So, I'm shit at art, but slightly less shit at writing, and I'd like to make a webcomic. Not for the purpose of getting popular or anything, but because It's been so long since I've created something I was proud of.

Since it'll likely not get views (But I need to put it up on the web because it's highly likely a paper copy will get destroyed within the next year) I was wondering if it'd be good practice to just start now while I know nothing? It'd essentially be both work and practice.

Not gonna harm anyone if you do, but it may harm your self-pride if you want to put crappily done comics online.

Also why is the paper copy gonna get destroyed? On the run from the SS or something?
>>
Just go for it. Webcomics don't need to be well drawn to be funny, and if you wait until you're 'good enough' that's a sure way it will never get done.
And yes you will improve along the way.
>>
I've never seen a well drawn webcomic desu. i think the art is the least important part.

Well, the wrist looks a little thin, and the lighting is really ambiguous, but the fingers really look like fingers, which is a son of a bitch for most beginning artists. She has a good damn structure going on, and she should be able to build off of what she got and go somewhere-
If she keeps drawing, that is.

show her head and hands by loomis
>>
"Drawing of hands must be largely self-taught. All any instructor can do is point out the facts that lie right in your own hands."
Andrew Loomis, page 120 http://www.alexhays.com/loomis/Andrew%20Loomis%20-%20Drawing%20the%20Head%20and%20Hands.pdf
Hands are a bitch. No way around it. I'd say these hands are good for a beginning artist, though, as there is a grasp of weight to them and I can see the underlying muscle structure.

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

How do I stop falling in love with my work?

I'm improving as fast as I can but I tend to stick to one well-drawn thing and polish it (which is always a turd) rather than aiming for quantity.

I just tell myself everything I do once I can do again, but probably better.

On the flip side I'm incapable of spending large amounts of time on a single piece so I rarely get passed basic shading, and even that's only done a few times a week.
>>
Do a bit of both.

Don't become like some people (me included) and compulsively sketch without ever finishing something.

Why not, when you have an idea, do several different sketches first (set a time limit if you have to) and then polish your favourite?

Why do people keep obsessing about the female body?

Because curves are fun but I agree OP. I too am getting sick of drawing nothing but girls.

Because those people are mostly straight guys and people generally miring'. I love the sight of a little girl or boy more, but I understand that's not the case with most people.
>>
I favor drawing the male form as well. Love drawing its strong, well-defined angles. Then again I'm a straight female so that could have something to do with it.

Can we just take a moment and appreciate the existence of Mark Crilley. He helped me a lot to get where I am now in art, and I can't be the only one.

Most western guys who try to draw anime can't pull it off, like their art has a weird western feel to it. But Mark really thought me how to do it right.

Check out his channel where he gives free tutorials on how to draw manga and anime!

How do I know if it's a private owning it and keeping it for himself or if some museum or collection is presenting it ?

I'm an older cartoonist who learned to draw with pencil, paper, and a used copy of "How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way" (which admittedly resulted in some bad habits) and I'm looking to try and upgrade to the digital stuff most artists do these days. Thing is, it's like trying to teach myself how to walk with my arms instead of my legs, y'know? It feels like I'm trying to use a part of my brain that's never been involved with the process before,, like I'm drawing with my off-hand, and it keeps frustrating me.

Is there any hope for me (I know, "Nope"), and does anyone have any tips or recommendations they can give? I have a Bamboo tablet and a cracked copy of Paint Shop Pro (normally used for scanning my sketchbook) that I'm dying to learn how to actually USE.

Since you can already draw, it's more of a transitional learning curve. You get how to do things, you're just having to adjust the medium.

It's like learning spanish but already knowing French.

Just keep at it; once you get a hang of the adjusted motions, you'll do fine.

Alternatively, get a tablet with a screen to minimize transitional loss.

I've been looking into that, actually. Do you have any recommendations, especially in terms of price?
