Why were the Arabs unable to keep a stronghold in Spain? Why did Al-Andalus cease to exist after holding it for around 700 years?

>find a guy who studied history
>try to discuss with him the great movements and changes that went through the ages, and the applications they have for the modern day
>he knows nothing about it
>all he did was memorize dates, people, and events. He has almost no understanding of what they meant or why they were actually important.

What is up with that? Why are studies of history so focused on tiny insignificant details instead of the greater meaning behind it all? How exactly is learning all the individual battles in WW2 going to teach you why that war happened and the reasons the winners were the winners?

It all seems to stupid to me.

You are a very dumb person
>>

usually those who study history go into archiving or teaching, so its no surprise that they can get by with just memorization.
>>

THIS

I've been saying this for all time. I personally don't like to focus on the dates, but time and again I see people, their teachers, and my own teachers have been caught up with when X thing happened.

It's SO stupid. Most of my teachers understand how these aspects are less important (depending on the context, obviously, something like the leadup to WWI is pretty important with the days and dates).

Whenever I talk to my parents or friends about history, I always try to explain the bigger picture instead of "Oh yes, the Anglo-Zulu War first started in 1879..."

Is lasting peace between two different civilizations which share a border common at all in history? When two neighboring cultures don't share a common language, religion, or ethnicity, or diplomatic institutions, it seems like war is always likely.

Pax Romana is the only thing I can think of

That's one civilization enforcing internal peace though. It still had plenty of violent conflicts on its borders.

Hello, my good fellows. It appears that very few gentlemen are celebrating the 150th year anniversary of Admiral Tegethoff's victory in the Battle of Lissa, one of the first naval battles between ironclad forces, and one of the few smashing naval victories for the Austrian Imperial Navy.
This is a shame. I suggest we all visit our local gentlemen's club and join in the time honored tradition of calling out his name to fill the hearts of the frauline with Imperial zeal, causing them to heat up and remove articles of clothing for their comfort and our pleasure.

Let's discuss height over time.

How accurate is this claim?
https://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/medimen.htm
>Men from 12th century nearly as tall as modern men

Also, why have average heights stagnated in the West and fallen in America?

>>

Is it because of brown immigrants?

Were people almost as tall as us in the middle ages? How about before that?

Is this the best introduction into Buddhism?

>>

It helped me a lot in drowning out a lot of lay/folk Buddhism I got as a kid muddling up an otherwise pretty sensible soteriology.
I think it's your best bet, as it presents Buddhist philosophy in a logical progression rather than immediately jumping into a jumble of sanskrit words as many other books would.
Text is a tad tiny though, but whatever.
>>
Approaching Buddhism as a philosophy to be learned is lel. Get some experience with practice, meditation, mindfulness, with direct insight into Buddhist principles in your daily life, and save the philosophical overviews for when they actually mean something
>>
>>1438861
Go to your local Buddhist temple and learn there

How does one "be themselves?" Serious question, and one I have been pondering this morning. I feel like instead of being my own person no matter what that is like I am simply an amalgamation of people that came before me or are now living that I admire. I feel like I am simply an emulation or an attempt at one of others, and have pieced together their different personalities into mine or something like that. Like I am some metaphorical Frankenstein's monster.

Does that make sense?
23 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Dude jsut turn your brain off
>>
>>1438727

Dude that's easy. No two amalgamations are alike. Everyone has internalized the people and world around them in different ways and drawn different conscious and unconscious conclusions from it. Even if your character is an amalgamation, it's a unique amalgamation. That's "yourself". Be true to that, mmkay?
>>
>>1438735

But that isn't me? It's just different people.

In the Babylonian epic of gilgamesh it speaks of a Thunderbird perched in the branches of a tree and the-snake-who-knows-no-charm who nests at the roots. Is this comparable to the eagle which sits in the branches of yggdrasil and the serpent Níðhöggr who gnaws at the roots of the world tree?
