I don't think wildness is a measure of how socially complex a creature is. There's a lot of very social animals but they're still wild animals.

You have to buy into the theory of psycho-history. Society was built by the evolution of child-rearing over countless generations and different practices in child-rearing are how you account for differences in societies. It might sound like insane bullshit but look up a guy named 'Lloyd deMause.' He makes a pretty compelling case for it if you're willing to do some reading.
