I wanna start doing some oil painting and am after some advice.

Is there anything I need to know about buying a canvas? I assume the store bought ones don't require any kind of additional preparation before painting on them? I've heard some canvases can cause dried paint to crack due to movement.

And what about after a painting is finished, are you supposed to coat it with varnish, or something else to protect the paint after it dries?

Gesso is something you prime your canvas with before painting. Some canvasses are already primed.

You don't have to use it, but the surface won't be smooth and the paint might not hold so well. But I don't have too much knowledge about this.

If this is your first time trying oil paints, then my first piece of advice is to just go out and buy a beginner set of oil paints, brushes, and canvas/canvas board. Anything else will send you down a long dark rabbit hole of technical aspects that wont matter until your style and comfort with oil paint is solid.

To answer your question, Gesso is used to create a barrier between the canvas and the paint, as well as a medium for the oil to bond to. Without gesso, the oil would slowly deteriorate the cloth behind it. Don't worry about this in the beginning though. Any canvas you buy at any craft store will likely have gesso on it. If you aren't sure if it does, one way to tell is to look at the grain of the canvas to see if there is any kind of surface already painted on. Traditionally gesso is white and easy to spot, but toned gesso is becoming more popular. Canvas itself is more of a brownish to tan color. I wouldn't worry about your paint cracking, unless you are in the habit of baking your canvas right after painting it. If you follow some basic rules for letting the paint dry properly then your paint wont begin to crack for decades. This is a whole other conversation, but the basic principle with drying techniques is fat over lean. Basically, if your paint has a lot of oil in it, then it will take longer to dry. If your paint has less oil, then it will dry quicker.

As far as finishing a painting goes, varnish is necessary, but in this case it is not very important if you are just practicing and getting used to the medium. If you are finishing pieces that you intend to be able to display for decades, however, then varnish will create a protective coating on the outer layer of your painting that will protect it from exposure damage and help protect the color somewhat as well.

Since you are just getting into oils, you really wont have to worry about half of the things I went over. The best thing you could do at this point is to find artists that you enjoy and try and emulate their style. How do they use color? How much detail is necessary? Try and find out what they did to learn to use oil. STUDY THE BRUSH STROKES. Seriously. Go to a museum and get so close to the art that security gets pissed. My recommendation, if you aren't sure why this matters, look at the difference between William Bouguereau's and John Singer Sargent's brush work. Both are fantastic figure painters, but they accomplish this in very different ways.

Still lifes are great beginner practice. The models don't move, and you can sit there for as you need. Painting from life is easier (for me at least) and will teach you quite a bit about light and shadow.

That should be all you need to think about for now. Spend a little while with the basics and build out your equipment from there. It is very easy to buy all kinds of oils/adjuncts/thinners/brushes/easels/etc. but until you have a direction you want your work to go in, you will just be wasting your money. Enjoy the process and paint what you love.

I used the 3ds camera to take pictures of the Bryn Athyn Cathedral and then worked from the 3d pictures.
the results are interesting, i feel like It was like working from life, but had the convenience of a photograph.

because taking out a sketchbook and drawing whats in front of you is such a hassle. thank god we have cameras to add a extra couple steps
>>
>>2777438

to take 3d photos on the 3ds

the two cameras on the front of the ds produce one stereo image as you capture it

its honestly been the best results from working from a reference ive ever had

Im considering getting a 3ds again so i can use the camera again

Go to a Design school, not an Art school.

Design schools test your hustle. Since the workload and learning curve is very steep. It tests your time management skills. You'll create actual meaningful relationships with instructors and fellow peers. It's a chance for you to explore and experiment while getting critiques by professionals.

If you're worried about jobs, learn anything Graphic Design, Product Design, 3D modeling, Photo retouching, UX Design. Those are actual jobs that are quite stable yet kind of boring.

The only thing I will say is to get ALL liberal arts done BEFORE entering a Design school. That way you can focus on art as much as possible. Just make sure the credits transfer.
>>
>Redpill me on art schools.

You're going $100,000+ into debt for a degree in a field where a degree doesn't matter and where all the knowledge you need can be obtained for free so you can compete with self-taught pros who are better than you will probably ever be. And the pay in this field is usually low to middling unless you're really good or really lucky, btw.

/oil/ general. discuss anything specific to oil painting.

To start but not limit the thread: After years of charcoal drawing and dabbling in watercolor, acrylic, ink, etc. I've decided to dive into oils. I'm pretty confident in drawing, so I'm mostly concerned with handling. For those of you who have experience with oil:

What books/videos would you recommend? I've already read The Complete Oil Painter by Gorst.

What brands do you use?
What mixtures/substances do you use most commonly for your medium?

I want to start immediately with (a modified) grisaille, but are pre-stretched canvases with acrylic grounds okay? I'd size/ground my own with oil but I don't wanna wait 3 months for it to dry.

There's a book by Harold Speed about oil painting that a lot of my colleagues talk about.

I don't own the book myself, so I can't really recommend it. There's a lot of archaic shakespeare talk in there too so ymmv.

I've tried the art forums, discord groups, etc. and was kind of disappointed by the vibe. I wonder if it's a little like the bystander effect, where having so many people posting dissuades people from really pushing one another. It's usually a few people really working and a bunch of people mostly just shooting the shit.

I want to find one art bud around my skill level who's down to communicate regularly (perhaps daily) and wants to compete with the goal of the two of us pushing one another to grow like a couple flowers or some shit. I'm in Seattle btw. Here's where's I'm at skill wise. It'd be chill if you're on a similar level.
This is like Grindr for artbuds, buttfuck it yo.

Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I'm going to take a trip soon. I'll be on the plane for 10+ hours each way. I want to get better at drawing the human form, and to have a better understanding of how to convey form better through my drawings.

How should I use my time on the plane to do this? Is there some sort of hyperbolic time chamber-like technique for me to use to do this?

I have an office printer that I can use to shoot off an art book if necessary.

I would consider myself beginner level.

Serious.

Just pick up one of Andrew Loomis' books (Fun with a pencil for beginner exercises or Figure Drawing for all its worth for drawing people, I don't recommend this book for absolute beginners tho) and do the exercises and copy the planes

so I have 40k in savings right now. I spend about $700 a month on food and rent. I am planning on NEETing to get better at art and produce some webcomics but yet at the same time wondering if I should go to school for a non-art major instead and get a job for more stability (40k dont last forever). What should I do, /ic/?

I am so overwhelmed

Go to school. If you aren't working, you'll still have time to get better at art if you're not a lazy fuck. And if you're 25 and unemployed, you get the full force of that delicious pell grant. Throw in some scholarships and your loans are less than a honda civic. Just make sure your healthcare won't get dropped for not making enough to get discounted healthcare and not being black so you can't get on medicaid.
>>
>>2776744
Dont listen to >>2776758 , you don't have to use all 40k, but at least try it for a year, you're in a pretty unique spot, take your chance.
>>
>>2776744
At that rate, your savings will last you 4 years. If you can actually grind for at least 8 hours everyday, and practice the right now (not just mindlessly doing shit that isn't advancing you any particular direction) then sure.

So I wanted to come up with my own comic style for becoming a comic book artist at least for my passion. I wanted to make a comic of PowerGirl. I know it's not finished but I have come to the end of my rope in terms of how I can improve to make this better.

Best way to find a "style" is learn how to draw a figure and recognize shapes within them a little better. Once you can eyeball something and break it down into simplified shapes you're on your way to gold. Keep a log of artist you already admire and play Frankenstein's monster, experiment alongside trying to improve your skill set.
