>>2487004
I have the feeling your monitor is too dark, many of the shadows look burned out and completely black when they are probably not supposed to be. Try looking at this on another monitor and see if it changes. Also, Its a bit smeary (like the other anon), so use some harder brushes. For example, that hair certainly wouldn't look all cloudy like that and neither would the fabric on the headband. They would have very hard edges as the forms overlap. The anatomy looks decent though.
>>2486462

Figure line drawing I did with comparative measurements
>>
>>2491518
From what I see, I'm noticing that you do very well with making it appear three dimensional and getting a lot of depth. You also have amazing control when it comes to keeping very strong and confident lines.
On the negative, however, I feel a bit uncertain of the right hand's pinky, and the right shoulder. Both look small to me, but I could be wrong. The left thumb also looks a little flat, and the palm seems a little long, however, you seem to have a very strong grasp of hand structure over all, so this is honestly almost nit picking. The left upper arm also seems a bit misshapen in terms of anatomy, as the muscle you drew doesn't bump? up enough near the elbow. (I could be wrong here, too, this is just a bit by my gut)
With both knees, I really admit to liking the depth and shape you have going, but his left knee appears to be a bit awkward in comparison to the thigh, as there doesn't seem to be enough of the thigh muscle drawn in.
Over all, though, I personally like your style.
>>
>>2491472
The idea you have is very interesting, and you're going strong with the anatomy, as well, however, I'm noticing that most of the piece is over all, very grey, which causes the looker's attention to simply awkwardly wander about rather than going to the point of interest. I'd recommend darkening the background further to increase the contrast you already have going.
The blood specular also looks really good leading back to the predator, but it seems a bit concentrated nearer, but that could just be me. The predator, too, may need a little more contrast in shading on the body and, if you weren't going to already, some speculars on the hands and feet would help emphasise the liquid.
You could also try some texture brushes if you want, but ayyyy that's not everyone's thing. If you want, I could link you to a set I like using. (It's for Photoshop, but I could see if I could possibly find a way to get some .pngs of the brushes, if that would work for making a brush in whatever program you use.)
>>
>>2491428
I like your colour usage a lot, and you seem very good with identifying what should go where, especially with the hair.
Although I feel like you have some good strokes going with the hair, it still feels a bit lacking in texture, and same goes for the lips.
I'm not sure if it's lacking in the original picture, however, most people have a philtrim above their lips, which is honestly pretty fun to accent quite brightly, and it's a nice place to add a lot of light to as well as a nice shadow from the nose.
I'm also noticing you lack the shadow below the lips, or it is at least very faint.
I really like the nose you did, however, particularly around the tip and nostrols.
Continuing to the eyes, there is a small 'pocket' on the edge of the lid, particularly near the tearduct, which catches a lot of light, too. These small details are generally what makes a painting go from good to great. Anyway, this is a bit hard to tell without the original, but I feel as if you should shade a bit more in the tear duct/corner of the eye region, or at least get a bit more contrast in the sclera area itself. It seems a bit flat. The iris also seems to be lacking a bit of shading, but that is not uncommon in photographs, so this doesn't have to be taken into account, either.
Anyway, the last bit of crit I got is that the shirt and hat also seem a bit lacking in contrast.
As for the positive, I still feel like your colour choices are quite fantastic, particularly in the hair, and I also like the background choices. The eyelids look nice as well, particularly the shading on the lower lid.

Very Metal Gear, but I like these designs, they're weird but they work. If I were to critique anything, make your background a bit more of a cooler grey color I think? have more of a bright spot in the sky where the sun is shining through and blah blah rendering blah blah
>>
>>2491716
If it is fucked, its BARELY fucked. The mountains help artificially raise the horizon line making it look fine. I actually get a really good sense of depth from this.

i think you should probably post in the beginners thread. also you really need to read loomis. read "figure drawing for all it's worth". your anatomy needs work. instead of doing more 30 minutes studies, try and do more shorter ones and focus on the rhythm of the figures.

Besides anatomy, your values seem really off, like I can't tell where the light source is supposed to be.

I am in a classroom situation with it- We started out with 30 second - 5 minute gesture studies. - And I did well on those. But for some reason it isn't translating to the 30 minute poses. The lighting may be attributed to the fact that there are multiple lighting sources, she had 4 lights on different sides of her in the studio.

I think I figured it out though. I realized on the gesture drawings I started out with getting the basic proportion and movement down, but with the 30 minute sketches I start with trying to go straight into the shapes/forms. I need to slow down and start with the basics.

The the comp and mood are really well done. The stark contrast around the face and the perspective strongly inferes his austere emotions and his authority.

