Atheists have got it all wrong. There is no point in searching for the material proof in religion. For the believer the reasoning is pretty simple: Either you believe, or you don't. That's it. Or as Augustine said, crede ut intelligas (believe, so you can understand). To one who sincerely and truly believes, no further proof is necessary.
Modern man comes from a background in which he is taught that everything can be explained in a same materialistic fashion. This is alright as long as you stick to materialistic things. But once you move onto the immaterial, spiritual field then your search automatically turns pointless because you only choose to comprehend it in your own, physical way.

It would all have gone to shit as soon as Hitler died or showed any signs of wavering. We are also supposing that the jew problem would be "resolved" and there would be no more enemies to fight, at least in Europe.
How can you keep going a system based on a strong leader, a deep-roted hatred for jews and dangerous nemesis if there's no more of those three around?
But giving credit where credit's due, I don't think it would all implode in a day. After Hitler's death, things would slowly decay. The new leader, whomever he could be, wouldn't be as carismatic and powerful as Adolf. People would remember with fondness the better times when Hitler was around. They would whisper about how things where better then,
Fast foward 70 years in the future and Germany would, no doubt about it, have become some sort of democracy again. Or, at least, something different from national socialism.
That's the sad thing about fascism. It's a great ideology up until the point of an eventual victory against the "great enemy". Then, it all goes to shit. Without something to unite the people against, fascism is just glorified socialism.

I think the problem with history is we remember the times of bloodshed and the atrocities but we don't remember the good times.
This leaves a lot of us with a bitter taste in our mouths towards our perspectives on humanity.
No one really remembers the 60s when peace and love became a dominant theme in society. No one acknowledges that tens of thousands of early Christians came together under a new teaching giving hope and faith and peace to billions of people throughout history. People aren't taught in depth about ghandi who changed an entire nation through his pacifism and love of religions. If you ask most historians their opinions on humanity it is that we are a malevolent evil race of creatures who cause pain and suffering regardless of what we do.
No! Man has the ability to act better, man is not just a mindless animal, we can get along. Give peace a chance!
