I'm doing an academic poster on Erotic Grotesque artists, so who should I be including? It's very hard to find a lot of information on this kind of work, most libraries close by hold almost nothing so I hope this doesn't read as a "not ur personal army/not doing your homework for you," type of post. If you have any resources that would also be very much appreciated, i.e. Art books, websites, videos, etc.

I'm starting it off with Shunga artists like Fukujuso, but if there's earlier work that influenced the genre please let me know! Contemporary artists are great, as well, I'm just not finding much beyond hentai and unnamed pieces from Gurochan.

Like from any time period? A lot of ancient art had sexual aspects, like fertility things. There's old greek vases with paintings of men with giant erections. Some theories on ancient venus figurines from the paleolithic think that there was a fetishistic or sexual side to them.

Some art nouveau stuff was very open about this sort of thing, just look at Von Bayros or some of Aubrey Beardley's stuff (he ha a twisted mind).

For more contemporary things I figure it would be easier to find since a lot of sexual topics are less taboo now, or people like to use them for shock value (Odd Nerdrum, Jenny Saville) or feminist reasons. Porn artists are also a thing now, like Samura's Love of the Brute series. But if you look into history even some big name artists did porn-ish drawings and paintings at times, just they kept it in sketches to themselves mostly.

I'm especially interested in the Peredvizjniki and Repin in special, but any general introductions and theory about Realism would be appreciated.

Bonus points for good stuff about French and Belgian Realism.

Btw: does anyone know of an actual decent book that explains/compares the theories of romanticism, realism, impressionism and expressionism? Or at least gives me an introduction to the thinking behind them?

To be clear, i'm interested in art theory, not in painting myself.

What do you need art theory writings on Realism for? It's probably the artistic paradigm that requires the least theoretical background.

Literature is probably better than art theory books anyway. Like the subject of that painting, Tolstoy. Poetics is good too, as well as philosophy.

Because there's no reason to keep cluttering up the Beginner Threads with our shit.

Currently making an attempt to work my way through Keys to Drawing, but with little success- I'm not even through the first chapter yet and I'm already completely overwhelmed. I don't understand anything it's trying to get across, and every drawing I attempt is either lazy, rushed, and hideous or aborted literally within minutes of starting it.

Why is it that everyone on the entire internet thinks the 2B pencil is the only tool you will ever need for drawing/sketching?

The most common arguments seem to be "you need only skill to produce diffrent values" and "good artists never use wider tonal ranges than what can be easily acomplished with a single pencil"

What the fuck is wrong with having diffrent pencils for diffrent values?
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>2695817
there's nothing wrong with it imo. Faster and easier than using multiple pencils though.

Being able to vary your lines/weight to your purpose is an important skill anyway so don't neglect it though.
>>
>>2695817
Seconded, but most people will never go far with pencil, it is just a convenient tool to learn in until they switch to something else. Having 10 pencils just so that you have 9 more ways to stab yourself is not productive and a waste of money.

I do it for me I guess
>>
I do it for criticism from others, because if i told myself that my work is the best no matter what, i might go crazy, and it would look like shit regardless. It is beyond important to know on what exactly should you improve on.
>>
>>2692720
I keep most of my artwork and studies to myself. Half because I'm never satisfied with my work, trying to improve, and half because I really don't care for the attention from strangers online. I've had a few fanart pieces that I did upload get a lot of notes and I have some fans who bug me to upload more since they like my stuff. And then you have the annoying people who make requests or want to be your friend just because they like your art. That only gets worse as you get more popular and I don't feel like dealing with that bullshit.

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Anyone have experience inking with Kolinsky Sable brushes? I just got a Da Vinci Maestro 03 to try out. I'm used to working with a brushpen and dip pen but want to open up my inking a bit

I'm specifically looking for cleaning and brush upkeep advice if any d/ic/k has some

I'm not the most experienced brush inker, but I read through some threads on penciljack when I got started. I've always followed the advice in pic related when it comes to brushcare, and my brush is still as good as new after more than a year.
Most people seem to clean their brushes either with a mild shampoo (baby shampoo or something like that) or brush soap from the art store. Masters Brushcleaner seems especially popular, but that stuff is pretty expensice, so I haven't tried it myself yet.
>>
>>2695647
A little hyperbolic, but still good advice.
It depends on your purposes I guess, but when you don't need lightfastness or water-resistance you could switch to a dye-based ink that will be less harmful to your brushes, since those are mostly just water. Like some Ecoline or fountain pen ink.
>>
>>2695650
>but when you don't need lightfastness or water-resistance you could switch to a dye-based ink

Seconding this suggestion, this can work very well. I've used black ecoline to ink pieces I wanted to color with copics before and it turned out fine. The alcohol in the markers usually doesn't reactivate water-based inks.
That said, Ecoline can be surprisingly tough to clean out of a brush - because it's water-soluable it won't ruin anything and you can get it out even if it dries in the brush, but it can take a long time until the water runs clear when cleaning it, even with brush soap.
Also, water-based inks will usually be a bit on the grayish side and not as pitch-black as a highly pigmented waterproof ink.

>MODERN ART

So, I just saw a video where 3 plain white paintings sold for $93,000,000.00

I have no artistic skills (I cant draw, or paint, or sculpt etc) but I have some cool memes that might make some epic modern art.

So, how do I get into the modern art scene /ic/? Keep in mind I have no respect for modern art or the people that buy this shit so I think I can pull off a 3deep5u artmaster.

Then what the fuck were the 3 white paintings that just sold for 93 mill? seems alive and well.
>>
Modern art is a CIA conspiracy. It was meant to seperate the west from the east (russia mostly) during the cold war and it worked. The logic behind it was "we are übermenschen, look, even our art developed while your stagnated for the last few hundred years". I'm not kidding, look this shit up.

Does anybody if you use dip pens have this problem that my hand touches the ink when i draw and then it becomes all messy on the paper. I'm left handed so that might affect it, but is there anything i can do or is removing the ink possible or do i always just have to wait for it to dry so i can draw more, it's so annoying.

You could try using something like a stick to lean and elevate your arm above the art on at so you aren't smudging it. Or just use scrap paper.
>>
>>2693091
Faster drawing ink or more absorbent paper. You can also try a cotton glove with the fingers cut off.
