What are some things in drawing you regret doing, /ic/? Besides getting into drawing.
>>2693283
OP did you put your answer as the title? Lmfao.
For me, it was being reluctant to do studies because I didn't really understand HOW to study drawing and ended up not improving until recently. For me, I went to art school and it's jump started my drive. I also like the feedback I can get on anything I draw, and I have figured out what it means to draw from life (because I finally had a teacher that explained what we would actually learn through various studies, such as the purpose of blind contour (which I hadn't really understood until I went back to school).
I regret that i needed school to teach me what others grasp easily but i iwish i had gone sooner instead of settling for a community college out of high school (My family always thought I was naive and wouldn't let me move out of state or even four hours to NYC to go to an art school. Would've saved me a rape if they had but whatever)
I also regret letting my crazy ex get between me and my dreams. I think a lot of artists give up when they start thinking seriously about the future when they have a partner, and thus they end up settling for a job that guarantees livable pay instead of the uncertainty of art (since if you're the most skilled artists out there if you can't market yourself you might not make shit).

I regret not studying more in cc. I learned some stuff there, but didnt but in the mileage to make any huge improvement
can someone line over this to show me what i can fix
Experienced painter here.
I have many many paintings, but my problem is that I have no idea how to market and sell them?
It seems the only paintings that sell are ones in galleries, but the only ones in galleries are the ones that sell. So how do I get in the loop?
I tried to let people buy paintings on their own terms, but only got asking prices of like $25, which is ridiculous for something I've spent months on.
Here's my website if anyone wants to see more, if they want:

I think it would be somewhat difficult to sell your paintings. They feel like images from days of windows 98.
You should look up exhibition opportunities at artdeadline.com, artshow.com, and theartguide.con.
If you get into exhibitions often you can build a cv and hopefully you will be able to get the attention of a gallery director who would like to exhibit your work. I see that you have painted a long time and exhibited at the art students league of ny. Then I don't know what else you should be doing. Nice paintings!

>How do i sell my paintings at reasonable prices?
Price tag "$10,000" -negotiable
ITT: think of a bad artist, and list things that you think they do better than you.
For me it's landscape/background, not necessarily because they are great at it but because they put in more effort into it than me. and also produce more content

There's an important number of people believing that "talent" doesn't exist on /ic/.
They think it's all about work, trying hard to achieve their objectives, but they're wrong, there is always some guy you met in your life that draws better than you even if he began drawing 1 month ago.
Kr0n made this when he was fucking 12 years old, now he's 25. They'll say that when he was a kid his parents forced him to work very hard and that's why he's so skilled now. But you're wrong. He has talent. And he's not even the best artist out of there.
But can you overcome a person with talent? Yes, if this person doesn't work. If this talented guy works as hard as you do, you'll never be as good as this person. Never.
The best artists are always the ones who has talent AND discipline to work very hard. If you only have one of them you'll be a decent artist, but you'll never be the art god of your dreams.

it takes 2 years of drawing to get to that stage, anyone can do it, its just time consuming, and at 10 years old all you have is time, id be more impressed if a 40 year old could do that in 2 years.

what's that kind of art called?
it's vape something
What digital art program do you guys use? I'd prefer something free. Also, do you use draing pads?
sorry, as you can probably tell I'm new.
>>2693509
>What digital art program do you guys use?
Photoshop is the best, and since they've moved to CC where it's subscription based it's not that expensive. You can always torrent an older version if you are cheap too. Otherwise you can try using SAI but it's not as powerful a program.
>Also, do you use draing pads?
Yes, all artists use tablets. Wacom is the best brand.
>>2693518
thanks for the reply. Can photoshop be used purely for drawing? And where would I find wacom pads?
I really want a portable drawing tablet.
is the cintiq companion 2 worth it? or should I try to get a windows surface pro 4?
I'd really like to hear what you guys have to say about these things. your opinion.
I'm all up for the cintiq companion 2 BUT amazon reviews scare me, and I have no problem spending that kind of money but I don't want to have a 50-50 chance of it working.
the surface pro 4 seems nice but people say those have a battery problem and that it's not as good as the wacom.
should I just wait it out? if so, when is wacom going to come up with something new? should I have to wait like 2-3 more years or what? I don't think I'm up to waiting that much.
I don't know if the ipad will be worth it because I mainly use windows systems
you guys would help me greatly, so thank you in advance

