the left girl in the top image and the frame looks better. But the second image is better on everything else

blog?
I don't really understand who stabbed the guy. I think it should be more clear. Right now I'm wondering why the panda bear and wizard are just standing there posing for a husband/wife photo shoot, and the guy on the left seems to be picking up something off the ground, in the corner of his eye noticing "Hey wtf that guy has a sword in his chest". It doesn't help either that he visibly has both his swords on him at the time.
My point is nothing is very clear