However, as another person pointed out, the face lacks dimension. To fix that just make the planes of the face more noticable, asaro heads are great reference for this. Planes are also needed for the beard imo. also try to be more consistent with highlights. They are also great indicators of form.

This is probably late but I forgot to check back in that thread after it hit bump limit. What I meant was that the first redline looked like it was going for a more straight on view where your drawing looked like it was going for more of a worm's eye view. On the box gesture B I drew what it looked like they were aiming for. The blue arrows mark how it would've ended with a lot of straight horizontals and verticals and looked like a view without much perspective. On the box gesture for my redraw I tried to show how I tilted the lines to help indicate perspective. The head on the one they drew was better but I think you should keep trying for the angle on the body you were heading towards for a more dynamic figure. I hope that helps, if you're not already totally finished with the drawing by now.

yeah yeah it's not just that, the ones I linked don't look proportionally accurate for a human. the first one in particular has the eyes of a slow loris and it looks like her jaw is jutting out past her nose, same with the second one. the main thing that stands out is the noses are too small/flat.

looks as if you are just going for main features and slapping them in where they look "correct" without any pre-existing construction or fundamental drawing skills.

honestly, do loomis's drawing the head and hands, do the book, the whole thing and then go back to doing live draws.

because as it stands, your lines quality and proportions are all over the shop, just reverse the image you posted and you will see this clear as day.

This looks like something a creep would draw. Maybe you're having trouble placing the features correctly because she keeps squirming around so much even though you already tied her up. The next logical step would be to sedate her, that will probably help you get to the next level in terms of our art, Good luck ;^)

yeah... that's how i like to draw... i want to be able to draw like that so why would i practice any other way? if i read this "loomis" and he tells me anything other "learn to draw without construction" im going to put it down.

drawings look much better when the construction is happening during the drawing rather than before it. stop trying to hide mistakes, or better yet just learn not to make any ;)

at some point bait becomes so powerful it turns into the truth again. it's called honesty. learning to draw is just as easy as i say it is.

Using construction is a means to avoid mistakes, not hide them. The only thing you accomplish is reaffirm your mistakes as intentional ;^).

Intentionally looking like shit or giving excuses for why something looks like shit doesn't make your art any better. A wonky drawing is still wonky regardless of what handicaps you give yourself.

And how do you keep managing to make your hand look like it's forcefully molesting itself >>2492983 ?

why should you try to avoid mistakes? you'll learn faster if you work through them. made a mistake? do a new drawing. don't overwork one drawing to death do.

I'm not "intentionally looking like shit" or giving excuses I'm telling you none of my stuff is that precious. If you critique that one eye is misaligned I can't do anything about that since the model is gone and I don't work from photos after the fact. I'd rather just try to get it right on the next drawing. That's how you learn. Not by fiddling with your drawings until they are "correct". Get it right the first time or move on to a new drawing and try to get it right the first time again.

The method you're talking about would work if you actually observed anything you're drawing. But you don't. You don't measure proportions, you don't look at how shadows and lines fall to suggest texture, you don't pay attention to form at all. Someone could learn to draw purely by always drawing from observation, it's been proven by the old masters. What you do is glance at something and shit out a sketch and are proud of the fact that it only took you 15 minutes instead of caring whether or not you got anything right. Then when people say you got nothing right and what you need to do to get it right you just make up a bunch of nonsensical philosophical excuses, the most egregious of which is that your observational skills are so good you make things look more like what they are than they really look when all you do is make them look like a pile of rubbish.

stop pretending like I'm not going to draw for the rest of my life. it might be an effort for you, and that's why you try to get every drawing just a little just one more eentsy tiny little line and then i'll be famous and i can stop drawing riiiiight here but i don't give a fuck. I'll gladly take my time and actually practice right cause i've got a lifetime of this ahead of me and i'd like to actually make stuff i feel good about rather than force myself onto people early with some meme style that'll make me popular for a month.

Like you just said the method I'm talking about works and the sooner you guys understand that the sooner you can start improving too.

you over value the things you feel are important , in this case, the nose and the eyes are too big. your jaw doesnt change to fit the perspective and nor does the shoulders or neck ( bottom one), your lack of anatomy makes it look gory and grotesque due to your lack of symmetry as well. you didntdraw the skulls underneat the hair and the hair starts immediately as a hard shape.

The way you shade makes the look dirty, Vry harsh contrast and undefined.

Your ear is nice.

Don't be mean to brian he's a nice guy.