The companion will be better for drawing, but the surface will be a better computer overall.
I'm sure you've already read all the issues that the companion can have. IIRC the surface pro 3 had some line accuracy issues if you drew lines very slowly. Don't know if that's also the case with the 4.
Something worth noting about the companion is that it uses a 5th gen intel mobile processor. We're currently on 7th gen. You will be buying a somewhat outdated computer. You'd have to research benchmark comparisons to get an idea of what that means in real world use. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a companion 3 in late '17 early '18.
You also need to really ask yourself if you want or need a portable tablet. The top model companion runs for $1800 on amazon. You could instead buy a $800 cintiqHD, and still have $1000 to build a desktop that will blow the companion 2 out of the water.
>>2691723
I have a cintiq companion 2 and it was the best move i've made.
I've had no trouble with it apart from something having to restore the settings and shortcuts - but that only takes a minute.
>>2691723
I've had a Surface 3 and drawing on it was pretty crap... Sold it after a few months. The accuracy and responsiveness just wasn't what I'd hoped (don't trust the YouTube reviews) I don't have a Companion, but it looks like it's an experience pretty similar to a regular 13" Cintiq (just portable), so I'm willing to bet it would be a better option if your main reason for getting this is to have a portable drawing device. But yeah, it's got a fatter price tag.
Is your obsession with drawing as unhealthy as mine?
>be in art school, go on if
>people rip me a new one for my first few posts on ic and k can't stand it, completely fuels my self improvement for the next few years
>bad social anxiety in art school, feel like it's impossible for me to talk to people unless I can show them I'm good
>I'm shit so I sit every day quietly in class not talking to a souls, just listening and drawing
>finally make a breakthrough, have a great crit ft my illustrations in art school, basically no hard dicks, nothing bad said
>people used to tear me new ones all the time on ic, now sometimes they say nice things (that says a lot for ic)
>now I'm able to talk to people, makes lots of art school friends, feel comfortable talking to literally almost anyone
This is great except
>now I can't fucking draw.
Can't tell if this is a symptom of outside stress or that I'm just that pathetic that I only cared about gaining people's respect

It's quite clear that your neuroplasticity has hardened, your ligameme has cramped up, and your spark has fizzled. You're done. You gave it a shot but it just wasn't meant to be. You were never going to make it.
>>2690141
lol not gonna make it

Post your work.
First painting Ive made in about a year. I took a long break but felt inspired to make something today.
What can I do better next time?
>>2689729
Not bad, but the shapes are all very sloppy. I think if you want that flat opaque painting look, then check out someone like Alberto Mielgo and see how he controls his shapes to be very clean and precise and convey the information well. If you want a rougher look, then maybe someone like Lucian Freud is better to look at.
he giving a handy to ghost, op?

Apparently Art Center is offering many of their classes to non students at night
https://www.artcenter.edu/acn/coursedescriptions.jsp
it seems like their classes are the same as their traditional counterparts, and taught by the same instructors but the classes seemed to by priced cheaper, at around $800 a class(so a semester of about 4 classses will about about 3000-4000)
What do you guys think?
Seems nice. Doesn't change much in my opinion. You still have to get good on your own.
Does anyone else cycle through mediums? I've found that I'll obsess over a type of pen or pencil then find something else and draw exclusively with that for a few weeks or months until I find the next great thing. I've only been drawing for a year so I wonder how long this lasts. What have you gone through?
So far as far back as I remember it's been microns, uniball air, noodler's ahab flex pen, pentel pocket brush, .9 mm mechanical pencil with 2b lead, noodler's charlie with saguaro wine ink, pentel energel, gelly rolls, kuretake no. 8, and now a 2mm lead holder with 4b lead.

In my primary school art teachers were mostly local artists. I remember us nagging to parents to buy best watercolors best inks best papers best everything...
At beginning of each class a teacher himself would do a demo piece of what we were suppose to do, by taking paper and other supplies from one pupil.. That lucky someone would get to keep the finished piece.
The interesting thing to me was that he always choose someone with shittiest quality medium available, create something great with it, and at the end would say that no excuses "muh paint and my paper is no good" will be accepted.
Once you can draw well and make something reasonably nice, you will stop caring about the tools so much.
If you are technical, however, if your education is some kind of engineering, then you will keep obsessing like that probably forever.
>>2692188
I full on swap from mediums to do something completely different.
I haven't done plastic arts in a long time, but I want to get back into drawing. I'ms sure I'd get laughed on the board but I've been doing mini painting and toy custom work for a long time. Got bored tried models.
Got bored with that, moved on to more craftsman style stuff recently like jewelry and leatherwork.

Why did you bother replying, you bumped the thread?
Now it makes now difference on my part.
You fucking retard.
What is the painting of a man (looking like a demon) bowing with 1 arm extended to the left ?
Its black and white.
I am fucking killing myself trying to find it, im pretty sure its currently held in Holland or somewhere in Europe.
>>2693146
Can you be more specific? Or do a quick sketch of it from memory?
>>2693152
Its literally just a man bowing, he has a devilish look and intimidating eyes. That's all i can remember
>>2693152
also im pretty sure its either 19th centuary or prior.
Hello /ic/, i need advice on what to
do with some paintings that a friend
of my father gave him. All I know is that the artist is called Tanaka, and is a japanese calligraphy teacher. There is at least 50 paintings and framed calligraphies. I don't have pictures for everyone of them though
