hey/his/ i just stumbled onto some home videos of a Belgian family that visited or lived in the Belgian Congo (around 1955). I was very intrigued by the simplicity and how daily life looked like back then.

People actually think it was the Typhoons that stopped the Mongol Invasion of Japan and not the careful and decisive planning of the Japanese Shogunate of the time.
Why are people so stupid?
Because the Mongols assfucked the samurai in most engagements
>>1431404
And? Hannibal assfucked the Romans in most engagements. An open pitched battle is not all there is to warfare.
Are you an idiot?
>>1431384
I'd imagine the logistics of invading a mountainous island several hundred miles off shore were part of it. The storms probably didn't help
Was Rurik really Finnish? It's also worth noting when Ahmad Ibn Fadlan described the Rus he mentioned tattoos.
Norse never had any tattoos the sagas never mention them but they do mention things like hair color or scars so it's not like they omit details. Can we blame Finns for Russia?
>>1430867
Bump pls guys I'm really curious who Rus really were.
Enclaves of the ancient Finnish empire after its fall
The people living around Kiev had trouble with other tribes and asked for help from some warlords coming from the stockholm peninsula around Birka, these then became kings and founded Kiev after BTFOing the hostile tribes, the russian royal family was descended from these as well
Why was Dong Zhuo such a douche?
Well when your name is Dong...
He was chinese.

You just started playing Dynasty Warriors, didn't you?
You made that Lu Bu thread before too.
I'm playing Combat Mission and I want to get better at it. What are some good sources on warfare tactics?
Osprey has a series of books on WW2 tactic:

Read up on Alexander's campaigns against the Greek states and Persia. That should give you easy to swallow basics on the dynamics of fast and slow units working in concert with one another while also being entertaining because Alexander the Great.

Literally hammer and anvil ad nauseam, except maybe the last big one, in India.
What role did Jews play in Rome's decline?
>>1427469
They came up with Christianity which divided the empire and they would constantly chimp out in Egypt and Judea. Rome also caused the greatest butt hurt in all of history by naming the province Palestine.
Everything. Jews did Rome and everything else. Jews are the reason I dropped a shit and it touched my right nut this morning. Jews are the reason I'm so tired and the reason bugs get in the swimming pool. Fuck them.
>>1427630
Did someone mention Jews?
Why did Teddy Roosevelt send a bunch of obsolete battleships around the world only to see them embarrass the country by being barely seaworthy and breaking down?
>>1427331
because it was aesthetic as fuck and also

They "broke down" because congress refused to give him the proper funding for the fleet's repair and fuel.
Once they did break down, it basically made congress do what Teddy wanted them to all along: pay up. Despite breaking down it also sent a message that Teddy wanted the world to know.
That message was that the United States of America had a presence in the Pacific. Meiji Japan, Russia, the British Empire, and many others all saw as Teddy Roosevelt moved the fleet well outside of what the world perceived to be the United States.
The white paint gave the symbol of peace though, and it only got a rise out of foreign politicians. Civilians all came out in number to witness it.
I like the move overall... just a dick move because if Obama did that today he'd be impeached
>>1427331
He was extending the US's power and trying to show the rest of the world they were ready to liberate at a moment's notice
BEHOLD! The Ju 188, the planned replacement for the Ju 88.

Didn't a Luftwaffe general manage to get into Berlin with one of those?
1. was china the richest/strongest civilization for most of world history?
2. was that fated? will china continue to be the strongest civilization?
>>1434187
ancient china was a mess, vintage china was a mess, future china is going to be a mess
with the exception of imperial japan for about 20 years, no people in the history of earth give less a fuck about their neighbors, countrymen, humanity, or the planet than the chinese
>>1434187
China has always been the central power in the East, and long time ago was equal to or more sophisticated than western society, but fell behind in technology and science a long time ago. China being better than the west is a mostly a meme if you're past Roman times.
China will always be the strongest power in the East because of geography.
Between about 600 and 1200 AD, probably, though the Islamic world was about on par. Other than that, no, but they were always the best in East Asia until the 19th century.
What a fuckload of shit.
best thread today
Name me one more effective fucking weapon you asshole.

Guns. Especially when they have bullets.
>wake up
>find out your country has overthrown democracy for an authoritarian dictatorship consisting of religious extremists overnight
what would /his/ do in such a scenario, realistically speaking?
Join la resistance. I always wanted a short and exciting life.
I'll probably regret that choice when they're pulling out my teeth in a basement, but not for long.
>>1438774
That depends, what religion?
>>1438774
>authoritarian dictatorship consisting of religious extremists overnight
Gülenist type then?
What is this meme about "non-biased sources"?
Seems like a good way to tell whether someone has actually studied history or not
Well, having actually studied history, when looking at a work you need to more broadly consider the writer's motivations. It's not always as clear cut as "he was on x side which is why he wrote y", but there's an element of that in it.
>>1438316
>anything I don't like is a meme
>>1438340
I don't think you understand what you're talking about
>literally every ideology and school of thought is wrong
except pragmatism
Science is not.
>every ideology and school of thought is wrong
pure ideology
Any of you scholars know anything up the Chinese blood pooling incident? From my shitty recollection;
>approx 15-20 years ago govt sends in troops/ doctors to rural locations
>inhabitants forced to 'donate' blood which is vatted
>pooled blood then reinfused
>many deaths
Was told this while travelling through China a decade ago. Is this a tourist meme or is there any truth to it?
*anything about
Shitty autocorrect
>>1437733
what do you mean reinfused? like, the mixed vat was used to supply hospitals and stuff with generic "chinaman blood very terrific!" and not sorted by type or screened for disease?
All blood from the same village/town was pooled together, then reinfused to same village. Don't know if it was meant to have been mixed with anything else.