Study: Eye size, shape
effect of perspective on the jaw ( cuts higher, the neck and the shoulders ( go higher) when looking from above.
Eyebrow anatomy ( thin no construction, dont reflect properly)

Okey , let's say you have a style , i mean , an actual style , you have all the fundamentals , you know how drawing in general works .
If you copy another artist while you have already have a style , would that be a bad thing? Let's say you really like the way the artist draws hair and for a while you copy it and you combine it with your way of drawing hair style .
I heard alot of mangakas who have what is called ''influences''.

Recently purchased a tablet, trying to do all sorts of stuff. Drawing faces so far is probably the worst I could do. Got stuck on this one. Actually have no fucking clue what's wrong, it's either the shape of the eyes, the position, the size or the whole face is messed up, almost ready to give up by now. Would be very grateful to anyone pointing out the things that are drastically wrong.
>>
>>2493745
Nothing is entirely original. It's not cheating if you want to tweak your style a bit.

Your entire post goes off of the assumption that once you learn 'how to draw' and 'get a style' you've hit a cap. Art is a continuous learning process, and you should treat it as such.

Just use the crop tool and separate it into multiple layers again, but it might be a good practice to keep drawing on one layer. Also you have kind of an tangent going on with the guys' top of the head and the entrance of the cave. I would suggest you move it around a bit so that they overlap more.

Maybe push the atmospheric perspective a bit more?
Put something down there, like a town with fields and pastures, or a river. Just something that gives us a sense of scale and direction.

The darker version looks better and conveys the atmosphere better. Also the mouths look fine, you can definitely tell they have glowing insides (possibly fire?) and the sides of the cheeks are illuminated because of it.

bait

but on the off-chance that it's not, enough with the fucking chinese cartoons

having a grasp in reality (even if a small one) will provide the structural knowledge to incorporate an "anime style" to whatever you draw and have it not look like it's drawn by a 12 year old on deviantart

the thread welcomes you. >>2492154

>>2494708
Yeah wasn't trying to bait. Just new fag. I've never taken a class before, I kinda just watch what other people do or look at objects and try to draw it the way I see them. Figure with enough practice I'll eventually get better. But I also just started like a month ago

Maybe it's still correctable, maybe I can miraculously get over all the mistakes I'm making over and over again, as well as this new issue, but the thing is, and hell I don't even know if this was the right place to show up at, is that I don't really aim to enhance my drawing it to the point where it looks almost like a real thing, but to find something in the middle. And that's what bothers me: even if I'm not aiming for an incredibly high standard, is symbol drawing such an incredibly big bother? Will it die off if I draw at least 80% close to reality?
>>
>>2495131
>if I'm not aiming for an incredibly high standard, is symbol drawing such an incredibly big bother?

YOU know your drawing doesn't look right and you want it to look better.

Learning the fundamentals is essential if you want to be better than you are now.

If you want to be a little bit better, learn a little bit.

A lot better? Learn a lot.

>Will it die off if I draw at least 80% close to reality

It will die off when you learn enough to kill it.
>>
>>2492860

It's rough. And basic. Edges are too sharp, models too basic, homes too even, walls too flawless.

WHat you're essentially doing is CGI postproduction. You won't be able to do much after the 3D image was rendered. It requires more lighting and polish. I guess you could illuminate the surfaces next to the lamps more.

I recommend looking up substance suit for texture creation. For more advice please visit /3/.

And Its Wretched Sister.jpg

What I want to convey is that there's a dead knight in the water. and his sword has been stabbed into him and he's dead af. You can see the reflection in the water of a mysterious woman standing over him. Though i'll admit I didn't convey that aspect very well here.

The story that I'd like to convey, though I also like to keep things ambiguous, is that there is a witch in the woods and maybe this knight thought himself particularly skilled and attempted to slay her. He failed to do so.

I'd like to maybe have some more witch-y references, like maybe his sword has some weird runes carved into it or he's got some mystical trinkets tied to his armor, stuff to imply that he knew he was going up agains a supernatural enemy.

blah

It's fine. Just from technique I'd work on facial hair. It looks scribbly. Treat facial hair like normal hair. You want to use your eraser and you want to darken some spots but not others. The usual. Try drawing an afro, or short curly hair to get an idea.
>>
>>2495890
i think i had a tougher time with the hair on the top of his head. had a hard time filling it out with still leaving enough reflective waves in his hair
>>
>>2495904
That's just it. You have a tougher time because you can't scribble it. When we draw hair our natural instinct in to draw ALL of them. But you just can't. The trick is to make the ILLUSION of hair. Draw just where is darkest first, and then draw lines coming off of it in the flow of the hair, leaving out the highlights. Then take an eraser and get all the middle bits and blend the highlights into the midtones.
