How would the world have turned out if Rome never fell?
77 posts and 13 images submitted.
>>
well since the falling of rome occurred slowly over hundreds of years, including fracturing into the eastern empire which got sacked around 1453, it's kinda hard to reverse all that history and have any clear view of what might have been. so like, you mean if the visigoths never sacked rome or if the pax romana just continued post-augustus and none of the shiddy emperors ruined everything?

i suppose if they never faltered they would keep developing technology and eventually have romanized the world i guess.
>>
That's an incredibly stupid question for a bunch of reasons. The fall of the Western Roman Empire (assuming that's what you're talking about) wasn't some cataclysmic event, it was a very slow, very gradual decline. You'd have to examine thousands of factors across two and a half hundred years and determine which of them, exactly, would have to be removed from the equation to allow the Western Empire to continue existing.

Were the "Dark Ages" a meme? People like to talk up how fucking stupid europeans were at that time compared to the rest of the world... is it true? just a slick talking point?

look up inventions from the dark ages and you'll realize that not everyone was a babbling retarded
it's considered "dark" because of the rising influence of the church over the state and the lack of a unified european state like there was with rome

Basically western civilization collapsed and Europe was ruled by barbarism and superstition for a thousand years. Many intellectual pursuits like 'science' and art and philosophy literally regressed thanks to a certain jewish death cult.

Towards the end of this period shit started getting better, and since not everything was lost in the meantime, recently some historical revisionists have argued that the dark ages are a meme. They're wrong and they use deceptive methods to argue this by either redefining the 'dark ages' as either just a short period of time before the renaissance, or talking about how that small length of time actually wasn't so bad and then implying that means the entire period of time since the fall of western civilization was just as good. If you consider the entire period to claim that Europe didn't go backwards and remain essentially a backwater shithole for a long ass period of time is factually incorrect.

TL;DR

Sola Fide, by faith alone.
Sola Scriptura, by Scripture alone.
Solus Christus, through Christ alone.
Sola Gratia, by grace alone.
Soli Deo Gloria, glory to God alone.
>>
>>1436096
All Five Sola's are equally important for every Christian.

You need to have faith.

You need to read Scripture, at least the New Testament, mainly the Gospel.

You need Christ. Christ will show you.

You need grace from God.

You need to glorify the Lord, God.

How did ancient Greece and Rome came to be the forebearers of North Europeans, but not Middle Eastern? North Africa and the Middle East produced popes and Emperors. Alexandria in Egypt had a large Greek population since ancient times. And there are still a large population of Greek Orthodox in Syria. But somehow a modern day German can feel like the ancient Greeks are his ancestors. And not a Syrians? Is this a sort of colonial mentality thing, or is there some logic in it that I have missed?

>>
There's a certain innate Western inferiority complex that has led Westerners since the Renaissance to identify themselves with ancient Greco-Romans, because they thought that was the only kind of true civilisation there ever was, and believed Western accomplishments to be inferior.

The truth is Western civilisation is separate from Greco-Roman even if it has taken some inspiration from it, just as Near Eastern civilisation has.

Before Civil Rights the south was solidly Democrat. After that and until Reagan they were anybody's game. When Reagan brought in the Social Conservatives to the party the south went to being solidly Republican, but also meant the Republicans needed to pander & solicit the southern vote.

>What did Islam take from Rome, but the lands which were stolen from Semites, and what did the Germans take from Rome, but the land which was once stolen from the Gauls.

>Rome was an atrocity two thousand years long, stifling creativity such that the Magians had to to in a few years what others did in millennia.
>This alone is sufficient to explain the intense vehemence with which the Arabian Culture, when released at length from artistic as from other fetters, flung itself upon all the lands that had inwardly belonged to it for centuries past. It is the sign of a soul that feels itself in a hurry, that notes in fear the first symptoms of old age before the shadow of youth. This emancipation of Magian mankind is without a parallel. Syria is conquered, or rather delivered, in 634. Damascus falls in 637, Ctesiphon in 637. In 641 Egypt and India are reached, in 647 Carthage, in 676 Samarkand, in 710 Spain. And in 732. the Arabs stood before Paris. Into these few years was compressed the whole sum of saved-up passions, postponed hopes, reserved deeds, that in the slow maturing of other cultures suffices to fill up entire centuries. TheCrusaders before Jerusalem , the Hohenstaufen in Sicily, the Hansa in the Baltic, the Teutonic Knights in the Slavonic East, the Spaniards in America, the Portuguese in the East Indies, the Empire of Charles V on which the sun never set, the beginnings of England's colonial power under Cromwell - the equivalent of all this was shot out in one discharge that carried the Arabs to Spain and France, India and Turkestan

The Phoenicians were a completely different identity from the Egyptians and so on and so forth. The reason why those living in N Africa and the middle east share any sort of common identity is Islam.

Pardon me if this is a stupid twofold question, but I never really learned much about the Napoleonic wars other than what I got in high school, which wasn't much.

So, in 1805, the British win at Trafalgar, rather decisively. This puts an end to any plans of Napoleon to invade and occupy Britain, his major adversary who keeps forming coalitions against him.

Napoleon turns his attention further east, absorbs or establishes dominance over a lot of Europe, and eventually attacks Russia, in large part because of how they were skirting his continental embargo with Britain.

Why the hell was that necessary? I mean, by 1812, Napoleon and his allies/protectorates control pretty much all of Europe. I don't have the figures, but I'd be stunned if they didn't have massively more shipbuilding capacity than the British did. Instead of attacking a quasi-ally to force them in line with your economic policy which might or might not actually work to defeat Britain, why not be patient, build up your navy for a couple of years if necessary, get something overwhelmingly powerful, and then just stomp your way to England directly?

I mean, everything I've read/heard about Napoleon indicated he was a sharp guy, so I'm sure he thought of it, and there probably is a good reason why he didn't go that route, but I don't know what it is. Anyone here does?

Britain not only had more ships, theyre navy men were worth 100 french navy men. France could not compete without so they attacked russian in some last ditch attempt to starve a global empire.
>>
>>1439408

You can't build a navy just like that and Napoleon could have beaten Russia, the whole unbeatable Russia is a meme, just because both Napoleon and Hitler conquered Europe spendidly and fucked up the Russian invasion.

It doesn't mean that much. In WW1 the Eastern front collapsed and the Western didn't. The Mongols crushed the Russian principalities, Poland and Hungary but were beaten in Bulgaria and never stood a chance against the HRE.

Napoleon made serious mistakes during his invasion, but that doesn't mean he couldn't have pulled it off at all and install a friendlier regime that would have been targeting British India just like Paul intended to before his death and drive Britain even more into the corner by joining the embargo.

He was an ambitious man he never intended to put a limit on how powerful he can become.

Yeah, that's it Paco, Catholicism is a religion of peace!

What exactly was medieval loyalty to the subjects?

To which extent did they believe in the king's supernatural right to rule, and to which did they listen to him because of more factual power? Have dukes/barons/counts etc. also been believed to have more right than just military/land/economic strength? Were all peasants as brainwashed by religion and their current ruler propaganda as we think?

I think your average peasant knew very little about the world more than 10 miles from their home. Tell them there is a king and he's wonderful and god approves, and they'll accept that's just the way things are. "It is known."
